This gymnastics school is not at all suited to small children. We have had a poor experience with Coach Chloe where my 2 year old was not given enough support and was then kicked out of the class for crying. No warning, no discussion, and no follow up conversation after to see how they could help. What's more, my husband called to further investigate what the issue was and we were told she was 'misbehaving', but they couldn't tell us how. If a 2 year olds big feelings when they are struggling is seen as misbehaving then this is not the place for little kids. Hopefully this experience hasn't scared my daughter off of gymnastics for good. Additionally, this was all done in front of all the other parents, making me feel ashamed and humiliated. A staff member marched out of the office and ranted that she 'needed to be taken away' in front of everyone and with zero compassion. I left in tears. This is not a supportive or safe environment for any parent or young child. read more

We love Excalibur Gymnastics! Everyone is so welcoming. More specifically, our coach Trisha is the best! Whether there are less kids due to absents or more due to other kids moving up she keeps the kids engaged and is always full of happiness and energy. Every morning drive to gymnastics my little guy always shares how excited he is to see "coach "Tisha." She really knows how to make sure each child is enjoying the class by child led activities. We personally love flipping on the beams and swinging on the rope. You can definitely tell how much our coach enjoys what she's doing which makes it much more exciting for my little one to enjoy flipping and jumping around outside of gym class, too. read more

My daughter has been attending classes here for a month now. We've been to other gymnastics gym and this one is by far the cleanest in Virginia Beach. It is a top notch facility with very experienced coaches. I'm shocked they don't have a ton of reviews on Yelp. My daughter was quickly promoted to the competition track of training where she is about to receive a lot more training and within a smaller group for more personal attention. The kids here seem to learn and move up quickly. This gym has had a lot girls leave with college scholarships. I'm looking forward to my daughter's progression here. My feelings about Excalibur were very positive at first. This was where I trained as a kid and loved it, so this is who I trusted with my kid. My son is 5 and was very scared and nervous about starting. We usually have an amazing coach who eased him into it and worked with him as well as the other kids making sure everyone had fun and was involved. The gym was closed on a day of his class and our make up day was scheduled for today. We had coach Chloe, I immediately noticed gestures and faces she made at my son but let it go. As class progressed she had the children constantly sitting (not stretching) just sitting in a line. You would assume this would be the order they would be called in for the activities however, it wasn't. This coach knew certain children and called them first, giving them multiple turns while my son sat constantly. When he did get to go (last - no matter of his placement in the "line") she stopped paying attention and focused on the same few students. She then continued to make frustrated faces at him as if she wasn't failing to give him the demonstration/ assistance she was giving the other children. I saw my son point at me several times to which she shook her head no, I later found out she was denying him going to get a sip of water... the other students were allowed to go in and out as they pleased. At the end of the course I was ready to pull him out and I stood up, when she saw me stand up she immediately walked to my son (who was on the beam struggling to keep balance) and helped him as if she realized she was caught. She then lined everyone up (my son in the back of course) and let everyone pick which sticker they wanted and gave them a high-five and said good job. When it was my sons turn she handed him a random sticker and he politely said "actually I wanted this one" to which she responded "then you need to ask and say please" something that was not expected from any other child. She then stood up, no high five, no good job. I grabbed my sons hand and started to put his shoes on when I heard her speaking with another parent saying "I chose your daughter to demonstrate everything, I'm sure she was wanting to sit down" (seemed like an intentional statement being that she had my son sitting continuously) she then complained about summer hours and said "I'm sorry there were make up students in the class, it's not fair to her or me" .. meanwhile the parent who she was giving all of this praise to was trying to complain about the fact that all of our children were tumbling over each other on the balance beams and how she wasn't comfortable with the spacing. It seemed coach Chloe was too busy trying to insult a "make up student" that she bypassed that. I am infuriated to say the least not only did she mistreat my child, she then admitted to mistreating my child right infront of my face. It was not our fault that we needed a make up class, the gym was closed and the way we were treated because of that is disgusting. No one with this mentality should be working with small children, she should be ashamed of herself. I wish so bad I knew the name of his normal coach as she is amazing and I would recommend her a thousand times. However if you are told your child's coach is Chloe I would ask for a new one. read more

This review is based only on our experience selecting and signing up for classes at Excalibur Gymnastics. We paid for three months of classes up front and are planning to start our 10-year-old daughter in September for the Wednesday evening classes. So far, we really like their large array of class schedules and the fact that if she misses a class, she can make it up at a different time within the same month (though you have to call ahead and schedule the make-up to be sure there's room. When I called on the phone to ask questions, they were very friendly and informative, if a little brief. They're not a big chain gym with an abundance of employees, so I'm sure they have their hands full regularly. We showed up in person to sign up, and we waited a few minutes for someone to come to the front desk, but once she was there, she checked to make sure there was space in the class we wanted, reviewed the paperwork with us (payment agreements, etc), and we filled it out and signed. For a good, well-rounded program, I suggest one of the other local gyms such as Gymstrada. At Excalibur there are many gymnasts and coaches training from other countries who are not part of the recreational or competitive programs, and it is very crowded! Also, the gym is often closed for special events that do not involve the recreational or team program and which require additional expense for participation. Basic tuition costs at this gym are higher than any of the other gyms in the Hampton Roads areas, and competition costs are an additional expense. The parents association which fundraises to offset costs is weak and fragmented, and the owners of the gym actually collect and manage gymnast escrow accounts with a mandatory fee added for doing so. read more

We have been coming here for 6 months. This review is based on the experience I have had with my 6 year old, so if you have older kids, it may not apply. It will probably mainly apply for the younger age groups. We have been doing a 1 hour lesson once a week. Just wanted to do something where my daughter could learn some skills and get some exercise. Not planning on making her into a gymnast. So, all that said, my frustration with this experience is that of the 60 minute lesson, realistically, around 20-30 minutes is spent sitting/ watching other gymnasts while waiting for their turn to do bars, beam, floor exercises, or whatever. They could be stretching or practicing splits or something while they wait, but unfortunately the coach doesn't have them do anything but sit. I really wanted to make this work, but unfortunately after tying a couple others in the area, I think there are a couple others that are better suited for the younger age groups, so they're not spending the majority of the time sitting. The kids love it! Coaches are excellent and class sizes are appropriate. I think the students are well take care of. The office staff have been very pleasant in every interaction I have had with them. My son, who hasn't taken a liking to any other sports, looks forward to coming every single week. They also have a way for parents to see their child's progress online, which is a really great tool and encourages the kids to keep working hard. If you are a parent there is one downside. The waiting area is small- a lot of times all the seats are taken or hoarded by people's stuff. Some people do try to be polite and leave room but it can be a little awkward squeezing in. Some people end up standing, but even the standing room can be packed during peak times when classes are changing out. Luckily that only lasts for about ten minutes at a time. Overall I think this place is great and would recommend it, but I would accompany that recommendation with a heads up about what to expect with the waiting area. I wish I could give them no stars! I moved to Va Beach and signed my two girls up, every time they had a class they had a different teenage girl as there teacher. They literally bounced on the trampoline and did nothing gymnastics related. When I went to withdrawal my children and get a refund, they refused to issue me a refund. They had changed there refund policy after I paid for three months for each of my girls. I left numerous messages for the owner and he never called back. I called again and was told by the lady that the owner didn't have time to talk to me about a refund.. Don't waste your money on this place, it's honestly not worth it!!! read more

My daughter LOVED her time at Excalibur. She never wanted to miss a class. Her coaches were great, I feel like she really learned and improved a lot in a short time. All the coaches seem to have a good handle on their classes, they keep the kids on task (even the preschoolers!). The front desk staff was always helpful and the facility always pretty clean. The lobby can get a little crowded at times but it clears out after a little while. read more

The front desk attendants are rude and if you have young children, it will be a waste of money. They take water breaks every 10 mins, which in turn, you see them go to the restroom 3x during the class. Along with not a lot of instruction. My daughter went here for a few months and the gym is very big and you can definitely see that some of the children in there are very talented ;however, there is no place to sit for parents. The parents viewing room is extremely small and there is nothing for smaller siblings to do while waiting. The bathrooms were always disgusting as well.
