Around 8:30 PM, the General Manager, Yanni, approached me on the gym floor while I was working out instead of asking to speak with me privately. In front of other members, he told me that my body was making people uncomfortable and claimed he had received several complaints about the way I dress. I repeatedly asked what I was wearing that violated the dress code since I was wearing standard gym attire--a workout shirt and athletic shorts. He could not identify a specific clothing violation. Instead, he repeatedly compared my body to "more shapely women" who supposedly "cover themselves more" and threatened multiple times to cancel my membership simply because I was asking questions and trying to understand the alleged complaints. When I asked to review the dress code, the posted policy simply stated that proper gym attire and closed-toe shoes are required. There was nothing stating that my clothing violated any policy. What upset me most was not being approached, but how I was approached. This conversation should have taken place privately, not on the gym floor where other members could overhear it. I left feeling embarrassed, body shamed, singled out, and humiliated. I wear athletic clothing designed for the gym, just like countless other women. I cannot change my natural body shape, nor should anyone be made to feel uncomfortable simply because they have a curvier figure. Clothing naturally shifts during exercise, especially on different body types, and that should not be mistaken for inappropriate behavior. After this incident, several members and trainers approached me and expressed that they felt the situation was handled unfairly. Some even shared their own negative experiences with management. Every member deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and consistency. I hope management seriously reviews how situations like this are handled in the future because no one should leave the gym feeling publicly humiliated for simply existing in their own body.

I got the application from their site. How does she not know? Anyway, she called someone to help her & that lady simply took my tax return and told me that my monthly fee would be $50. Ummm, what?? She didn't look at the application at all. So, I asked about the discounts for swim lessons and etc. and another woman was called to the front to answer that question. She didn't know either & told me to call the Hampton location with my question. ?????? Ummm, I usually join the Y of Southampton Roads across the water & they never said/did things like the Peninsula did. I knew right then that I would be cancelling the membership ASAP. I did Zumba the same day & the instructor wasn't that friendly. There was 1 other person in the class with us (a total of 3 of us in the room), and they already knew each other. She didn't teach the steps. She just danced & I basically had to catch on. I love Zumba and all, but that experience was the worse. I just cancelled my membership today & will joining across the water. They just know how to handle business better and are friendlier. If I want to dance on the Peninsula, I will use my Nationwide membership. :) The Hampton location has more of the dance classes I'm looking for anyway. I still liked the cleanliness of this Y. They give locker keys & the locker room is huge. Masks are required and social distancing is suggested.

The staff is also usually super friendly especially in the mornings! It does tend to get quite busy as everyone gets off of work so as long as you avoid that time you should get a chill workout in. They have a few classes that they offer here like CrossFit. I will say the bathrooms aren't always the cleanest so I don't know if I would recommend showering here. They have bathrooms when you walk in and then they have locker rooms by the basketball court and more as you walk into the gym. They also have separate locker rooms for senior officers. They have certain hours where everyone is allowed in but after that they do 24 hour passes. Just go and talk to the staff about it and bring your CAC and they will give you a 24 hour swipe card to get into the gym after hours! EDIT: At the moment the 24 hour gym door is broken which is really unfortunate so they aren't doing that anymore, you have to go during hours and Saturdays+Sundays are closed now too. One downside is that they don't have a pool.

There's plenty of free weights, machines and cardio equipment to keep even the most hardened gym rat busy The locker rooms are a bit cramped, so I wasn't much impressed with that aspect, but I guess the trade off of having a gym close to my office is worth the lack of locker room space. (2 bathroom stalls, and a couple shower stalls) there are DV locker rooms available for O-6 and up. So there's that. You also have the option of racquetball and basketball if that's your poison. (I can play a mean game of HORSE if anyone is interested...) This place is a bit of a maze so it may take a few trips to figure it all out. No pool here anymore so if you want to swim you'll have to go to the main gym. Also, no snack bar so the main gym is where it's at for delicious smoothies after a workout. The place does get busy especially the free weights section but everyone is pretty mindful to not hog a certain space too long. Everything is well maintained and clean. They are really strict with ID checks so make sure to have yours handy. The building even offers a smoothie shop so you can get a tasty drink after a workout. The only reason it doesn't get a five star for me is that their pool hours are a little odd. Multiple times my husband and I have come during the supposed pool hours and it's been closed so I recommend calling before heading there to make sure it's open! Other than that it's a solid gym to get your sweating on.

I almost fell in someone's lap just trying to walk through the area. It gets EXTREMELY crowded like unbearable. I don't think I've ever seen this gym not crowded. People are everywhere, then there's no equipment to use/not enough room. They do have a pool which is pretty neat. They also have a little snack bar where they sell smoothies/drinks. Some of the people here are also extremely rude.
