We couldn't have asked for a smoother system. I think the thing that struck me most about this gym is that there was no "dude" energy or bad gym bro attitude where people tell you how to do things or stare or do any uncomfortable things to make you feel unwelcome. This is a beautiful thing and often absent in gym environments. As someone who's worked out with free weights for over 3 decades, I appreciate being left alone and not feeling uncomfortable. I imagine it would also be refreshing for the younger ladies as I remember getting hassled in my youth by guys like that. More gyms need to foster this environment and understand that girls lift also. Who knows, they may be working on something different or have information that you don't have. I wish there was a gym like this in my area, I would join in a heartbeat. Thanks for the pleasant, stress free workout environment!

They are a small gym with 24 hour access. Matt was very easy to work with to gain access to the gym even though I arrived to Birmingham late on a weekend. They have expanded their equipment inventory since my last visit and remain well equipped for aerobic training (treadmills, stair climbers, bikes, Ergs, Ski-erg, etc.) as well as functional training balls, bands, sleds, etc.) while maintaining the character of a weightlifting gym with an ample supply of machines and free weights, benches and racks, as well as some slightly more esoteric offerings (Kabuki bar, ladder bar, belt squat machine). I have nothing negative to say about the gym at all. My personal preference is to have no music in a gym during off hours so that I can more easily hear what I want through headphones, but I suspect I am in the minority on that point.

My recommendation comes in the form of a Facebook post the morning of the last day of my…read moreparticipation in the 6-week fitness challenge. I checked in to the gym and shared some photos of the previous day. (Photos are of my day not the gym, by the way). "There in spirit. Because my "travel workout" consisted of squatting and pressing this solid piece 10 different times (along with picking up and putting down many other heavy things) over the course of 8 hours yesterday. Every workout I missed this week, made up for and more. Grateful for the proper form learned in class over the last 6 weeks...not to mention the strength gained...that allowed me to be the impromptu 3rd hand to the moving crew I hired. We defied the laws of physics (and Tetris) at least twice. This, after waking at 5:30 to go move, stack, palletize, and wrap 1,900 bricks before the lift driver arrived at 8:00. Got in bed around 4:00 am. Just ask Eric when I emailed him *thinking* I might join the 7:30 PUSH class. Nope. Seems fitting that I would be sore in EVERY place going into my last day. Maybe I'll get some cardio at lunch... #6weeksITF PS - I couldn't photograph myself the times we weren't able to use a dolly so just for context I included two with the helpers to show the activities. Squats, presses, I think there was a farmers carry or three, we definitely did some Russian twists with this, the equivalent to a row, and probably some other movements I haven't learned the names of. (Also, this is a good approximation of how buff I am [feel] since ITF, since I had to duplicate the fellow pictured for the non-dolly lifts. )" I do have this to add: Even though this point I don't know whether I've met my goal or not, I'm giving 5 stars based on the way I feel finishing out. There are pros and cons to every gym. And each has a personality. This one suits mine better than any I've found so far. Best and most knowledgeable coaches (perhaps even within ITF, but I'm biased after spending time with these guys), and a convenient location. Everyone here is very entrepreneurial and each of the coaches is responsible for actually running the gym, which may be an added reason why there seems to be a shared sense of responsibility here. Looking back, I might choose to sign up normally rather than through a 6-week challenge, since I wanted to get fit and health anyway. But at the same time, the regimen and camaraderie of a group probably helped keep me on point, especially with everything that life threw at me during the course: back trouble, loss of a client, gain of two new clients, startup of a side business, and relocation...just to name a few. If you're on the fence about whether this is for you, the 6-week challenge may be for you. If you know what you want and can commit, though, I have no reservations about suggesting you just go ahead and grab a membership now.

They offer group fitness classes Monday through Saturday, and actually have both a spinning room and mind-body room in addition to the group fitness area. The locker rooms are clean and include a steam room. For those who purchase locker subscriptions, you can even add on a laundry service for an extra charge. Unfortunately, it is not a dry clean service, but I imagine it works for those who prefer keeping washer-friendly attire and even athletic-wear at the gym. There is street parking, and there's a garage attached to the building that you can park in, but I've never actually had to use it since there isn't much traffic when I go at 6 am. My only complaint with the design is that there is only one set of bathrooms, which is on the ground floor. It's incredibly annoying to be in the middle of a spinning class and have to go downstairs to the women's locker room just to use the restroom! However, I give this gym 4 stars because the managers are wonderful. We had a problem with a spinning instructor who was consistently absent from a scheduled class, and the management handled the situation beautifully once it was brought to their attention. All in all, this gym is a great stop for anyone who works or lives downtown.

They have very few scheduled classes for you to come and they're all during midday or after work hours so there's no early morning classes if that's something you're looking for for your health journey as far as equipment goes it's pretty regular not too old but not anything new. They do have a small steam room, which I enjoy. They do offer personal training, but it is extremely expensive and I did feel like I had to work with their schedule versus them being able to work with mine so it ended up being very inconvenient for me. They have also changed management and location personnel and I think that's made a big difference in a positive way so if you are in the downtown area and they fit your needs, give them a try but overall they just really didn't fit my needs.

And when it was Luan heading it up, you know when it comes to the cutting edge of fitness in Bham, he is the man and so follow him I did and I am so glad I did!!! There is a "cross-fit" aspect to the conditioning workouts, although with a definite twist. Everyday is not a 1,2,3 go and hit your redline. You actually spend time during the week working on positioning and form. There is one day focusing on active recovery. Some days they will throw in steel maces which are so much fun and beyond challenging. It's all about the whole body, including what you put in your body as well. To top things off, during every class time, there is a simultaneous class running in strength training and Olympic weightlifting. Because its not all about conditioning, but all recent studies in fitness and keeping your body in top condition is including strength training. And with Luan at the helm who has devoted his career in the fitness world to the study of Olympic weight training, this is the real deal. And don't be afraid if you have never done it. The trainers are there to work your through and make sure your form and movement is where it should be. WH has even formed an Olympic weightlifting team that has been competing around the southeast and doing really well. But not only do you get top equipment and instruction, the community is one of the best I have ever been associated with. Encouraging, open, caring and just people you want to hang with. I'm no longer embarrassed to show my arms in sleeveless dresses and tops, and my muscles are more defined. I will caution you though, you get what you put into it. If you only come once a week you probably won't see results. This is something you have to work for (as is any workout facility). I tried OT while I was traveling through Birmingham, and I've been wanting to try an OT studio in my hometown of Miami. I signed up for a class and was told to come in 45 minute prior to class, which going to other studios I knew that was way too much time. When I questioned it, they said 30 minutes prior was ok. I showed up before class and they completed paperwork, got me setup for a heart rate monitor, did a studio tour, and then introduced me to the coach (Avana) who showed me how the equipment worked and gave a brief overview of today's workout. Avana was an amazing coach, checked on you throughout the workout and kept you motivated along the way. So why not a complete 5 star experience? The heart rate system didn't work throughout the entire workout. The coach and the front desk team checked their system to see why it wasn't working and they couldn't remedy the problem. It really defeated the purpose of the OT system and workout because of the technical problem. It's hard to figure out how you need to modify how you are performing in your workout if their systems aren't working as they should be. Would I come back to OT? Probably, but it is for the staff alone. I don't fault them for faulty equipment.. but I do fault management for not keeping their systems up to date and maintained.
