We've had such an amazing experience at Evolve Checkmat, and I can't say enough great things about Professor Todd. From day one, he made both my daughter and I feel genuinely welcome. Professor Todd has a really special way of working with kids. He blends discipline with a warm, supportive style that earns the kids' respect and trust. One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been watching my daughter's confidence grow. Week after week, you can see her becoming more comfortable, more focused, and more proud of what she's learning. That kind of growth goes far beyond the mats, and it speaks volumes about the environment Professor Todd creates. It's one thing to be skilled, but it's another to break techniques down in a way kids can truly understand and he does that exceptionally well. The gym itself is another huge plus. It's always incredibly clean, well-organized, and has an open, airy feel that makes it a comfortable place to spend time. You can tell a lot of pride goes into maintaining the space. Overall, we couldn't be happier with our experience here, it's truly a special place. read more

I'm 54 years old with a history of training in wrestling and BJJ. I had torn my ACL doing BJJ about 5 years ago. I missed the training and the atmosphere. I've been hesitant because of the injury and arthritis in my knee, but I decided to check out Evolve and take their Muy Thai class. I've never done any type of striking marital arts but I decided to take a free trial class. I was impressed with the facility and the other members. Everyone was welcoming and patient knowing it was my first ever Muy Thai class. Todd the owner/instructor has created the best vibe/culture for his school. He keeps the classes engaging and fun. It's not easy learning the techniques but it has become a little more comfortable after a couple of weeks. I like the variety of class times, which is helpful with my work schedule. I may eventually look into going back to taking some Jiu Jitsu classes here at Evolve. If you're looking for a place that is not intimidating, but challenging then check out Evolve. Todd's been awesome in my transition to Muy Thai. read more

I am so glad I took the leap and joined Evolve. My 9 year old just received his grey belt this week. We signed up probably 14 or so months ago. Best decision I've ever made for my child. He's become so confident and independent! Not to mention extremely committed to the craft. He's now competed 3 times and absolutely loves it. Coach Todd is a fantastic instructor who is patient and respectful and has become and important figure in my sons life now. If you are ever debating Jiu Jitsu for yourself or your child, just go for it. It has been an amazingly positive experience that I'm thankful to be a part of. read more

Finding a gym for you or your little one can be intimidating. That first step is always the hardest. When we moved, we were looking for the right place... and Evolve immediately felt like family. From the moment I walked in, I felt comfortable, welcomed, accepted, and taken care of. Now my daughter trains here to, and she doesn't want to try any other gyms. This is her spot. The coaches are excellent. They know how to push you in a healthy, encouraging way. My daughter just had a major breakthrough with Coach Todd. He encouraged her to keep going, and from that moment on, she's been a completely different person. Highly recommend this gym read more

I cannot say enough amazing things about this gym! From day 1, we were welcomed by incredible mentors, skilled coaches, and truly exceptional Jiu-Jitsu professors. I originally brought my teen daughter here, hoping she'd build confidence and learn something new and she absolutely loves it. The transformation has been amazing to watch. I decided to join as well to support her, and now I'm completely addicted! It's honestly one of the best decisions we've made. The workouts are challenging and build strength, confidence, discipline, and real technique. Every class is progress! What really sets this place apart is the community. Everyone is so supportive, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your growth. Whether you're brand new or experienced, you feel comfortable, welcomed, and part of something special. Evolve has the best community, the best coaches, the best energy. So grateful this mom and daughter duo joined! read more

I knew I wanted to try Jiu Jitsu ever since my (then 5-year-old) daughter took her first class. She instantly fell in love with it, thanks to Professor Todd and Coach Michelle. It's been a little over a month since I joined Evolve, and I can't describe how much I enjoy it! I'm not gonna lie--coming to the first class was intimidating--but the community is so welcoming and supportive that those nerves quickly disappear, and you just start having fun. I joined Evolve with two other moms, and we've since met even more wonderful women who've been part of this journey much longer. It's no longer just about learning self-defense or staying active--it's about community, connection, friendship, and, for me personally, mental health and stability. If you're still questioning whether to join, just sign up for a free trial class--you won't regret it! read more

My son joined Evolve Junior Muay Thai Kickboxing in October 2023. He is on the Autism Spectrum which makes him easily distracted and not focused. Coach Kevin and coach Kyle are very patient with him. They teach him to be more discipline and focus on many of the keys training techniques such as hands always up to protect the face. Muay Thai Kickboxing is not just for exercising and self defense. It helps my son to be more focused, more confidence and more discipline. I saw a video clip of him two and a half years ago. It was night and day compared to now. He has more confidence and more focused now. But the most recognizable change is, he is more sociable with his peers, team mates, and the coaches. Join Evolve, Professor Todd is the founder and owner. Highly recommended Evolve Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. read more

Our 6 year old has been going to Evolve for a little over a year now. He has absolutely loved every minute. Even the days he when he would goof off and get called out for it, he still loved it. His confidence and skill has been awesome to watch grow. When we first tried the gym we went here and another place in RSM. We let our son choose which he would prefer and he hands down went with Coach Todd and Coach Michelle. Both coaches have a special way of connecting with the kids. They make the learning fun but also teach them respect and discipline along the way. If you want your kid to learn how to protect themselves, gain some major confidence, and have fun while doing it....Join Evolve. read more

My son started Muay Thai at Evolve and has had such a great experience. He is 13 and brand new to martial arts. The studio is open, inviting, clean and fresh. The other students were kind and welcoming. He is excited to go back and can't wait for his next practice. The instructors are patient and engaging with the new students as well as the experienced ones. Coach Todd really took the time to make sure everyone was getting the instruction and attention they needed. Since joining I have not only learned so much but I have lost a substantial amount of weight . The photo of before and after is a 2.5 month period. This gym is awesome and I can't say enough positive things about the training team and the culture. I really enjoy professor Todd's training and coaching. My son had a great time wresting during the summer here with the Tesoro team. Great facility.

The one and only jiu jitsu place to send your child to!! We have been with Evolve for 2+ years. I would drive my son from Irvine 4x a week to bring him here! Does not compare to any other jiu jitsu studios around! Coach Todd has truly given my son not only the best jiu jitsu training but also honed in on skills like respect, confidence, and sportsmanship. All I can say to Coach Todd is a huge thank you for your kindness and patience and that I will be forever grateful for all the positive changes I have seen in my son. My 6 year old son recently joined Evolve and is loving it! I have tried many other sports for him these past couple years, and this has been the first sport were he seems focused and eager to learn. I can already see his confidence improving only after 2 sessions. Coach Todd is inviting and made us feel at home instantly. I am amazed on how the young children respond to him. The facilities are clean and spacious! My husband who hasn't rolled around in 15+ years is really considering joining too! read more

My son has been training with Evolve for over 1.5 years and he has thrived under their tutelage. His original coaches nurtured his skills especially since he is typically one of the smallest kids in class (he's small for his age). Fast forward to today and he recently won gold at his last tournament! Coach Todd has a distinct style that is very vocal and proactive: he gives practical advice on the spot and is uncanny with how he can spot a child performing a technique in one corner then give suggestions to another child at the opposite corner. The gym is quite spacious and immaculately clean. Come check out a class to see the vibes for yourself! read more

In July of last year, I started training Muay Thai at Evolve. Training Martial Arts was something I have always wanted to do and I wasn't sure where to go or start. I instantly fell in love with Muay Thai and loved the vibe from the gym. I signed up immediately after my trial class. About 3 months later in October, I started training to Jiu Jitsu, and it was the best decision I have ever made for my self. I always wanted some sort of ability to defend myself, and Jiu Jitsu gave me a new level of confidence. Evolve has been great to me, and I cannot recommend it enough. I am so thankful for Professor Todd, the coaching staff, and the people I train with. Evolve is where it's at! read more

Love this place! My 4 year oId started classes here a few weeks ago and things have gone great. We are very pleased. The facility is immaculately clean and Coach Todd has been very welcoming. My son was having trouble with rough play with other boys his age. He would get scared and not want to see them again. After just a few classes he seems like he is more confidant and skilled in dealing with this situation. A friend of his was pushing him around at a play date and my son just sat on the boy instead of getting scared or upset and it ended. Also, its a great workout for him to get out some of his endless energy. We are hooked! read more

Great experience as first timers. My 7 year old started in the Jiu Jutsu jr class and excelled after a couple of months. His motivation to get better become apparent and with the help of Coach Todd and Michele he improved so much. His confidence level went up as he pushed himself to improve - his biggest motivator were the stripes and new belt. These rewards really inspired him to do better! We couldn't be happier as parents seeing his smile on his face each time he received recognition from his proud coaches! read more

Great group of people. Very welcoming to all, no matter the skill level. Signed up for Muay Thai a few months ago. Evolve Jiu jitsu academy in RMV /Ladera is probably the cleanest facility I have ever seen. Head instructor and owner, Todd is hands down the most patient and engaged coach I have had the pleasure of training under. I honestly cant say enough good things about his work ethic. I brought my teenage son to Evolve for the very first time last week. He was angry that I had "forced" him to join. Within minutes of meeting and working with Coach Todd, my son's entire demeanor changed. Coach Todd is heavily skilled, patient and is clearly respected by his staff and members. Although we have only been working with him for a short time, I have already noticed a positive change in my son. I highly recommend Coach Todd and his incredible academy. read more
