Damaged drywall near the window is hard to handle since I don't know how to deal with the corners.

Fernando is an excellent drywall technician. He is upfront, responsive, easy to communicate with, clearly knows his trade really well and produces excellent work. To go into a bit details, I have to talk about a bit of history. First a disaster strike. A backsplash demolition practically destroyed the drywall in the kitchen. The backsplash contractor didn't care to fix it and warned me that there might be a bit of problem down the road with all the moisture going into the wall. Stress. I tried replacing some of the heavily damaged panels myself. What's scary was large sections of damaged drywall adjacent to the cabinet and window remains out of my skill level. The first two pictures show the extent of damage I cannot handle. A lot of gypsum was pulled off leaving only the back paper, and large holes were still visible. Panic. So I called up Fernando to see if he could help. As I have experienced with many other contractors I expected and was ready to hear someone telling me how great past jobs they have done and how I shouldn't worry, but Fernando didn't talk BS. He asked for photos, try to understand my situation eagerly, and once he did, he explained to me how the extent of damage is manageable. He put the job into the context of the backsplash installation, identified key areas that need work, made me understand the key steps. The conversation showed me that Fernando truly looked into the situation, understood the problem, and knows how to solve it. That instantly gave me a level of confidence I have not really got from a lot of other contractors. And that was maybe 10 minutes of conversation. The job went as smooth as I could hoped for. On the day we set up to do the job he came with all the necessary equipment, and quickly assessed the damage close up before setting up dust cover to get started working. Little by little the damaged wall start to firm up and get filled up, and eventually fully restored to its former glory, as if nothing has happened. During the work I had numerous questions, trying to understand the process and learn some of the techniques. He was both very open and very good at giving me answers. He showed me how to patch some of the damages, explained the effect of each step, and when I asked he guided me through some of the hands on process to teach me the techniques. That effective communication greatly reduced my stress over the whole situation. After the repairs were done, Fernando restored the texture at the edge of the repair job, then cleaned up. He left with no mess behind, just a beautiful wall. Aside from the masterfully restored drywall, what I really liked was his communication style. He shows that he has a grip on the situation by concisely explaining his understanding and his solution. He doesn't avoid talking about details, and as long as I am asking he keeps giving me very understandable answers with contexts. That gives me a chance to have a grip on something I was hopelessly lost on, and if I can share his view of the job, I can give him my full confidence.

The house next door was underway as well and Dans guys were working on it. I popped in to see what these guys were about. what I saw was they were prefilling and flat tape eliminating all gaps prior to tooling out the bulk of it. The guy I was working for said it takes too much time to do that (the right way) . I ended up having to babysit cheap labor over at my job. it was challenging because they didn't speak English. The company tools we were provided were trash, Jimmy rigged . same goes for the sketchy scaffolding. Dans crew had 2x4 railings around the stairwells for safety. ample scaffolding in good shape. The tools his guys were running were in tip top shape. just a fact, if your pumping mucho dinero into advertising, and you've got a team frivolously bidding jobs in an office that looks like the computer lab at UCSC, your going to get a lot of work around here. if you were to go back a few years and compare jobs . Consolidated drywall vs. Dan Moran Drywall. I would bet the farm that EVERY time you would find the cracks, the popped screws, the sloppy texture, the sunken corners, the flashing tape was a corner cutting race for profit , a Consolidated Specialty.

We had him tackle a significant makeover and paint job on our 122 year old cottage. Omar's bid was a good 20% higher than #2. We chose him because of how clearly he talked the details, from paint chemistry for a salt air climate to the right way to replace those old cedar shingles. He also had a new kitchen window created from scratch to match the ones in the rest of the old house. Over the 3 - 4 week project, Omar and his crew invariably left the place immaculate, no clutter, no mess. The answer to nearly ever request was "Yes, we can do that." While they are not cheap, the tab for all of the extras we asked for was fair. And we have no doubt that the work will hold up very well. When you think about how valuable your home is, why would you not hire the best in the business to fix whatever is wrong with it? The property will appreciate, and pay you back 10X over.

The estimate was the most comprehensive that I received, which did build trust even though it was on the high side. In retrospect, the labor rate was too high for the quality of work performed. "Omar the Handyman" didn't do any of the work, he farmed it out. For projects allowing more planning, I don't think that I would work with them again. Doctor-level labor rates for amateur-level workmanship? Nah.
