Jaime said that was not a problem and gave me a verbal quote, stating he could start on the following week. I had passed up on a better offer with a different contractor for my driveway so I could have it completed faster. He later sent me an invoice for the work the same day of his visit, and I had not had a chance to review it until the next morning, when he texted me to follow up to ask if I had looked. In review, the invoice indicated I was paying by "transfer," and stated that "work wouldn't start until checks cleared a 5-day business hold" and that a down payment of more than 50% of the project would be required to begin. This was not what was discussed. Also, the price was more than we had originally discussed due to the addition of a 3.5% sales tax, which I thought was odd, considering in Michigan there is a 6% sales tax. Still, he wanted more for the job now than he originally stated. I started to do a little more research on "J&L" CONcrete, and was reading the VERY FEW available local reviews that are out there. I decided to tell him I was not moving forward, seeing that he has previously been deemed unreliable and also feeling something else was off. He responded to me at first (via text) asking about why I decided against it. After giving him an explanation he wasn't owed, he then proceeded to send me a follow up text 15-30 minutes later saying that "they may be delivering two concrete dumpster[s] I try [tried to] call to cancel them but there not open today" and "and the crush[ed] concrete I'll try first thing Monday morning." I asked why he'd order those things without getting a downpayment first, and he stated he paid "out of pocket" because I told him we could get started via text. Despite this, I had not yet signed an official contract authorizing the work, yet the invoice he sent me already had his signature on it. I expected him to ask me for my signature before the work started, as that is generally the way a CONtract works. Despite these red flags, I didn't trust my gut and basically said fine, let's go. He would later ask me that Sunday if he could drop off "his" Bobcat for the project, which didn't happen. He also knew I intended on paying by check based on our original discussion. He came Monday morning, took my down payment and had his "crew" tear out my entire driveway. The first check was written out to "J&L Concrete, LLC." As the tear out was happening, he disappeared off site and later sends me a text, reporting that he was having trouble processing my check at his "bank," further asking me if I "had the money." Next, he instructed me that he would need me to write another check to his "wife." While he was gone, another employee (not the two working on the tearout) he brought along with him was laying in my yard playing on his cell phone. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I still cut the second check to his wife and he later returned and verbally confirmed the down payment was sufficient to continue work on the project. He said nothing more to me that day, and he and his "crew" left without saying anything to me, while leaving all of their tools out in the lawn. Interestingly, there were no dumpsters or loads of crushed concrete delivered that day. The old driveway was hauled off in a trailer that was also used to bring the Bobcat to the jobsite - not the "dumpsters" he stated where being delivered. The next day, he and his crew no-showed and Jamie wouldn't respond to my text message asking if they'd be working the job that day. I tried calling, but his phone number was "out of service." I had graciously overlooked the previous red flags, but decided this was the last straw, and sent him a text telling him I would no longer be utilizing his services. I then immediately received a reply via text with a threat/promise to take me to court for the full amount of the project he originally quoted me (with his 3.5% tax). He told me that he "wasn't doing any more work until my check cleared," despite telling me the previous day we were good to proceed. I asked him to bill me for the tear out but was told "that's not how this works." He then attempted to extort me by demanding $5k+ just to go away. I should have called the police. The next day, I learned the guys who tore out my driveway didn't work for him and had a LEGITIMATE company. They said Jamie had been dodging them, so they contacted his wife and learned he was "in jail." I am running out of room for the entire version of the story I will summarize the rest: A week later, I paid the other company for the tearout, plus an additional $500. Ultimately, Jamie received nothing from me. He doesn't use a bank, he cashes checks at a liquor store. He does NOT have a "banker," it's just some dude running a check cashing service. Jamie is a hustler. Avoid him at all costs.
