I headed to Evil Genius for their once-a-year Hot Ones-style wing challenge, built off the popular YouTube show where celebrities torch their tastebuds while answering questions. The brewery used the same sauces and ran their own version of the rapid-fire Q&A -- and it was an absolute blast. Somewhere around the middle rounds I'm pretty sure my mouth tried to leave my body, but that's part of the charm. The questions were great, the energy was high, and the whole place had that "controlled chaos with a smile" vibe that makes for a perfect night out. Even without the challenge, Evil Genius is worth the trip. The beer is cold, the staff is sharp, and the whole place carries that fun, slightly mischievous Philly spirit without any of the big-city hassle. Burned my mouth? Definitely. Would do it again? We attended a drag brunch here today and it was so much fun! The event was fantastic and the place was very cool! They were still decorated for Christmas, which was amazing! The staff were great, the drinks were perfect and the food was good. Nice, clean and plenty bathrooms. We only tried appetizers but they were really good, we got the hummus platter and the cranberry dip, but I don't think I got any pictures of the food. Such a cool vibe and great staff. The place is huge with an outdoor area as well. I just wish the entire bar were open inside, as it's hit or miss with the seating. I also don't like waiting in line for a beer as sometimes people don't know what they want, and it can be frustrating when you're waiting behind them. They have a full bar and a lot of beers on tap. You can order flights, which allows you to taste four at a time. They have mocktails as well as cocktails and the bartenders can make you anything you'd like. TLDR: Awesome atmosphere, great beer. Perfect place to spend a Saturday with friends. Vibe: 4/5. Located in the heart of Fishtown, Evil Genius has a sprawling complex complete with both indoor and outdoor seating. On the Saturday I visited, they had the entire street blocked off directly in front of the brewery for an impromptu concert and street hangout. I am unsure if this is a weekly occurrence, but it was very well organized and welcoming to everyone. They had several tables and beer tents set up as well as a mobile axe throwing booth (free!). The band playing was extremely talented and played a great selection of pop classic covers throughout the afternoon. My only wish is that Evil Genius rented a few port o pots for the outside festivities, as the brewery only has a handful of unisex stalls which caused a wait for the bathroom. Service: 5/5. The staff at Evil Genius were great from first to last pint. When we visited, you could purchase beer at both the inside bar and an outside tent setup in the street. Both locations were quick to get patrons their order and friendly in the process. Security manning the door was also friendly as you entered and exited the front door. Beer: 4/5. The beers at Evil Genius were both creative and tasty. I was able to sample the bacon beer and one of their IPAs and both were tasty. Pricing was reasonable as well, with pints hovering around the $8 range. If I wasn't so caught up in the outdoor festivities, I would have loved to sample a flight of beer to really get a better idea of their beer offerings, but maybe next time! read more

This was a quick stop in Philly for the family. It caught my eye because I read in some reviews/blogs it was known for 90s music and ambience. There was definitely some of that with the music and de or in the front of the place, but I was hoping for a more grungy, pop punk vibe. Our party of four shared two flights - my husband and I got numbers 2,4,6,8 and 10. The lemon chamomile Hefe and the Lucky Charms IPA were definitely the biggest letdowns - not overly flavorful. My friends and I went here for Wednesday night quizzo and it was really fun! The place is a nice size, lots of seating. I don't normally like beer but get fomo when at brewery's, so I tried the "I pick things up and put them down" (and got a small size) and I finished it, which I normally never do so that's a good sign. I thought the place was kind of warm, but maybe that's just me lol. the appetizers weren't that bad, we tried the hummus and the Buffalo chicken dip, but for the price I expected a little more. NOT a family establishment. The bartender or Manger aggressively approached our table shouting about a couple of 5 year olds in the yard playing. Not only was this inappropriate and hostile, but it also escalated to the point where his friends and family--seated behind us--got involved, nearly causing a brawl. The situation could have been handled much better. Every parent was consistently watching the kids, and we were all there to enjoy the Phillies game, having already spent a significant amount of money. I've been to evil genius several times - for drag shows or being dragged by friends to go. I personally would skip, but there are a lot of redeeming qualities. The ambience is not my taste, with the bathrooms painted with cartoon characters, huge leather couches and booths, old board games and trivia games strewn around tables, but it's definitely a vibe. It's normally pretty busy and you have to order food from an app which is a less personalized experience. The food is your standard bar food fare. The beers are all a bit Gimmicky, but I do love the peanut butter one solely for my love of PB. This is a fun happy hour spot! Happy hour is all day on Tuesday but the brewery closes at 8. There is a large outdoor space with socially distanced tables. The menu is available via a QR code. I live nearby and have lived in Philadelphia for almost 10 years, so of course I have been to Evil Genius plenty of times before. But today July 27, 2022 I stopped by Evil Genius on my way home after picking up my 2 year old daughter from day care to get some dinner for the 2 of us. When I got there my daughter started to have an unexpected toddler tantrum. Daddy here tried to keep everything cool and calm my daughter down, but it was a real struggle for at least 5 minutes and I was losing bad as my daughter was crying in my arms and on the floor in front of the whole bar. That's when Elisa the director of operations came to the rescue. Even though her shift was over, she came over to my table with stickers and sweetness and took extra special care of my baby girl. She took her for a walk around the bar, showed her the fun toys, took her outside to see the train and the different color chairs, played blocks with her, gave her high fives, and completely changed my daughter's mood when I had been admittedly struggling to do so. The whole staff was kind to us that evening but Elisa was just wonderful. I'll remember her kindness for a long time. Evil Genius is a classy, family friendly place with delicious beer, good food, fun atmosphere, and it deserves all the support it gets. read more

Next up on the brewery visits...The Evil Genius! What immediately caught my eye was the super clever names of the beers. Hard to pass up on beer named after 90s pop songs or IG hashtags. Stopped in after brunch with friends on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed. We got lucky to find a table towards the back. The process to get your flights is cool. At the beginning of the line you get a card and write down the numbers of the 5 options you want and when you reach the register the staff put them in this circular A-E order and enjoy! Staff was friendly. Learned that tours are ONLY offered at 2pm Saturdays with the exception of private tours booked for groups. Music choice was interesting to say the least, but def good sing alongs lol. Games are available at tables (good luck with the mismatch Jenga pieces). Multiple bathrooms which is great considering how packed it was. Oh! my favoirte part after the great beer was the PRICE! Can't beat it coming from a New Yorker. Came in on an early Saturday evening and it was MOBBED. Tunes consists of Fall Out Boy, Blink182, and some other alternative boy bands. The establishment is decked out with QR codes on what it appears to be a rental from Blockbuster. As this was a fairly quick stop while bar hopping with friends, I will say that there is a pretty hefty list to choose from. I did not end up getting food, but from what I did see on the menu it's definitely a bar food situation, think pretzels, mozzarella sticks that kind of situation. Evil Genius is definitely more of a lively place as well, as it was packed when we arrived. Luckily they have a large staff so it was not hard to get served once we arrived. This is a fun spot to come to even in the midst of covid! They have a large indoor area with tables separated by plastic dividers. We came with a large group so unfortunately due to the restrictions we had to split into smaller groups. The menu has a ton of different drink options and beer flights as well. I opted for the beer flight which had 6 different mini glasses. Can't say I loved them all but it was fun to try different types. For food they have the usual array of bar foods. We tried the pretzel bites which were freshly baked and served with a good cheesy sauce. As well you can order games off the menu for the table (although you do have to pay). Came here as part of the inaugural Keystone Comic Con. Evil Genius partnered with the con for a lime-ginger saison, and it makes sense, a lot of the decor is pretty nerdy, and evil genius implies just the same. It was a hop and a skip away from where I was staying in Center City but I'm glad I got the chance to try out this spot. On top of the saison, I did a beer flight, which included 5 beverages of your choice. I really liked their saison, which I think was a con specialty. Out of the flight, I think I only liked 1 or 2 out of the bunch, but that's okay, no hard feelings. Staff was very accommodating and the space is both large and cozy. The beer is good, and it's a nice brewery with outdoor space during this time. Watch out for the food menu, you should totally go to the food truck right outside. You're able to bring that food in, and the portions are fairly large. The food at the brewery is selling is very small, and not worth the price. My Mac and cheese was 1/4 cup, and $7!! During the Labor Day Weekend, my friends and I came across Evil Genius Beer (EGB) by chance as we were hoping to go to Yards Brewing Company but they had an hour long wait for a table. However, we were very happy that we came to EGB instead as it did not disappoint. Pros: - open and clean outdoor seating with plenty of space - walked in and got a table for 5 without any wait - dog friendly - very good tasting beers with eye-catching names. There is something for everyone even the people who do not like drinking beer. I ordered I Love Lamp and it was one of the best beers I have ever had. - friendly staff - food options were good. Our table had ordered a pretzel and it accompanied the beer. Cons: - parking can be hard at times, but free parking is available. Pro Tip: - they are very good about sampling beers before you commit. - also very good about take-out. just call ahead and you can pick up the beer in minutes. read more

Evil Genus Beer Company to be exact. And that name packs oh so much more than just some totally taste-tacular brews. Here's the "second off" (to go along with the first), when I visited this Philly spot, it was July. And what was this zany brewery doing? Celebrating Christmas. X-Mas in July doesn't really do it for me (usually), but on a beer level, I was down. The place was decked out in Christmas decor, though even without any garland or mistletoe Evil Genius is still awesome. Large enough to house plenty of thirsty customers while still cozy in style and setup. They have a friggin' couch area with Sega games...what more could you ask for?! (There's food too btw). Well, you could ask for beer. At EG, you'll find your beer menu on old VHS boxes (the 90's kid inside of me was elated) and a nice selection to boot. A flight was of course the way to go and I have to say it was tough deciding. The choices did sound good, but so did the names. I mean when you brew a beer called Purple Monkey Dishwasher then you've sold me. It's those names (and their pop culture connections) that just make this experience a little extra fun. Okay, enough. It's actually time to talk beer. I did try PMD (a chocolate peanut butter porter) and it did not disappoint. A perfect balance of the two ingredients along with a little robust kick. I Love Lamp was also pretty perfect in its pineapple Hefeweizen ways. For the IPA in all of us, Utopian Blaster had that great bitter session balance. True to the "season", Santa! I Know Him (a festive saison) was out of this world. And let's just say the beer with the Prince name (you'll figure it out from the pic) was original and rounded out a spectacular selection of suds. There's truly some evil minds concocting these beers, but it's to our advantage! Overall, Evil Genius Beer Company is nothing short of nuts. It's also funny, and cool, and kooky, and tasty and *insert positive adjective here*. I don't know how else to put it. Hey, Yards is a great brewery (stop if you haven't been), but if you're in Philadelphia and looking for quality craft beer, Evil Genius can't be skipped. Full disclosure, I do think Evil Genius is one of the best Philly area breweries around. Since I always enjoy their bottled concoctions (and have never had any of their stuff on tap), I was excited to give their brick and mortar location a try. I love this place! The brewery is on a lonely stretch of Front street but I kind of like the isolation. The building is spacious and I really like the set up they have going on, with the back of the brewery. Wing open air and having such a large outside patio. Everything on tap was great and a completely different experience from their bottles. Perhaps their most famous beer, Purple Monkey Dishwasher, is really amazing on tap. You can really get the peanut butter flavors on the top notes which are usually subdued in bottle form. Other stand outs included 'And it don't stop' which was their saison offering, which was very tart but still pleasant to drink, and 'Ermahgerd! Hrny!' which is their blonde ale infused with honey. The honey was very prominent but not overpowering or cloying. So this brewery gets a big two thumbs up from me. Their beers are well crafted and walk the fine line between traditional and outrageous, somehow managing to please everyone in the process. This might be my favorite brewery in Philly, and it's definitely worth the trip. read more
