I have had a rocky relationship with this location. Sometimes it's smooth sailing and other times…read moreit's a total mess. For years, I stopped coming here to the point that I forgot there even WAS a location near the Morse Red Line. But lately, because I've been grocery shopping at Morse Fresh Market more this year than I ever have in 18+ years of living on the North Side, I gave this Family Dollar a shot again. As was the case the last time, this one was pretty good. I have to compliment one employee in particular. When I first walked up to his register, I rolled my eyes because he had on headphones. Who does that? How out-of-body do you want to be to wear headphones while at the register with a bunch of customers? But somebody yelled something from the side, and he put down one of my items before he could start ringing me up. I had no clue what happened. He just beelined to another aisle. After a few seconds, I realized that they were trying to get someone out of the store. He never yelled. Didn't get aggressive. Didn't physically move anybody. Just stood there in all his "don't be tough today" aura. And the commotion left. He came back to the register, and I asked him, "Are you a security guard or a cashier?" He smiled and said, "Both." And that was when I heard his voice. He started talking, and I absolutely think he should have a side job (or a full-time career) in narration or voiceover work. He has a really intelligent, well-spoken voice that would sound great on audio books. It startled me a little because I didn't expect him to say one word, just ring me up with those headphones on. And I didn't not expect him to sound like the James Earl Jones type. I sorta heard him talking to another customer about the chocolate bars he was supposed to sell, but I didn't really listen to him closely. I talked to him briefly, and I joked about how I wouldn't recommend anybody trying him. Physically, it's just not a smart move. But he was the nicest guy. The headphones don't even make a difference. He was able to promo chocolate bars (I don't eat dairy so I didn't buy one), secure the store, ring me up and be charming at the same time. Whatever he is making, give him double (or a management position).

But I'm updating my review SOLELY on the cashier I met for the first time yesterday. It's been a couple of decades since I was a cashier, and I remember how much you had to bite your tongue when it came to some of the comments people would make. In my case, it was usually management and not the customers. But this location always has a colorful bunch of customers that just do the most RANDOMLY outrageous stuff for no absolute reason, from digging in their noses to screaming across the aisles to completely ignoring the pandemic six-footer rule. Lately, it's been fairly normal in there. That or I'm lucking out and going at all the right times. But yesterday, I was baffled by a conversation between a white, male customer and a black, female cashier. In what should've been a non-controversial conversation about the holiday season, she mentioned off-handedly that her daughters have polar opposite personalities but she had a good Christmas nonetheless. And this guy had the audacity to ask her if she had "Bebe's Kids." That was so unnecessarily offensive, and I know he would not ask a white lady cashier this same question. When she tried to professionally and calmly correct him that these weren't small children, he switched to asking her were they like the kid in "Home Alone." How many different ways are you going to insult this woman's parental habits? I was furious, but she played it so cool. Had she responded with what I was thinking, she'd have been terminated. For that, I commend her for keeping her cool under what was a very ignorant conversation. I finally said something about not needing a bag and pushing my stuff to the front to get him to hurry up, bag his stuff and get away from me (and her). She was just as nice to me, but I do wonder if those comments rubbed her wrong. Either way, her level of patience is management material, and I hope someone acknowledges that. Happy Holidays to her for being a patient, professional and take-the-high-road mother!

Egad, this place is so scary, families ought to bring their kids here for Halloween instead of paying admission to a haunted house! Enter at your own risk (and avoid wearing open shoes). I've visited stores in impoverished countries that are far nicer. The hopeless mess is in stark contrast to better-maintained Dollar Tree stores in the 'burbs. Merchandise is strewn on shelves helter-skelter. The floor, which likely hasn't seen a mop since the Obama era, is littered with a mix of trash, blobs of crud, and trampled merchandise. Spills are ignored. Some of the aisles are impassable, blocked by an avalanche of cartons and junk. Heck, I was afraid to breathe the air without a mask!

The staff is adequate but they seem incapable of picking up the items on the floor, I'm not sure if it's a phobia or they just cannot bend over and do it due to medical issues. Regardless, if you can put up with the mess, the somewhat lazy staff and the long lines at the register, this is a great place to shop.
