Ok. I have a transmission issue…read more Brought it in to determine the root-cause. They found an old (not cleared) thermostat problem that I fixed a year ago. It didn't totally close, thus not allowing the Cat o get up to temperature quickly enough. I replaced for $25 and 45 minutes, easy. Check-engine light disappeared. But obviously the code locked in. And also they said I needed a full replacement transmission. Which I don't deny may be required. , sorta. I am 71 years old, done professional car work since 17. The ONLY reason I am not doing this myself is age. But that said, before I would tear down anything I would already know what component is bad. A valve, cam sensor, etc. My symptoms are of a valve-body stuck valve, causing the clutch(s) to not fully engage. Thus I wanted a more concise explanation for why I should give them $5,000 - $6,000 to replace the entire Xmission. I really should have had a talk with the trained mechanic that could go into depth about the detailed reason it is giving me problems. But I got the worker at the register explaining the estimate to me. I have 100% confidence she has ZERO true mechanical knowledge/training past what to say. She should have called the Tech to talk to me. Had that happened I would have set an appointment to have it replaced. But given the weak thermostat ($330) ghost diag, I had zero confidence about the rest of their work. Reminds me of "give a kid a hammer and everything looks like a nail".

Not all Superheros Wear Capes--sometimes they come in mechanic shirts and hail from Knoxville,…read moreTennessee. I loved doing business with these AAMCO boys; it is a place where service is not a department, but their entire establishment. The nightmarish transmission debacle, which began at the unprofessional/unscrupulous AAMCO in Roanoke, Virginia, finally ended three weeks and 260 miles later. It included mobile mechanics, tow trucks, a lot of added expense, and finally a literal heave-ho to push my 8000-pound bus named Bubba the final distance, when we arrived at the AAMCO shop, in Knoxville, Tennessee, lovingly known as Knucklebusters. When my bus was pushed into the shop, I was distressed and when they put Bubba on the rack, pulled the tranny pan, and a waterfall of black inklike fluid, with silver specks, gushed out, my distress turned to heartbreak. Bubba was more broken now than when I took him to Roanoke Transmission in the first place. Mike, the owner, looked at me and said, "you know, auto repairs are already hard--and we don't want to make them any more difficult." They were words he and his team lived by. The Knoxville boys, set about turning my worst bus life story into one that not only corrected the wrongs of Roanoke AAMCO but re-instilled my faith in people, by going above and beyond, in every sense of the word. They walked me through every step of the repairs/process--explaining what happened, why it happened, and what they were going to do. What happened was that Roanoke Transmission installed the transmission incorrectly and when I returned to them, they refused to assist in any way, even suggesting I find another shop--(although I had a warranty). What Mike and his Knucklebusters Team did was call Roanoke and offer solutions for an expedient repair. They offered to rebuild the pulverized transmission in Knoxville, gather parts, and even drive to Roanoke to pick up the transmission that was 'allegedly' on the shelf there. Roanoke declined any and all offers; thus tying Knoxville's hands, unnecessarily prolonging the repair, and essentially making me homeless; because when you live in a bus and are without that bus, you are homeless. Knucklebusters helped me find a hotel and drove me to it, later returning to pick me up, so I could get additional items from my bus. When I switched hotels, they once again shuttled me about. Being unfamiliar with Knoxville, they recommended a couple of great dive bars near my motel, which I love and loved. (Peyton's Place and The Pint House). Knoxville AAMCO kept in daily communication, just to let me know I was not forgotten and to see if I needed anything or there was anything they could do to help me out. After EIGHT days, Roanoke had the transmission rebuilt; and here is where Knucklebusters outdid themselves. They DROVE 1/2way to Roanoke to pick up my transmission, to save shipping time! They returned and installed my transmission on that same day...perfectly, I might add. After about a week, they checked in with me, to ensure Bubba was running fine and we were doing well. I left AAMCO Knoxville, loving having done business with them and wanting to tell everybody about the A++ experience, with the fantastic Knucklebusters. Maya Angelou said that people will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel. Thank you AAMCO Knoxville, for demonstrating empathy and making me feel and know that you care. The real cherry on top? They made their mailbox out of Bubba's transmission!

However, after reading bad reviews on the other companies, I didn't trust them to do the repairs. I read reviews on Marshalls and they were highly recommended. They sounded like an honest company that could be trusted to diagnose and repair my transmission. I took my car there on a Tuesday morning and had to leave it. When I didn't hear anything by the 2nd day, I tried calling and nobody answered the phone. So I left a message and nobody returned my call either! I had to ask a friend (that lived near the shop) to go check on my car. The receptionist told him that they were running codes on my car right then (Wed. afternoon). So I expected a diagnosis Wednesday but nobody called to tell me anything. I waited all the next day (Thurs) and still no phone call and no diagnosis! By this time, they had my car 3 days. This was my only transportation (they knew that) and I have no family to help me. I was out of groceries and had to walk 2 miles (at 81) to get my bills at the post office. I knew this could not go on any longer, so I left a message that I would pick my car up Friday (4th day). I had to hire a ride there, and when I picked up my car I was not even given a piece of paper - NO DIAGNOSIS, NO NOTHING! Unbelievable! I did without any transportation for days for absolutely nothing! Would never go there again and certainly do NOT recommend!!!

I called Transmission Corporation of America, and Julie (one of the managers) kindly suggested that they take a look at it. Upon inspection (a large up-front cost), I was told that the entire transmission would need to be replaced. Comparing the cost of the repair to the value of the car, we were trying to decide if it was best worth repairing. We called the shop to let them know that we were going to put money towards a new vehicle instead, and both managers (Julie and Michelle) encouraged us to keep the vehicle, and that they would see what they could work out to make it a more affordable repair. After some hours, I received a return phone call where they were able to find a rebuilt transmission that would be a little more affordable, and we'd have it back quickly. We decided to take the rebuilt transmission and keep our car for a little while longer. Upon replacing the transmission and paying for the repairs, the car had the same issues not 5 miles from the shop. I brought it back the next morning, and they kept it to find out the issue. Upon replacing what they thought was the problem this time, I drove it home again and the lights came on once more, so I instantly turned around and brought it back. They worked diligently through the week to root out the true problem, which turned out to be an electrical computer component associated with the transmission functions. Once the computer was replaced, and we all had finally had enough of the frustrations, they were successful with resolving the transmission issues! I have been successfully driving this car for a little under a week now, and the problems have disappeared. Although this was a frustrating and expensive experience, I was very satisfied with how we were treated as customers, and how the final cost remained firm at the end. They were dedicated to reassuring us that we made the right decision to make these repairs, and I'm glad we did. Thanks to the whole TCA service crew who took the extra time to focus on the vehicle and get it back to reliable working condition. Each one of our interactions was positive, and we were able to trust the people and the process.

Update to my last visit. Don't bother with these people. They did an alignment but my steering wheel was off center. Had to drive all the way to FL with it like that. When I got back I took it in and asked them to center the steering wheel and left it with them about an hour later they call and tell me it's ready so I go pick it up and drive to lunch. On the way I notice that my steering wheel is still not centered. So I took it back and told the little skinny guy at the counter my wheel still wasn't centered. He goes and talks to the tech in back and comes back and tells me that it is centered and I must have worn out steering components. Lol I drive this thing everyday I should know if it's centered or not and if I have worn out steering components. I told him I'll take it somewhere else.
