This is an impractical route given the cost, resulting in the company retaining funds without contractual justification. What concerned me most was the owner's statement that situations like this arise multiple times each year. For a company working with elderly clients and their families, that pattern raises serious ethical questions. Transparency and fair treatment should be standard; that was not my experience. Separately, the service was initially presented as charging higher rates to ensure quality caregivers, and rates were even increased shortly after services began. However, multiple caregivers shared during service that they were paid minimum wage. Given that we were charged roughly three times minimum wage, this suggests that most of the client fees went to line the owner's pockets. Employees also claimed that the owner was hostile and unfairly retaliatory. The result was frequent turnover, with better caregivers leaving for more fairly compensated work and overall service quality declining. Caring for a loved one in your home is an all hands on deck sort of situation (depending on the needs of your loved one). In our case it was anyways, and there were some aspects of caregiving that were beyond our capabilities. We met with a representative and discussed needs and expectations, what they could and could not do and they matched us with a couple caregivers who were absolute angels on earth. The time they spent in our home was MORE than appreciated and worth EVERY PENNY. Our loved one looked forward to her visits with Michelle or Mickie each week, and the companionship and expertise that they showed her (and us) was undlessly appreciated.
