We just finished our wedding, and it was the best day of our lives. This would not have been possible without our wedding planner Stephanie Wilson from Every Last Detail
We are delighted with Stephanie, and I think her excellence can be summarized in a few domains:
1. Inspiring Possibilities
2. Honest Assessment
3. Keeping on Track
4. Goodwill with Vendors
5. Running the Big Day
Expanding on each of these:
1. Inspiring possibilities
- when we first met with Stephanie, we had an initial "get to know you" session to mutually feel each other out and see if we were a good fit for one another. As my then fiancee and I discussed our aspirations for an ideal wedding, Stephanie helped us problem-solve and made suggestions both in broad terms (themes, setting) and in the specifics (giving ideas about specific locations and timetables)
- My fiancee and I are both very deliberate and analytical people, and before that first meeting, we had fully intended to seek out other wedding planners to comparison shop, but we left the meeting so impressed with Stephanie that we realized we couldn't do better
2. Honest assessment
- the next meeting was a long session (several hours) going over "Every Last Detail" to make an estimate of cost for every item, ranging from the big ticket items (e.g., the wedding venue) to the little items (place cards, flowers for chairs, etc)
- this was a great meeting, and made us both (.... very anal and detail oriented) comfortable that we weren't going to have any surprises
- We had other big financial considerations at the same time (buying our first home together), so it was reassuring that we could trust Stephanie that the wedding budget was an accurate assessment
3. Keeping on track
- this benefit of working with Stephanie caught us off guard in a good way. For all the wonderful things Stephanie did, I think the #1 reason we are delighted we hired her is that she kept us on track in making big decisions, so that by the time 2 months before the wedding came around, we had very little stress
- Stephanie would send a detailed monthly itinerary of things to do, and helped us make big decisions early, so that we were never behind
- This was a huge, huge help. As my already married friends would tell us stories of horror about pre-wedding anxiety, we honestly couldn't relate, because all the planning was so smooth.
- In the week before the wedding, as my fiancee and I would take our nightly walks together, we noted how calm and relaxed we were, which I think made a big impact on allowing us to be emotionally present for our wedding weekend
4. Goodwill with vendors
- another thing that caught us off guard in a good way- how much of a difference Stephanie made in terms of her goodwill with vendors
- Stephanie's been doing this for over 15 years, and because she's so competent, the vendors we worked with love working with her
- coordinating a wedding requires working with a LOT of vendors (DJ, band (we had both), flowers, venue coordinator, pastry chef, hotel, shuttles, invitations, etc)
- we had several vendors comment to us that we were really fortunate that we were working with Stephanie
- we realized as the wedding planning went on that a collection of vendors is much more than the sum of their parts. For example, Stephanie was very selective in suggesting vendors who had done weddings at our venue before, so there were no surprises in terms of transportation, lighting, where outlets were located, etc
- it was also important that the vendors got along with one another. This was a total non-issue
- the one major vendor we used that was new for Stephanie was our photographer, who had just moved to the area. Stephanie helped mentor him and familiarize him to the location and details, which helped him do his job better
- I would not under-estimate the importance of a wedding coordinator for this domain. Even if we had hired the exact same vendors without Stephanie, it would not have run as smoothly without Stephanie to make sure all the pieces fit together
5. Running the big day
- Stephanie actually helped coordinate 3 days (a very large rehearsal dinner of over 100 people, a wedding of 200, and a post-wedding brunch of 60)
- I'll focus on the wedding day itself, which was an elaborate day that involved ferries, shuttles, and a wedding day from 11am-11pm. There was a LOT of stuff going on
- the day was phenomenal. We had the best day of our lives, and so many guests commented it was the best wedding they've ever been to
There's so many more wonderful things I could say about Stephanie, but those are the Big 5.
I will comment on one more, though, and that's cost. It's hard to know for sure, but I think when you look at how much Stephanie saved us in terms of wise vendor selection, guiding us on which details we could ignore, and driving a hard bargain, I suspect that Stephanie ended up covering her costs in terms of money saved.
All in all- Stephanie was great! read more
