The apartments were spacious and had modern appliances, storage, and neutral colors. The common areas we saw on our tour included a dining area, library, lunchroom, store, pool, gym and pub. It was cold when we toured but we could see walking trails and were told about gardening areas. We have looked at other communities and none so far have had the range of events and activities that Whitney Center did. They did a great job answering our questions. His previous facility he fell and they didn't find him for hours. When we brought him here I was adamant about having a camera in his room. The leadership begged me to "lead with trust" don't put the camera there. I said I needed it to be there for at least 30 days until I was comfortable so could look in on my dad. Within 7 hours of moving him in he was abused by 2 CNA's at the facility. The male CNA verbally berated him for soiling himself. Yelling at him they the bathroom was right there and that he belongs in another facility. While he was manhandled to the bathroom, crying out in pain. The other CNA laughed while looking directly at the camera I placed. To be clear there was a note on the door indicating my camera was there. . After seeming the footage an hour later I rushed to the facility to see my dad and tell the nurse manager (absolutely also inadequate) what I saw and show her the footage. i made a police report but since there were no marks they could do Nothing even tho I showed them the stomach turning footage. I called the state of Connecticut too. But since this facility is "private pay" and not a T19 facility they would investigate but not really do anything. Both CNA's were fired and I believe their licenses taken. Other per diem CNA's told me similar stories even saying they were leaving their shift to report the facility for other violations as well. Do not trust this facility or any facility without pushing for a camera you can monitor. I'm so glad I found this out. There ARE wonderful care providers out there that do this work with compassion.Even in this facility. This sadly was our experience. The nurse manager was beyond incompetent and the leadership as well. Having someone with memory issues is very hard. You can feel like you don't have choices. You do. Go with your gut Good luck if you place a loved one here.

They also have live music once or twice a week ! They even have a beauty parlor to get your hair and nails done! Had I been told that this apartment wouldn't be ready until June, I wouldn't have left work early on 2 separate occasions, spent time and effort on filling out a 30 plus page application and submitting countless bank statements. I visit them between once and twice a week. I have seen many of the units in here, have eaten the food, met many of the people, rode in the elevators and can give a pretty good review of this place since I've seen other "old folks" homes. Most of the residents in Tower One are Jewish. Ever since HUD took over, the Jewish community within the towers is getting smaller with other groups moving in. While I'm sure it's a great place to live if you're Jewish like my family, I would feel like an outsider if I wasn't Jewish. Many of the units have been renovated. They look absolutely great and have been modernized. The older units are "old". They look like they are from the 70's. Either way, if you are living in Tower One, you have to get the meal plan which is six dinner meals per week except for Saturday because of the Sabbath. The food isn't half bad, but it is bland and people often complain about the food. There are several options. Over the past three years, I have noticed a significant decrease in the quality of the food in the dining hall. The food for breakfast and lunch is actually pretty good. (remember it is all kosher) The dinner is dairy free and the breakfast/lunch is meat free. The best part about living in Tower One / Tower East is the staff. From the administrators to the Security to the wait staff, they are all top notch. They know everyone's name in the entire building, so if you're not a regular or a resident, they will know instantly. If you live on certain floors, you need to purchase Utopia services which is like assisted living. There is a minimum charge, and extra hours can be purchased. The price to live here seems expensive, however when you break it down, it's actually not that bad. Units in Tower One which include the six meals run from $1300 for a studio to $2000 for a one bedroom. This is the total cost with everything included besides phone/cable.

This particular homemaker was found to be sleeping twice in the five Mondays she was there, and constantly on her phone. She wouldn't even sit in the same room as my grandfather because she was too busy playing on her phone and making phone calls. He often was never fed This past Monday she just never showed up. She did not even have the decency to call to let us know so we could make other arrangements. Also, The Agency on Aging never called us either to let us know that nobody was coming that day. So instead my 95 year old paralyzed grandfather was home alone from 7:30 until 12:00 until the next care taker came in. When we found this out (the next day!!) we called The Agency on Aging they fumbled around coming up with any excuse they could think of. This company is a disgrace, and if you are thinking of having them take care of anyone that you care about, you should definitely look elsewhere. Everyone from their management to the caretakers themselves are a joke!
