Miami Tropical Bonsai is a nursery that sells bonsai in the Redlands area of Homestead in Southwest Dade County. According to their website the nursery is owned by Alva Hayes. They have been in business since 1987 and are one of the largest bonsai companies in the United States. They create their own pottery and have over 30,000 trees in stock. I have always loved the bonsai trees at the Morikami Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach so when I passed this nursery I stopped to see what they had. They have a pond with a small waterfall and to the left of that was a large area with bonsai trees. Some of the trees are decades old and are of subtropical and tropical varieties. One small ficus tree was $600 and another tree was several thousand dollars. I guess Mr. Miyagi and Daniel were smart to try and open that bonsai shop in Karate Kid III. I did see more affordable trees on their website. There are a lot of different kinds of plant nurseries in this part of the Redlands and this is an interesting stop if you are in the area. The Redland Ranch is just right down the street and is also worth a stop. They serve food and smoothies in a tropical setting.

After reading great reviews, I decided to pay Richard Lyons Nursery a visit and was glad I did. The property is a little tricky to find and from the street doesn't look that big, but once you enter, you will see the outside looks are deceiving. This place is packed with all sorts of ornamentals, fruit trees and other types of plants. After choosing several plants and having the sales ticket written up, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that it was only $40. Had I gone to another place in Kendall or a major retailer, I would have paid much more. I will definitely be back for more.

We first discovered Lyons in our search for rare Atala butterflies to augment the population at our house... the folks at Montgomery botanical center had recently brought a population of Atala caterpillars to feed on Lyons sizable coontie selection. We were lucky to get a coontie with freshly laid eggs... that was in late September, and they emerged from their cocoons today (late October). They have a wonderful selection of butterfly larval and nectar plants. They have both local and exotic plants also including bamboo, heliconia, and more. When you arrive, park a short way in... a siren will announce your presence, and you'll soon be met by a guide in a golf cart. We've been four times so far, and each time we go we've discovered a new area, and new plants. As you wander around, make sure you look at the amazing mature specimens that dot the property.... such an amazing variety... it rivals a botanical garden!

Some of the nurseries have added food, animals, and attractions, so it is really fun to come out and explore here. Georgie's Paradise is located towards the end of the strip of nurseries. It is really huge and it looks like it goes on for a mile. I couldn't even walk back that far. Trees ornamental and fruit, plants full sun or shade, flowers. orchids, cactus, they have it all. At Georgie's you can get help directly from the owner, Sandra Sauma. The array of plants is really amazing. They also have a cute monkey theme throughout the nursery owing to Bella the capuchin monkey. There is a very nice monkey topiary over a koi pond. When it is time to spruce up your outdoor space come to Georgie's where you will find great service, selection, and prices.

The gentleman who attended us was so friendly, but more so, he was instructive and we even learned that a particular flower had chocolate smells coming from it in the morning. Also, we learned how some orchids got their unnatural color. Specifically the blue orchid I fell in love with. I'd probably have bought one, but everything I touch dies. I don't have a green thumb whatsoever. I would, however, happily buy one for a loved one should the occasion arise.

Maria Fernanda was the angel who helped me pick out the plants, she was very knowledgeable about which plans should go where depending on sunlight. She helped me design it too.
