HavAnnA Cafe was one of the few and it was well-rated on Yelp and so we took the short ride even further down the remote path to Chokoloskee, a small island town that juts out into the bay. HavAnnA Cafe is colorfully lit and was pleasant enough. Our food was fair at best. We tried the chicken and the mahi mahi. They both had the same salsa-like topping. The plantains weren't very good, they had a weird texture, and the black beans were pretty terrible. The white rice was the best thing on the plate. The fish was way over cooked and very thin. I would have thought that there'd be fresh fish options on the menu, I mean it is the Everglades and fisherman are everywhere and fish are in abundance, you know, Nature's bounty, but no. We seemed to witness one of the servers giving free food to a customer in exchange for a good Google rating and special mention of her.

There was no real sense of urgency, no meaningful effort to address my concern in the moment, and not even an offer of a discount or anything to make up for such a disgusting experience. I understand that problems can happen, but seeing that many roaches is a serious sanitation concern, and I expected a much more professional response. I was left feeling uncomfortable and disappointed, especially considering I was there as a paying customer. Management needs to take this seriously, thoroughly address the pest issue, and do better when customers bring concerns like this to their attention. Nobody should have to worry about roaches crawling out of the walls while trying to enjoy a meal. Based on what I personally experienced, I would not feel comfortable returning. The pina colada itself didn't seem like it was very strong, but it had good flavor and wasn't overly sweet. I also got a margarita from the happy hour menu, which was pretty strong and sweet. The shrimp were served cold with cocktail sauce. They were cooked nicely and not rubbery, but didn't have a ton of flavor. I'd definitely order other food from the menu, but we were heading to dinner soon after so I didn't want to fill up. The live music that was happening while we were there was pretty silly and kind of raunchy, but entertaining. I'm glad we got to experience this popular spot at an off-peak time.
