Locally owned little movie house. Good mix of commercial hits and indie movies.

I went there recently to see Atonement and they unfortunately had technical difficulties.

Flagship Premium Cinemas

I think this Flagship Cinema recently (maybe in the past year or so?) updated all their seats. They…read moreseem much cleaner, there's no tears or cracking in the thick material, all the buttons to recline actually work. I noticed it a while back; this place was definitely loved hard over the past decade plus, so it's nice to see these upgrades! This is still my go-to theater: 1) I like the ease of choosing my seat and ordering my ticket online ahead of time. We've never had an issue or glitch with this. We just show up, use the little machine to scan our barcode, and it's as easy as that. 2) I like the annual Premium Popcorn Pail deal (even if the bucket is 20% smaller than it used to be). We always trade ours in at the end of the year/beginning of the new year for some kind of genuinely decent promotional deal. On average, throughout the year of using it it seems it costs us anywhere between $11 and $17 to get it filled and get one large soda (that we could get unlimited refills on if we could be bothered to leave the theater). 3) The "luxury power recliners" themselves are, for me at least, bigger and more comfortable than some of the couches I've owned. I crawl into my seat, hit the button, up go my feet, back goes my upper half, and I'm immersed in a cloud of comfort (without annoying anyone the way this same action does on a plane). And they're SPACIOUS: I can have my jacket in my seat next to me, my purse, my food... and there's still room. 4) I like that they show old movies!!! TAKE MY MONEY, I want to see Jaws here every summer. 5) FREE movie on your birthday (all you need is your ID to prove it's your big day)! Admittedly, during really busy times, it could use some additional TLC: 1) The soda area can get quite wet and sticky. 2) The bathroom trash bins are often overflowing (and actually, I think that's on you, future customer. Can you please just kind of push your towel down into the bin instead of laying it on top of it?). 3) Why are the bathroom stalls SMALLER than airplane bathrooms? I'm a small person, and I still have to contort my body to close the door. Still, it's comfortable and (mostly) clean and the staff working here can be really charming and goofy and I love that because THAT'S what a movie theater staff should be.

This is our usual cinema for a reason! All of the theaters have huge, comfy reclining seats. We…read moreusually bring a blanket and wear sweatpants for an at home theater kind of experience! Very comfortable! If you buy a large plastic popcorn bucket for $17, you can get $6 refills for the rest of the year. Great thing about Falmouth is once you get your popcorn, you can add your own butter topping - as much or as little as you want. Drinks are self serve once you buy the cup and you get free refills. While the tickets, like most theaters nowadays, aren't cheap, flagship makes it hurt not so much.

I understand that this theater is sort of a labor of love and was in danger of being closed…read morerecently and whatnot, and that's all well and good, but with the condition the projector is in, they should NOT be charging people money to see movies here. Tonight's screening of The Dark Knight featured: - The lamp going dim at several points - The picture not being centered on the screen - The first reel prematurely ending after a period of dimness - Volume so low that we had to crane our necks to hear what the characters said - Out of focus picture - Very little contrast - The trailer reel wasn't shown - no Watchmen trailer! - Air conditioner so loud that it overpowered the already low sound Now, I would have been comfortable donating money to see the movie and feeling like I was doing a good deed for an ailing theater, but when you charge an admission to a movie there is, on the audience's part, an expectation of a certain experience - namely, being able to see and hear the movie. The only thing that kept us from walking out was the sheer awesomeness of the movie itself.

We went to this theater with some concerns after reading the two previous older reviews. We found…read morethat those reviews are no longer valid. The screen is not small, it's sized correctly for the size of the theater. The sound was also correct for the size of the theater, not like some of the mega theaters that think the people in the parking lot also have to hear it. It's a very nice small theater, only gave it a four stars as the seats are a little tight if you are a wide body but not intolerable.

Some things to know about this theater: 1. The matinee…read moreprices - including their "bargain day" - are more expensive than other cinemas in Greater Portland. 2. You could walk into this theater and never talk to or see an employee. I bought my ticket online, walked directly into the building, and freely to/from my screen without ever needing to show any proof that I had even bought a ticket. Which, like, as an introvert was amazing. But I'm pretty sure I could have stayed there all day bopping in and out of whatever movie I wanted (this was true for a midday, weekday screening, anyway). 3. The bathrooms here are not super clean, but they are super small. 4. If you're seeing a movie that's quieter, artsy, or dialogue-driven and the theater adjacent to yours is showing an action, adventure, or horror movie... that's the movie you're going to hear and experience. The bass absolutely overtakes everything. 5. It doesn't actually get that dark in these theaters. Because this cinema has stadium seating (where the seats go up platform by platform instead of going down a gradual slope), the safety lighting on the wall sort is sort of always in your periphery. I wouldn't not come here, I just wouldn't intentionally choose coming here.

We've gone to Apple Cinemas for years and they never have any of the "menu" items they heavily…read moreadvertise. Always a stupid excuse, too early, not enough employees to handle it. Today was their last chance and they blew it as usual. Do not go on an empty stomach. Bring a picnic lunch if you have to go there. Personally, I'm done with them!

Old Port

One of Portland's treasures, the Nick has been operating in the Old Port for over 40 years, and screens mainstream indie films as well as current blockbusters. Surrounded by the best restaurants and cafés Portland has to offer, it's super easy to park and combine a dinner and a movie. The garage next door is a sure thing if you're not into street parking, just know it's closed on Sundays. I probably see a dozen or so films a year at The Nick--I like to see all of the Academy Award nominated films, and this is the place to catch all of the best picture nominees. In the past few weeks I've seen I'm Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Brutalist at the Nick. A great experience every time--I've walked right up to buy tickets with only one party or two parties in line, at most. The selection concessions offered is reasonable, and includes vegan options. Seats are comfortable, however, they aren't the giant recliners offered at the big corporate cineplexes. Also, you can buy tickets in advance, but you are not able to reserve a particular seat. This is a old school sort of cinema, and yes, the bathrooms are upstairs. They are clean, and you can say hello to Audrey Hepburn on the large Breakfast at Tiffany's poster on your way down the stairs. People really seem to enjoy $6 ticket Tuesdays. Otherwise, tickets are $10 for a matinee and $13 for an evening ticket, less for children and seniors. The Nickelodeon is one of my favorite places in Portland, one of the few institutions that's managed to stand the test of time, and I hope it is able to stay around for another 40 plus years.

The building is very beautiful inside and parking is convenient since there's an attached garage…read more The staff is very friendly, too.
