When we asked…read morequestions about liability or International Drivers License we got a condescending attitude, eventually threats of security... Raphael threatened to cancel our reservation with his manager while we were on the phone with Expedia and laughing that he will do it first. He was shushing us with finger gestures and not letting us say anything, wouldn't give us his name, wouldn't let us talk to his manager.... was 100% unwilling to help or explain properly!!! We felt that we were discriminated against! We traveled by car all over Europe and not once did we get so much attitude and unprofessionalism!!! Ended up renting elsewhere after shopping around with two companies and both companies were absolutely amazing and helpful!!! Big mistake, SIXT!!! Your customer service or employee training SUCKS!!!

No such thing as normal wear and tear. Decline insurance and you will get a damage claim…read more I have rented with Sixt Spain two times now. First time was for 3 weeks and this past time was for 2 weeks. When I reserve the car I refuse CWD because my MasterCard covers damage and theft. This past rental I took out Tire and glass with 0€ liability. Tire and glass are typically not covered by your credit card. Each time I got to the counter, jet lagged and not fluent in Spanish the agent has tried to scare me into the CDW by telling me that my Mastercard would not cover theft and loss of use etc. CDW costs about 1/2 the price of the rental price and does not eliminate a deductible which is usually $1500. So with Sixt there is no agent to inspect the car with you when you drop it off and both times, without fail, I get an email stating that Sixt found a scratch and I needed to pay for it. The first time my CC coveted it ($160) minus the $35 fee that Sixt charges. This last time Sixt says I scratched a wheel. Seriously, isn't this normal wear and tear? But, I bought tire insurance correct? In Spain tire also means wheel in the definition. Well even though I paid for it the agent had me initial the contract that I was declining all insurance, including tire and glass. So I had paid for it, it was listed on my confirmation, but declined in Spanish on my contract. After a few back and forth emails, btw save ALL your paperwork, Sixt dropped the claim. I firmly believe that with Sixt, if you decline their super CDW they WILL find a scratch or ding and come after you with a claim. Now maybe Hertz and Avis are as ruthless but dealing with a US company when living in the US is a lot easier. I have never had this happen except with Sixt and I have rented a LOT of cars.

I had a terrible experience with Avis/Budget at Madrid Airport - avoid them like toxic water…read more I pre-paid for a 1-week SUV rental, directly from Budget's website. At the counter, I was given a different agreement with about 40% higher fees than what I pre-paid. It included all kinds of apparently made-up fees (airport, service, etc.) Things got even worst when I returned the car, full-tank and 1/2 hr early. I was asked to leave it and get my receipt via email, which is common returning a car in the US, so that's what I did. My receipt never came, but my credit card was charged an additional $120. Budget/US who I called informed me the charge was for returning the car 1hr late with not full tank. I then got an email from Budget/Madrid, asking for a gas-station receipt and for my Boarding Pass - guess what: I had kept both, and send copies. 2 months later, no response/refund from Madrid. To be fair to Budget/US, they finally stepped in and refunded the charges. Bottom line: stay away from this dishonest outfit in Madrid, and keep your gas receipts and Boarding Passes.

After which you are directed a few blocks down the street to an underground parking structure to c check in at another counter and get your vehicle. Everything was smooth however DO NOT EXPECT TO GET THE CAR YOU RESERVED. We had opted for a standard or small car but ended up with a Mercedes 9 passenger Van. Do not have high expectation to receive the vehicle you reserved and you will not be disappointed. Both clerks at the counter were very nice, polite and professional.

Then came the usual damage check: You get a list of documented damages and you have to check the car for new damages and have them added to the list. Now the car is parked in a dark parking house (at this office), so unless you have a flashlight, you won't be able to see new scratches, dents etc. The Sixt employee also falsely said that new damages should be reported to "our colleague in the parking house" who, turned out, doesn't even work for Sixt (because it's a normal parking house used by everyone). So back to the Sixt office to get official staff to document the unreported damages we found on the car. We found several, but the Sixt employee was reluctant to add a few of those to the damage report, although they were all larger than the reported ones on the list. After this hassle, we finally drove the car out of the premises. On return, we encountered a different employee who did the damage check with us. This one was more pleasant and basically just went around the car, checked off stuff from the damage list and said "everything fine and okay".

That means a high Euro deductible and no real personal theft coverage. A GPS and putting Gayle on as the second driver were also extra. I declined all the extras, although in hindsight I would have changed my mind on the GPS. Also extra (of course) was gasoline and various Toll Roads/Tunnels that popped up here and there during our journeys. Europcar rented us a VW Golf, which had plenty of personal and luggage room, had good pep and acceleration, scored good gas mileage, and made driving a stick enjoyable again. The only time I was concerned about traffic was in the commercial areas of Andorra, although Gayle was sure that I was going to drive the car off the road in on narrow section above Pal in the Mountains. Our biggest complaint over the entire trip was that the CD Player didn't work. We brought music to pass the time (including our favourite - The Crazy Heart Soundtrack). Short of that, we occasionally listened to trashy Euro-Pop, got on each others nerves more when trying to navigate, but otherwise enjoyed each others company and conversation. We picked up the car at Atocha Station in Madrid. The Rental Desk is upstairs and it took awhile to figure out how to find where the car was on the level below and farther back. The folks here were cordial, but not particularly helpful in getting us on our way. Yet once we got in and the guy moved the vehicle that was blocking us, we were pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it was to get out of Town. I also appreciated the thorough pre-inspection they did, which identified every scratch and dent on this car. I figured from the description, that anything short of significant fender bender would go unnoticed when we returned the car. Luckily, we returned the car in better shape than we found it.

We ended up paying twice as much and got a car that had 100 liters less cargo space than the one I reserved! And the car itself was atrocious. The list of dings and scratches had 46 items on it. 46!!! There was no way to verify all of them without delaying our trip for an hour. The result was that we got charged for damage that was almost certainly already there--a ding that caused a small piece to break off when all we did was close the tailgate! Ridiculous! The whole experience felt like Rent-a-Wreck. Never again will I deal with this company. NEVER.
