I had a terrible experience with Avis/Budget at Madrid Airport - avoid them like toxic water…read more I pre-paid for a 1-week SUV rental, directly from Budget's website. At the counter, I was given a different agreement with about 40% higher fees than what I pre-paid. It included all kinds of apparently made-up fees (airport, service, etc.) Things got even worst when I returned the car, full-tank and 1/2 hr early. I was asked to leave it and get my receipt via email, which is common returning a car in the US, so that's what I did. My receipt never came, but my credit card was charged an additional $120. Budget/US who I called informed me the charge was for returning the car 1hr late with not full tank. I then got an email from Budget/Madrid, asking for a gas-station receipt and for my Boarding Pass - guess what: I had kept both, and send copies. 2 months later, no response/refund from Madrid. To be fair to Budget/US, they finally stepped in and refunded the charges. Bottom line: stay away from this dishonest outfit in Madrid, and keep your gas receipts and Boarding Passes.

After which you are directed a few blocks down the street to an underground parking structure to c check in at another counter and get your vehicle. Everything was smooth however DO NOT EXPECT TO GET THE CAR YOU RESERVED. We had opted for a standard or small car but ended up with a Mercedes 9 passenger Van. Do not have high expectation to receive the vehicle you reserved and you will not be disappointed. Both clerks at the counter were very nice, polite and professional.

Gayle and I rented a car in Spain for 9 days. We arranged the Reservation through Auto Europe and…read morepaid slightly less than $50 per day, which included basic and comprehensive insurance. That means a high Euro deductible and no real personal theft coverage. A GPS and putting Gayle on as the second driver were also extra. I declined all the extras, although in hindsight I would have changed my mind on the GPS. Also extra (of course) was gasoline and various Toll Roads/Tunnels that popped up here and there during our journeys. Europcar rented us a VW Golf, which had plenty of personal and luggage room, had good pep and acceleration, scored good gas mileage, and made driving a stick enjoyable again. The only time I was concerned about traffic was in the commercial areas of Andorra, although Gayle was sure that I was going to drive the car off the road in on narrow section above Pal in the Mountains. Our biggest complaint over the entire trip was that the CD Player didn't work. We brought music to pass the time (including our favourite - The Crazy Heart Soundtrack). Short of that, we occasionally listened to trashy Euro-Pop, got on each others nerves more when trying to navigate, but otherwise enjoyed each others company and conversation. We picked up the car at Atocha Station in Madrid. The Rental Desk is upstairs and it took awhile to figure out how to find where the car was on the level below and farther back. The folks here were cordial, but not particularly helpful in getting us on our way. Yet once we got in and the guy moved the vehicle that was blocking us, we were pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it was to get out of Town. I also appreciated the thorough pre-inspection they did, which identified every scratch and dent on this car. I figured from the description, that anything short of significant fender bender would go unnoticed when we returned the car. Luckily, we returned the car in better shape than we found it.

We ended up paying twice as much and got a car that had 100 liters less cargo space than the one I reserved! And the car itself was atrocious. The list of dings and scratches had 46 items on it. 46!!! There was no way to verify all of them without delaying our trip for an hour. The result was that we got charged for damage that was almost certainly already there--a ding that caused a small piece to break off when all we did was close the tailgate! Ridiculous! The whole experience felt like Rent-a-Wreck. Never again will I deal with this company. NEVER.

This review is about Hertz but the problem I am speaking to is entirely an online one not specific…read moreto any Hertz location. I rented a car in Salamanca, Spain and got a speeding ticket. Afterwards I was notified by a Hertz email that I could pay the ticket online for a reduced fee, but only within 72 hours after being notified. I tried to pay the fine online twice but was blocked both times. I called Hertz. It gave me a Hertz email address to contact to address the problem. I emailed it twice, but the emails were bounced as undeliverable. I told Hertz, but it could not explain why the address didn't work, even though it was a Hertz address. After several emails to Hertz customer service, to which I attached all the relevant documentation, e.g., the ticket, the car rental receipt, screenshots of the blocking of my payment, Hertz told me to email the same address again that I already knew and could prove did not work, without explaining why or what purpose that would serve. The 72 hours expired and I still have not paid the ticket because I have not been able to get around this technical problem, which by all indications is Hertz's responsibility. I was just informed by email that the ticket would be forwarded to an unknown "agency sanction issuer", presumably in Spain, that would then send me a notice to pay the fine, presumably (this is not clear yet) at the higher rate, which would require me to pay approximately 40 additional Euros. So, it looks like I will be mulcted for gratuitous money I should not have to pay, the illegitimacy of which I will most likely, in reality, be unable to resist unless I want a black mark on my driving record that shouldn't be there, or unless I can figure out with massively more expenditure of time and effort what legal procedure, if any, may exist to vindicate my right to pay at the promised lesser rate - and then go through that procedure (How many more emails? How many more fees for miscellaneous items and filings? How many more procedural irregularities and idiosyncrasies?). Even if it turns out that I only have to pay the fine at the lesser rate (this is highly unlikely), this review is still not premature: my time and energy has already been dearly wasted simply trying to communicate with someone who could handle the most basic troubleshooting. It is beyond inexplicable how and why Hertz could not figure this out, and how and why it would continue to give me a dysfunctional email address, after being informed that the address doesn't work, without a viable alternative. These are the little experiences of corporate and administrative tyranny that accumulate piecemeal and eventually, in conjunction with other larger injustices, result in the kind of society-wide rage that is destabilizing the whole world.
