Renting a car in a foreign country is nothing short of an adventure- I'd say renting in Italy is one of the most time consuming of all. From begging the rental clerks to do an inspection of the vehicle exterior to ensure they don't try to blame you for existing dings and scratches to returning the car, it can literally take hours! The wait isn't really the issue though. To avoid lengthy times and additional confusion do come prepared with your documents and definitely reserve your car online in advance and always go directly through the rental agency, not a third party website, but this applies to any and all rental agencies you're looking to rent from. Two stars for charging us for an empty tank of gas for our stolen vehicle. Yep- our car was stolen just outside of Bari and they did of the courtesy of charging us for a full tank of gas plus a late fee for a car that we clearly were not going to return. Is their fault the car was stolen? No. But their customer service is completely lacking. It's took us two hours in line to give back the car keys,
