For today, I only had time for a chai to go. The owner gave me a sambusa pastry to take with me. Very good savory lentil pastry. Has a bit of spice to it adding to the flavors. I had been wanting to try Ethiopian food for a long time and this was a great introduction! I had the Sambusa and black sesame biscuit with a cup of their signature coffee. Coffee was strong, hot and bold just as expected. The whole experience was so nice and the lady working helped me choose a great combination. OMG this place is AMAZING! I always the sambusa and it is homemade by the wife, I usually see her when I go. They are spicy and delicious! Last time I went she gave me this savory doughnut that was super crispy in the outside but sooooo soft and flavorful on the inside! they are family owned and I just can't recommend this place enough. Ethio Coffee House is a super friendly, local Ethiopian cafe offering seriously good coffee, pastries, and Ethiopian breakfast too! We ordered the ground beef stir-fried with eggs and tomatoes, as well as the special ful, a dish of small fava beans cooked with eggs, ginger, and garlic, and topped with chopped jalapeños and red onions. Both of these dishes were served in a mini skillet, along with two warm, whole wheat oblong rolls, which had a soft, chewy, nutty interior and a crispy, crusty exterior. I know the difference between an independent and a chain and I prefer to support the local independents, especially when they have a product worth talking about and sharing! And good coffee! I can't say enough great things about this coffee shop. The owner is truly special and kind; you feel like family when you're there. The biggest brag on this Ethiopian coffee shop is the coffee and the fresh baked goods. The seasoned lentils in crispy flaky though were my favorite, they come in regular and spicy. Wi-Fi is super fast, I came here in an emergency when my work from home Wi-Fi was suddenly cut off. Definitely recommend! read more

What a lovely little coffee shop! I was intrigued to find this in Nashville, but I'm happy I got to try it while I'm back for the holidays! When I first stepped in, I was greeted by two people! It was such a warm, welcoming environment with the background noise of tv and Ethiopian music. I loved that it was a place where children, students, and friends catching up were meeting! I ordered the small tea with milk and baklava. The tea was around $2 and the baklava was maybe $2.50? The total was less than $5. I was surprised that the tea came out with frothed milk and was a bit like a cappuccino! The baklava portion was generous and not too sweet! It was the perfect texture with ooey gooey honey and nuts. My friend and I caught up for 2 hours here, and I loved that we were served and paid after we were done. I thought it was nice and liked seeing that lots of Ethiopian locals come here- check it out! read more

Very delicious coffee's, roasted on the premises, and lots of other way luscious looking and tasting coffee, and fruit drinks. The Ethiopian breakfast treats are delicious too. The smell of roasting coffee beans or occasional incense adds an olfactory delight to complete the experience. One more thing. The service is impeccable, and the owner, who bakes everything!! You drive right by it and never know what you're missing but trust me, you really want to visit this terrific cafe. The owners are so kind, the coffee is excellent and always a soccer game or news going with happy regulars gathered round. The big donut or "bombolino" is strangely addictive: just barely sweet, always warm and fresh. Coffee is roasted in house by hand each morning. I would have never found this place if not for a coworker, who is from Ethiopia. She told me this place is special to her and now I know why. At the time I went I was the only person in the coffee shop speaking English, which made for an amazing experience. I asked the barista what did she suggest and she suggested the Sprice, which is tea with coffee. Honestly had I not read what it was I would know how to describe this drink. There are hints of tea and coffee but neither is distinct in the drink. It is so harmonious especially once you add in the spices they use. Perfect! Great service. I love the deep richness of the coffee here. They have smoothies, and juices.a lot of mango and pineapple. I got a papaya smoothie, and it was fantastic. They have several different teas including moringa which I thought was really unique, and awesome. They have some breakfast items that sound really good. I stopped by Ethio for a coffee this morning when I was running some errands in the area. I got mine to go, but I wish that I'd had time to sit and enjoy my coffee in because Ethio has such a warm, welcoming vibe and a neighborhood/community feel. This place definitely deserves some more business. It's authentic Ethiopian (sambusa or ful anyone?) and that's DEFINITELY a good thing. This is the type of place I'd expect to find in NYC... it's thrilling to see Nashville sport that sort of variety. I had a pure avocado smoothie, and the barista/chef recommended I squeeze fresh lime on it, which completed the flavor profile perfectly. Not too bitter, not too sweet. The actual coffee is rich and dark, as I'd expect from Ethiopian, Turkish, and other eastern beans. Now I have another reason to visit East Nashville! read more

Came her with a friend to get tea and a snack and was pleasantly surprised. The interior is cute and the owner is so friendly. He fresh grinds the beans for coffee in front of you. My friend and I both had sprice - a tea/coffee mixture- and it was delicious. I also had a samosa, it was so good, full of flavor and just the right amount of heat. They've definitely renovated/changed ownership. This shop is located by my old barber and I'd been in the space before. It didn't look like this. Kudos to making the store/space something inviting, bright and attractive. And that's one of the first things you notice about Ethio: it's very appealing. The shop is adorned with many cute (it really is the best word to use) tables. These aren't work desks; don't come here expecting to spread out and tickety-tackety all day long. These are cafe tables in the truest sense of the word, meant to promote conversation and close talking. Or, if you come here solo, they allow you to set your coffee down while you read a book/do a crossword puzzle.* There's a back room that's a bit larger if you're coming in with a group. There's also a TV tuned to a news channel if you find yourself unable to break away from the information overload in which we find ourselves. Finally, there's a small display that reminds you you're in an Ethiopian coffee shop. It's bright, colorful and promotes conversation. The counter is the only thing I remember about the old shop. The main counter has some snacks and a large billboard above it. Take some time to peruse the options. Also take some time to check out the smaller counter. It's the one that houses all the baked goods. Unfortunately for me, they're made with wheat flour but they looked delectable. Judging from my colleague's happy grunts, I think they taste pretty good as well. As I am wont to do these days, I stuck with liquid satisfaction. I tend to enjoy Ethiopian coffee but I decided to try the spice tea. I enjoyed it but it was very strong. I didn't pick up a bunch of clove/cardamom notes like in other spice teas. This was more of a rich, black tea. It was described as having coffee notes and I'd definitely agree with that. Next time I'll have to inquire about their syrups. Ethio's wifi signal is strong and the space is extremely comfortable. You can tell that the owner(s) spent time and money to come up with a concept that was true to the (original) clientele, authentic to the culture and inviting to outsiders (from both). It's a hard tightrope to walk but I think they accomplished to goal admirably. Ethio is both a neighborhood shop and one to spend some time in if anywhere near the area. We needed a quick bite and coffee before getting tattoos at Alchemy up the street and got very lucky when we stumbled upon this place. The sambusa was unbelievably delicious, the coffee was perfect, and the woman who took our order radiated kindness. We wish we could have stayed longer and ordered more things. This was my first experience with Ethiopian coffee and Ethiopian food. I could not have asked for a better place to start. The service was absolutely excellent. The food was amazing. The coffee was better than any I have ever tried. I'm going to take my wife there tomorrow to experience the food and atmosphere and coffee...and then will go next-door to AH Merkato and increase my supply of Ethiopian staples. Like the others, I noticed that a lot of cab drivers came in and out...and to a person even they made it a point to say hello to me or speak with me. The sense of warmth and welcome is beyond anything I have ever known. The owner even sat down and talked to me between customers. I have to drive two hours to get there...and it is absolutely worth it...not just the food and the coffee, but the people as well. This place deserves a visit. read more

Ok, YELP and Google need to stop following me, but I really enjoyed this spot. I worked there for a while before a friend joined me and the staff was very welcoming and told me not to rush. I had the Normal Ful for breakfast, which is a vegetarian lentil dish. it was hot and full of flavor, it just wasn't sweet, which is a truly American expectation even though there was NO reason it should have been sweet since it's beans and veggies. The thing that looked like a donut was not sweet either, and really fluffily mouth-watering so it might be good to experience for sugar-addicted Americans like me. The wheat rolls are INCREDIBLE, from whatever mysterious source they come. I'd love to go back and just chill with my laptop and try other items that are new to me. The customers are primarily men, which seems to be cultural based on my whole 2 Ethiopian coffee shop experiences, and a few restaurants in DC, but a woman was staffing and women did come in.
