In case you are wondering, Spax Gezondheidswinkel translates to: "Spax Health Store" but also seems…read moreto also translate to "Spax Vitamin Shop". A quality vitamin, supplement and holistic shop in the Da Costabuurt - Oud-West area. A wonderful store with a LOT of inventory. I presume it's the owner who is in the store 6 days a week since I've lived here. He is a very knowledgeable man and is on top of anything you ask. I find everything I need here. A lot of products from the USA too. BOOM! And if you think the price is higher than online because it's a speciality shop, you're wrong, his prices are very competitive with what I've found online or the quality of the product is much more pure or higher-end. The big plus about Spax is they are open after 18:00 on weekdays. Such a bonus. They also have incense, oils, soap and organic supplements. I'm very grateful for Spax on the Bilderdijkstraat!

Apart from vitamins, the shop also sells lots of natural, eco-friendly toothpaste, mouthwash, soaps, shampoos and hair color. There is also a big Aromatherapy section. Conveniently, the shop is also open on the first & last Sunday of the month. Great selection, excellent customer service by Rob, and good prices - I'm a fan and highly recommend! Yelp 41/ 2019

Alright. Phhooooooo....okay…read more I'm a stuck-up, super-spoiled, vegetarian-mega-brat. Why? I come from Los Angeles where if you want a macrobiotic, vegan, raw, super-green slice of ANYTHING, we've got it. It's pretty much amazeballs. Really. We do it up in California without any pretentious vibes at all. We're just super stoked to be healthy and that's that. Oh, we also like options. So, when I heard about Unlimited Health yesterday from my holistic masseuse (Massage Marin - I've reviewed her, she's ridiculously great), I was so pumped. Their website looks stellar - they have a cafe+juice bar+restaurant. Yoga and detox center, too, but I'm not a stretchy kind of gal. So, I grabbed a friend this morning, hopped on our bikes and rode over there, so elated for the insta-health we'd find here. The setting is bland. No music. Feels like a cold cafeteria in a hospital. Granted, it was only around 11:30am, so maybe the older women working there just don't know ambiance is a 24-7 kinda thing? Not sure. Anyway... The grocery store. It has a small, but neat assortment of raw snacks. An okay assortment of supplements. Water bottles. Green powders. Skin care. Okay, good. So, there's stuff I can buy to feel awesome. Oh, but wait. 10euros for 300 grams of a raw cereal? You're, like, kidding right? Right? 40euros for a small green powder. Um, you are SO funny, store! What a crackup. Right? Right? Bottom line: the concept is ok. However, you're getting ripped off. The same products in the US go for half the price. Maybe more. It's nice to have a small grocer with even more upscale raw/vegan, etc. products...but come on. Is the wallet-raping necessary? I left with some kale chips and a shot of wheatgrass. I'll go back. For Liquid Aminos. After my paycheck. ;)

Are cookies the first thing you think about when you think of an organic grocery store? No? Not for…read moreme either, until I was shopping at de bio specialist. Sure, they may not want to be known for their cookies, but OMG, their cookies are amazing. I'm talking about the ones near the register. They had some samples out, the husband and I tried a piece, and we ended up buying two. Chewy, amazing, oatmeal raisin cookies. For that alone, go here! Now, beyond cookies, this is an organic shop that is really top notch. They pack a lot into a little store, and I don't have trouble finding things. It's like they actually think about it and designed the store for ease of use (novel concept, I know!). The brands they stock here are fantastic. They sell about 6 types of lentils, a great selection of fresh produce (some interesting, non-traditional veggies, too!), herbs, spices, almond milk, snacks to go, bread, coconut milk and what seems like almost every type of 'super food' out there. Need nuts, goji berries, red quinoa, black quinoa, white chia seeds? Look no further. If you want it and its organic I bet this place has it. And that is a lot more than I can say for some of the bigger shops like Marqt or Eko Plaza. And....that is not all.....wait for it....wait for it...wait for it.....They are open late. What?! Open late? Like, how late? Like past 9pm on a weekday late? Yes. Yes, you heard me. This store is open late enough for you to go to work, go to the gym and then go grocery shopping. That is a minor miracle in Amsterdam. Also, the people that work here are really friendly. All in all, a very good addition to the 'hood. And they are open late!
