If your one of those people with many allergies, or just want to eat healthy while your on vacation, then I would suggest doing your grocery shopping at Natuur Winkel. There are "health food" stores all over called "Natuur Winkle" and most of the regular super markets such as Albert Heijn, also sell plenty of Gluten-free items. Everything in the shop is for sale, including tables and chairs. There is a kinderhoek for the children. This is a must - not only for the gluten-free set - but for those that are interested in good food, great household items, good stuff to take to eat. One of my favorite things to do in a new town or city is check out the local grocery store/supermarket, and this one, THIS ONE, with actual real-live vegan options, is like a dream. Granted, I don't know how to read Dutch, so most of the ingredients were a mystery to me, but I've gotten pretty familiar at spotting the Dutch words for 'milk' 'egg' and 'cheese', so I felt fairly confident. I also have a Rotterdam-born friend with me for last-ditch translation if needed. The variety of foods was overwhelming, in the best possible way! I found an excellent vegan mayonnaise (the mayo was for a potato salad, which turned out excellent and impressed all the picnic-going omnivores), bought a round of Cheesley Mozzarella, and picked up a tiny package of vegan bratwurst, just for fun. I was sorely tempted by the rest of the refrigerated section and naturally by the chocolate aisle--so many amazing looking vegan chocolate bars, including a white chocolate. Whaaaaat?! I would shop here quite frequently if I lived here. A great selection of organic food with a healthy vegan section. If you're traveling through, this is a great store to stock up on a few special vegan treats, and there's vegan/vegetarian cafe right next door if you're hungry.

A quality vitamin, supplement and holistic shop in the Da Costabuurt - Oud-West area. A wonderful store with a LOT of inventory. I presume it's the owner who is in the store 6 days a week since I've lived here. He is a very knowledgeable man and is on top of anything you ask. I find everything I need here. A lot of products from the USA too. BOOM! And if you think the price is higher than online because it's a speciality shop, you're wrong, his prices are very competitive with what I've found online or the quality of the product is much more pure or higher-end. The big plus about Spax is they are open after 18:00 on weekdays. Such a bonus. They also have incense, oils, soap and organic supplements. I'm very grateful for Spax on the Bilderdijkstraat!
