I have to say my experience in part was negative because it was a Halloween children's costume walk day on the main street so there was loud music playing in the store along with children coming and getting candy the whole time. However, the main problem was with the salesman who didn't seem to understand my questions and when he finally seemed to understand that I was asking about the angle, the adjustable beds could move to said that they all moved to the same angle, even though it was obvious to the naked eye that they didn't. He didn't seem to know his products. read more

Great experience! They made it super chill! Great selection and customer service. We had to wait for our bed to Come in from shipment but it's perfect and a great crew came to assemble at our house. read more

Exploring downtown San Rafael for the first time, we happen to come across this place. What timing! We recently moved and are looking for a new bed. We pop hoping to get a sale because it looks like they are moving soon - soon as in a few weeks according to the lady that helped us. She was very kind and took the time to show us around. She showed us the difference between a King vs a Cal King which was something we had been curious about. It's pretty much longer vs wider. But as a visual and tactile learner, I appreciated being able to see and lay down on the two to check them out. They were selling off their floor samples before the move which are at a great deal but we wanted to look around a bit more before committing. Got her card and made sure to note where they are moving to. They had some great deals like free delivery, which includes even Oakland (East Bay). If you are ever in town and are in need of a new bed like we are, check them out. read more

I am glad to see so many 5 star reviews for Essential Sleep. A good friend told me of her great experience here, and I have to agree, I also had a great experience. Chip and Diane are that perfect combo of chill, plus, ready to help. They have a deep knowledge of the latex bedding field. My transaction was effortless, the bed come on time, and the communication was always friendly and helpful. I love my new bed every single night. read more

I had a great experience purchasing a new mattress from Essential Sleep. I bought a Naturepedic Halcyon organic mattress and it is the most comfortable organic mattress I have owned. This is my fourth organic mattress and as a side sleeper, I never found the other brands to be comfortable; always too firm for me. This particular model of Naturepedic is only sold through brick and mortar stores, not available online. Well worth the (high) price as it is incredibly comfortable. read more

Chip and Diane are great folks. They give you a much needed family feel that standard corporate bedding stores just don't give you. You won't feel like a # at Essential Sleep. They'll take care of you from start to finish. Purchased the Naturepedic EOS bed....had it for 2 weeks. Best bed I've ever had. Sleeping on a cloud....no more numb shoulder. No more hot sleeping like on memory foam. Great purchase and super satisfied. When you need a new bed, go down to Essential Sleep! read more

I am enjoying the mattress I purchased - about two years ago! I have had good dreams, comfort and good sleep. This store helped me pick well....and I am enjoying even the trip back to ESSENTIAL SLEEP for sheets, and more to enhance the experience. Chip and Diane, and their staff always are there to help. Thankful I don't have to go to the big chain stores because here I find cozy at home help. read more

Yesterday Essential Sleep delivered a Berkeley Ergonomics Nordic mattress to replace the comparable mattress from 2005. My experience with this business was great from start to finish. Diane, the co-owner, helped me select the mattress that was closest to the one that we replaced. She informed me that Essential Sleep would recycle the old mattress, which was a plus for me. On the day of delivery, Chip, the other co-owner, kept me informed about when the delivery staff would arrive. My goals of buying a quality mattress, supporting a local business, and disposing of the old mattress in a sustainable way all made Essential Sleep the right choice for me. read more

My wife and I are SO HAPPY that we found Diane and Chip's Essential Sleep! With the billion or so mattress shops screaming for business with their cheap, chemical laced options blaring on the radio, we didn't know we had a choice. Then we stumbled in to Essential Sleep and had what we imagine is a life changing experience. Diane took her time explaining the benefits of all the different brands and styles, and, of course, let us take our time relaxing on each one. We ended up with the Italian Magniflex. More comfortable than the Tempupedic's that we tried, and made with certified Organic Cotton and OEKO Tex environmentally certified. We are sleeping 8 hours a night, it's pretty comforting knowing that we are no longer sleeping on a pile of chemicals! More than anything, we are happy we bought from a local, family owned shop. Do yourself a favor and at least check it out before you buy!! read more

Love my bed! What originally drew me to visiting Essential Sleep was that they offered non-toxic (i.e. non-offgassing) options. The owners, Diane and Chip were both in the store at the time and were so kind (and low-pressure -no 'car salesmen' vibes at this family business) and informative about all the various options they carry. I ended up falling in love with a Chattam & Wells latex-coil bed. It's a brand I've heard of before but didn't realize they had a natural/eco-friendly line of beds, as I've only seen them in more conventional mattress stores. Bonus, Chattam & Wells beds are made in the US! I've been sleeping on my bed for about 7 months now (so it's fully 'broken in') and am still so happy with my choice. My bed feels so luxurious it's a literal dream ;) read more

My wife and I found Essential Sleep while shopping for a new mattress last month. We almost bought a mattress from nearby Mattress Firm, but what we thought was a good mattress for us was out of stock. Luckily we kept looking around San Rafael for alternative stores, and after reading the terrific Yelp reviews for Essential Sleep we felt compelled to stop by. The store co-owner, Diane, spent about 30 minutes showing us our options and was very easy to work with - no pressure sales at all, just lots of helpful information. We stayed in the store at least another 30 minutes and got to know Diane more (she's SO nice!). We didn't buy that day, but did a little more research online (mattressunderground.com is a great website that was recommended to us by Diane's husband). We learned that buying a USA made product that avoids using adhesives and chemicals was the right choice for us. We considered buying a Berkeley Ergonomics mattress but decided on a NaturePedic EOS. Both companies are great. We spent more than what we had planned on when initially looking for a mattress, but we're so happy we did. The NaturePedic EOS was shipped directly to our home from the factory in Ohio, and it took at most an hour to set up the mattress ourselves (if you're not familiar with this product it comes in three components - the encasement, the coil support, and the comfort layer). It's a unique mattress design and well worth checking out. The natural/organic materials have zero off-gassing, unlike the mattresses from the big box stores. We are happy we selected the NaturePedic EOS, and even more delighted that we made our purchase at Essential Sleep because the best part of our shopping experience was meeting Diane and her husband Chip. No need to go anywhere else, buy your mattress from these great people! read more

I had a wonderful experience working with Chip and Diane. Chip helped me choose the right mattress (a Naturepedic) for my sleep style and was patient, listened well, and really helpful with his suggestions. When we hit a slight snag in the removal of my old mattress, Chip went all out and personally hauled away my old mattress and box spring so it wouldn't block my driveway overnight. I really appreciated his extra attention and care. THAT's real customer service. I highly recommend Essential Sleep and am already recommending Chip and Diane to my friends and clients! read more

I had the most wonderful buying experience this morning. We unexpectedly needed 2 twin beds, bases, sheets, and mattress pads in a big hurry. I highly recommend Essential Sleep. read more

A good nights sleep, one of the most important things in my life. After a long day of whatever it is that made my back ache so much.... I can't wait to crawl into bed- and melt into the comfort I deserve! Well, after much research, I finally got to actually try the various non toxic - organic mattresses I had heard and read about. Did I mention I also have allergies? So when I found ESSENTIAL SLEEP, I was so pleased to find the chance to try all the various beds, pillows, and more in such a comfortable environment. Mostly what did it for me was the knowledgable staff at ESSENTIAL SLEEP. It wasn't about selling me something- it was about guiding me to the best choice for my needs. This staff is great. The choices are top of the line at reasonable prices ( that won't make you lose sleep!) and the confidence I have in this store inspires me to write this and recommend it highly. I have recently been working with Essential Sleep to find a non-toxic mattress. The mattress that I selected is not working out. So far I have not found the right one for me. However Diane and Chip have been great through this entire process and have been working hard with me to find the right mattress even if it's not at their store. They have affably agreed to refund me for the mattress if we cannot find one that works for me. I feel like Diane and I have become good friends throughout this process. And though I have not found a mattress that I like in the store right now Diane and Chip have been graciously helping me find what I need. If I do find a mattress that I like that can be ordered I will order it through them. Both Diane and Chip are knowledgeable, experienced and their customer service has been great! read more

Happened to be visiting friends in the area, the beautiful storefront and the beds looked so peaceful, I had to take a look inside. I was greeted by Diane, she showed me around and before you know it I was on a mattress that she had suggested. All I could say was... this bed is heavenly and I have to have it!!! She said she could ship it and I said where do I sign. The quality of the mattress sold itself. Diane is sweet and knowledgable and always has a smile on her face... She must be sleeping on one of these mattresses!!! Very happy with the service . Diane, Thank you for making it all happen. Now I have my dream bed zzzzzz OMG had to update... My husband and I have been looking for a new mattress since we have been experiencing comfort problems with our current one. We wanted something more natural than what we were seeing because we didn't want that horrible smell that came with our current mattress. So I began looking into something that was more natural or organic. I usually prefer a coil type bed but when we started looking into natural and organic we weren't sure what we would prefer. We wanted to try a few types of mattresses before committing to one but that was proving difficult as we could not find a store that had various options under one roof. So I began my search online and found Essential Sleep Boutique. So my husband and I headed over to Essential Sleep Boutique in San Rafael as they offered natural memory foam, coil and latex beds and even organic beds. Suprised with the selection, we decided on a Naturepedic. What I like the most about it besides it being organic is each side can be customized to meet our comfort needs. (My husband prefers his side firmer) Diane spent a lot of time with us, changing the layers from soft coils to firm coils and all the different options for the comfort layers on top. We spent hours there and she was gracious the whole time and didn't rush us one bit. Happy that we both got what we wanted and did not have to settle or compromise in between firmness. We had an excellent experience. Great service, great atmosphere, good selection and no pressure. I highly recommend this place. A real one stop shop for quality natural & organic beds. read more

Finally a company standing behind their product and manufacturing the best beds yet. I can say that since we are on our eighth bed after searching for a bed that would stop causing us to wake up with awful back pain. The last two nights have been heaven. I feel as if I'm on vacation! We bought their Encore brand and it's absolute heaven to sleep two nights In a row and getting the best night sleep, in our own bed, in years. This company really understands your needs!! read more

Was so pleased when my new mattress arrived delivered personally by the owners. Especially when we are at opposite ends of the state. I recently purchased a bed from Essential Sleep after visiting several other natural mattress stores nearby. . . gotta love Marin and the fact that we've got an abundance of options in this category all within walking distance! That actually proved extremely helpful since I could very quickly get a feel for the quality of service that I'd be getting, which as it turns out is really important where buying a bed is concerned. And that's the main thing I want to highlight in this review. AMAZING, ATTENTIVE SERVICE! I had interactions with Peter, Diane and Chris in-person, by phone and via email and the whole team was simply wonderful. They helped me find the products that match my needs, worked with my budget, even threw in some very attractive extras that certainly helped to sweeten the deal. They were very accommodating of my tricky schedule when it came to delivery, and most of all, it was a very easy process. As for my bed and pillows, while I know it's recommended to wait a month before really passing judgement, less than a week in I'm pretty delighted. My Encore Patriarch mattress and the Z pillows are all incredibly comfortable, soft with the right amount of support. I'm sleeping deeply and feel really luxurious in my beautiful new bed, thanks in no small part to Essential Sleep! And I feel confident that if I should come to have a different opinion in a few weeks time, the team will work with me just as well to help me find the solution I need. Thank you, Essential Sleep! read more

My husband and I went in on a Sunday and Maddy was there to help us. The store has a great selection, and Maddy was amazing. Very helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, patient and low pressure - a delight to work with, and a step above the staff in 3 different East Bay stores we'd visited. We presented several challenges to her and she kept coming up with ideas to help us find something that could work for both of us. What an awesome experience! read more

Our new mattress just arrived from Essential Sleep and it's sooooo nice! No more big box stores for our sleep needs. We really appreciate the personal and caring attitude of Chip and his wife and the mattress transaction was so easy and smooth from start to finish. The no pressure buying experience was refreshing compared to what we faced when we walked in to the big national retailers and their substandard products and HUGE markups. Give them a try and get a "mattress education" that is long over due! Highly recommend Essential Sleep and Bedding Gallery! read more

Diane, as multiple reviews suggest, is wonderful. Warm, attentive, knowledgeable, friendly, who puts no pressure on selling. It's always nice to shop from locally owned stores, which makes shopping here even better! Diane suggested which bed would suit us at get-go, which was our ultimate choice. We needed to replace our Tempupedic mattress due to mold issues (side note: no, apparently mold is not covered by their warranty! Crazy) and bought a Magniflex mattress. I never realized I was tossing and turning due to uncomfortable hips/back, until I slept on this mattress. Side note- the creator of this mattress was an orthopedic surgeon, and the mattress relieves pressure on your joints- literally- but stretching out your spine. Pretty amazing. What you will notice is that they have brand names (not blank like a competitor of theirs down the street), and they don't play games on pricing. In fact, Diane knew the mattress would go on sale a few business days later and gave us the deal! She's followed up to ask how we're sleeping- simple but caring touch! We have been sleeping on the mattress 2 weeks and feel really spoiled. The pillow she recommended is fab as well. Couldn't be happier! Thanks again Diane! Happy to refer friends/family as I anticipate we will have this bed a loooong time. :-) read more

Chip was extremely helpful in making sure I got a new mattress for my guest room by a specific date for Christmas company, despite the fact that the mattress was shipped later from the factory than had been promised. Thanks, Chip, very much appreciate your great customer support. Guests sleeping on the mattress report it's very comfy! read more

Update to my previous review. Since Yelp only posts the response email, I am pasting the correspondence that ensued after my initial review and Chip's response below. The main point is that NOT ONCE have they emailed me as stated nor have they called me, though every time I called the store back when I was still trying to get resolution without resorting to a bad public review, their wonderful employee Maddie was able to find my contact info easily in their computer. So it would appear this yelp messaging is merely an attempt to save public face, since there has been zero attempt to contact me privately to resolve the matter. Meanwhile, if anyone wants to buy a good quality, pristine condition extra firm mattress hit me up! Chip and Diane, you know how to reach me. I will not be coming back here or commmenting further. My response to Chip's publically viewable response to my review-- "Hi Chip and Diane. I rarely check yelp so I'm only just seeing this message from you. Not sure why you guys didn't try my phone or email address to reach me. Honestly I just was hoping to cut my losses and possibly get some sort of partial refund. I had no expectation of a full refund. I don't trust a 2 inch topper is going to do it and I am in so much for the mattress which is just so hard. I didn't see the point in taking another topper that you could just as easily sell when I don't expect it would work for me for very long. Part of the reason Diane suggested the wool topper to me in the first place was because I told her I'm not a big fan of latex. I sleep on a latex mattress whenever i visit a friend. I would have been happy with a refund of the above cost portion of the mattress and the topper, which seems a fair resolution to my husband and I, or at least something to mitigate the fact that I spent $2000 in your store on two items that caused me significant pain issues which have dissipated since sleeping in my (away at college) daughter's room. Anyway, if you wish to discuss further in any authentic wish to come to a mutual resolution please contact me via email -----Thanks so much. Chip & Diane's reply below seems nice, but they did not send the email they said they did nor did they call and I know 100% the store has my email and phone number. If they truly wanted to resolve this, and I'd be super happy to update if they did, they would contact me off of yelp. They have not. Not once "Hi Roxie, We want to give you the latex topper because in our expertise it will help A LOT!!!! We had originally offered to swap it but as Diane said on the phone when we spoke a few weeks ago we didn't care if we got the wool topper back. We can have it sent directly to your house if you don't want to visit the store. We are confident you will like this set up. Please get in touch and we will have a 2 inch all natural Latex topper sent to you. The 2 inch latex topper will feel quite luxurious even with out your wool topper but in combination I think you will be extremely pleased. Latex being natural rubber rebounds more than wool and does not compress. When we spoke a few weeks ago we offered that to you and you said you would come in and try it. I don't understand your change of heart. I'm sorry you are so upset. I do know this can be fixed easily with no additional cost to you. We sent you an email Dane and Chip Murison "Hi Chip and Diane. I rarely check yelp so I'm only just seeing this message from you. Not sure why you guys didn't try my phone or email address to reach me. My wife and I were about to buy a new mattress at another natural mattress store in San Rafael, but decided to check this place out after discovering it on Yelp and seeing the great reviews...and are we ever glad we did! This store may be new to San Rafael, but Diane and Chip (the owners) have been in the business for almost 20 years, really know their stuff, and were as knowledgable and friendly as can be. After taking the time to understand what we were looking for, our sleep styles, and what mattresses we liked at other stores, Diane took us on a great tour of their amazing mattresses and eventually steered us (in an absolutely consultative and zero-pressure way) to a beautiful, comfortable, organic mattress at a great price that we are so happy with. I don't mean to exactly copy these other reviews, but I love our new bed. I am sleeping so comfortably, and yes, knowing that the bed is organic does give me a peace of mind. I am a reformed Big-Box mattress shopper after buying from The Essential Sleep Shop in San Rafael. My wife and I had a great buying experience with Chip and Diane who sincerely want to give you the best product they can. We did not feel rushed or over-sold on any product and they re both very knowledgeable about their products. Unfortunately, after two years of great sleep on our mattress, the material started to break down and soften. Most mattress stores would not honor the warranty or leave it in the customer's lap to resolve the situation. In this case, Chip assured us that he would take care of things and within a week or so we got a replacement with another brand (they are no longer carrying the brand we bought) and there was no cost to us. We were very happy with this buying experience and are glad that some sellers still stand by their products and reputation. I see why they have such good reviews on Yelp! read more

I came across this store by an accident as I was shopping for a good quality mattress. Well all I have to say stop by there shop and get an education about how to buy the right matters that's right for you. They are not pushy or super slick salesforce that want to sell you a in stock mattress. I do support people like Chip Murison who are highly educated in there field. His company delivers on there promise. The prices are far more fare then your regular big box stores. I bought a Nutra organic mattress that's made in Canada. The quality is excellent and the fit and finish along with stitching is very superior soft and plush. I'm very happy with my new bed. They also sell excellent pillows along with all your bedding needs like sheets and covers etc etc. So please do go and support your local businesses. Keep up the good service and I sure to get more stuff in near future. Thanks a bunch. Cheers read more

This is a great store with a ton of selection on natural mattresses and bedding! Super friendly owners and great customer service!

We made the trip up to San Rafael this past weekend to visit Essential Sleep Boutique on 4th Street. My wife and I have been in the market for a new mattress. We both agreed we wanted a bed that was truly more natural than the beds you can find at a traditional or pseudo "natural" mattress store. Having a background in Chemistry & Biology it had come to my attention that there is significant amount of harmful off gassing of fire retardants and petroleum products used in the manufacture of most if not all traditional and "pseudo natural" mattresses. We weren't sure if we were in the market for natural memory foam, coil, or latex. After some research we found one store that had all these options under one roof so it was well worth the trip up to San Rafael to get an idea of all our options. We are so glad we did. We settled on a Naturepedic. It is perfect for us because the mattress firmness or plushness can be customized for each side of the bed and no crazy chemicals were used in its making. This has been very useful as my wife likes to sleep on a much firmer bed and I prefer a much softer plusher feel. We both got what we wanted and we were able to try literally all mattress types side by side without driving all over the bay area. This was a distinct advantage as trying to remember the feel of one bed versus another after a drive just was not working for us. Here we could immediately feel the difference and do a valid comparison. The owner, Diane, was very knowledgeable and did not try to "hard-sell". She helped my wife and I find a bed that matched our needs and our price point. The store has a great atmosphere, excellent selection and no pressure sales. I would highly recommend to anyone considering a new mattress for themselves and/or their family to visit this San Rafael store. As an added bonus when done get a delicious falafel at the Falafel Hut across the street. read more

Bought a mattress from them recently. They're super knowledgeable and great people. Highly recommended.

Finally - we bought a new bed! My wife and I had been shopping for a new mattress for over a year now, seeking an organic product that does not have toxic flame retardants, petroleum based chemicals, etc, that produce all that toxic off-gassing stink. We shopped all over the SF Bay area but were turned off both by the price and by the hard, sometimes slimy sales approaches. Noticed Essential Sleep a few weeks ago and decided to take the time being that it was right here in San Rafael. Diane, the owner, politely greeted us about 30 seconds after we entered the shop and browsed a bit. Skeptical at first, my wife and I were quickly won over. After all the consistently, even pushy sales people we had experienced in other mattress stores, In addition to being extremely knowledgeable regarding a variety of product lines, the HUGE difference was that she actually cared about us, who we were, what our needs and wishes were, and helped us to find a solution that suited both of us. We spent several hours trying every combination of variables (mattress layers can be switched out by hand right there!) till we found our perfect match! We felt like we were family friends, and it was wonderful to see that another couple that came in were treated exactly the same. This was a major purchase for us, and being treated with patience, respect, professionalism and care made all the difference in the world to us. Thanks Diane!! So glad to know you are in the neighborhood! read more

I had been putting off bed shopping, despite aches and pains from a bed that needs replacement, because I dreaded going from place to place, not knowing how a bed would feel from only lying on it in the stores, and being confused by sales people perhaps wanting to make a sale. What great luck when I accidentally happened into Essential Sleep, the new bed and bedding store on Fourth Street in San Rafael! Diane, the owner: (1) knows the characteristics of each bed; (2) can question the customer and observe her sleep style to be able to suggest the appropriate sleep option; (3) suggests what is good for the customer, not for profits; (4) employs absolutely NO pressure sales tactics; and (5) is so easy to communicate with, even with an indecisive customer like me. Diane can even navigate intra-couple differences about the type of bed wanted/needed. My husband and I narrowed down the options to what appeared to be one of the most expensive and one of the least expensive beds in the store, willing to buy either if it was the right choice. Diane listened and observed and actually suggested the less expensive bed, which we bought. And the prices are reasonable for what is sold. Diane has been incredibly flexible and accommodating about delivery with our busy schedules. To address the problem of not knowing how a bed feels until one has slept in it for at least 30 days, Essential Sleep's policy is to take back a bed that doesn't work for the customer after a trial period. We also bought a wonderful organic mattress pad and will turn to this store when it's time for pillow replacement. read more
