I have to say my experience in part was negative because it was a Halloween children's costume walk day on the main street so there was loud music playing in the store along with children coming and getting candy the whole time. However, the main problem was with the salesman who didn't seem to understand my questions and when he finally seemed to understand that I was asking about the angle, the adjustable beds could move to said that they all moved to the same angle, even though it was obvious to the naked eye that they didn't. Exploring downtown San Rafael for the first time, we happen to come across this place. What timing! We recently moved and are looking for a new bed. We pop hoping to get a sale because it looks like they are moving soon - soon as in a few weeks according to the lady that helped us. She was very kind and took the time to show us around. She showed us the difference between a King vs a Cal King which was something we had been curious about. It's pretty much longer vs wider. But as a visual and tactile learner, I appreciated being able to see and lay down on the two to check them out. They were selling off their floor samples before the move which are at a great deal but we wanted to look around a bit more before committing. Got her card and made sure to note where they are moving to. They had some great deals like free delivery, which includes even Oakland (East Bay). I had a great experience purchasing a new mattress from Essential Sleep. I bought a Naturepedic Halcyon organic mattress and it is the most comfortable organic mattress I have owned. This is my fourth organic mattress and as a side sleeper, I never found the other brands to be comfortable; always too firm for me. Yesterday Essential Sleep delivered a Berkeley Ergonomics Nordic mattress to replace the comparable mattress from 2005. My experience with this business was great from start to finish. Diane, the co-owner, helped me select the mattress that was closest to the one that we replaced. She informed me that Essential Sleep would recycle the old mattress, which was a plus for me. On the day of delivery, Chip, the other co-owner, kept me informed about when the delivery staff would arrive. My wife and I are SO HAPPY that we found Diane and Chip's Essential Sleep! With the billion or so mattress shops screaming for business with their cheap, chemical laced options blaring on the radio, we didn't know we had a choice. Then we stumbled in to Essential Sleep and had what we imagine is a life changing experience. Diane took her time explaining the benefits of all the different brands and styles, and, of course, let us take our time relaxing on each one. We ended up with the Italian Magniflex. More comfortable than the Tempupedic's that we tried, and made with certified Organic Cotton and OEKO Tex environmentally certified. We are sleeping 8 hours a night, it's pretty comforting knowing that we are no longer sleeping on a pile of chemicals! More than anything, we are happy we bought from a local, family owned shop. My wife and I found Essential Sleep while shopping for a new mattress last month. We almost bought a mattress from nearby Mattress Firm, but what we thought was a good mattress for us was out of stock. Luckily we kept looking around San Rafael for alternative stores, and after reading the terrific Yelp reviews for Essential Sleep we felt compelled to stop by. The store co-owner, Diane, spent about 30 minutes showing us our options and was very easy to work with - no pressure sales at all, just lots of helpful information. We stayed in the store at least another 30 minutes and got to know Diane more (she's SO nice!). We didn't buy that day, but did a little more research online (mattressunderground.com is a great website that was recommended to us by Diane's husband). We learned that buying a USA made product that avoids using adhesives and chemicals was the right choice for us. We considered buying a Berkeley Ergonomics mattress but decided on a NaturePedic EOS. Both companies are great. We spent more than what we had planned on when initially looking for a mattress, but we're so happy we did. The NaturePedic EOS was shipped directly to our home from the factory in Ohio, and it took at most an hour to set up the mattress ourselves (if you're not familiar with this product it comes in three components - the encasement, the coil support, and the comfort layer). It's a unique mattress design and well worth checking out. The natural/organic materials have zero off-gassing, unlike the mattresses from the big box stores. We are happy we selected the NaturePedic EOS, and even more delighted that we made our purchase at Essential Sleep because the best part of our shopping experience was meeting Diane and her husband Chip. Love my bed! What originally drew me to visiting Essential Sleep was that they offered non-toxic (i.e. non-offgassing) options. The owners, Diane and Chip were both in the store at the time and were so kind (and low-pressure -no 'car salesmen' vibes at this family business) and informative about all the various options they carry. I ended up falling in love with a Chattam & Wells latex-coil bed. It's a brand I've heard of before but didn't realize they had a natural/eco-friendly line of beds, as I've only seen them in more conventional mattress stores. Bonus, Chattam & Wells beds are made in the US! I've been sleeping on my bed for about 7 months now (so it's fully 'broken in') and am still so happy with my choice. I have recently been working with Essential Sleep to find a non-toxic mattress. The mattress that I selected is not working out. So far I have not found the right one for me. However Diane and Chip have been great through this entire process and have been working hard with me to find the right mattress even if it's not at their store. They have affably agreed to refund me for the mattress if we cannot find one that works for me. I feel like Diane and I have become good friends throughout this process. And though I have not found a mattress that I like in the store right now Diane and Chip have been graciously helping me find what I need. My husband and I have been looking for a new mattress since we have been experiencing comfort problems with our current one. We wanted something more natural than what we were seeing because we didn't want that horrible smell that came with our current mattress. So my husband and I headed over to Essential Sleep Boutique in San Rafael as they offered natural memory foam, coil and latex beds and even organic beds. Suprised with the selection, we decided on a Naturepedic. What I like the most about it besides it being organic is each side can be customized to meet our comfort needs. (My husband prefers his side firmer) Diane spent a lot of time with us, changing the layers from soft coils to firm coils and all the different options for the comfort layers on top. We spent hours there and she was gracious the whole time and didn't rush us one bit. Happy that we both got what we wanted and did not have to settle or compromise in between firmness. I recently purchased a bed from Essential Sleep after visiting several other natural mattress stores nearby. . . gotta love Marin and the fact that we've got an abundance of options in this category all within walking distance! That actually proved extremely helpful since I could very quickly get a feel for the quality of service that I'd be getting, which as it turns out is really important where buying a bed is concerned. And that's the main thing I want to highlight in this review. AMAZING, ATTENTIVE SERVICE! I had interactions with Peter, Diane and Chris in-person, by phone and via email and the whole team was simply wonderful. They helped me find the products that match my needs, worked with my budget, even threw in some very attractive extras that certainly helped to sweeten the deal. They were very accommodating of my tricky schedule when it came to delivery, and most of all, it was a very easy process. As for my bed and pillows, while I know it's recommended to wait a month before really passing judgement, less than a week in I'm pretty delighted. My Encore Patriarch mattress and the Z pillows are all incredibly comfortable, soft with the right amount of support. Diane, as multiple reviews suggest, is wonderful. Warm, attentive, knowledgeable, friendly, who puts no pressure on selling. It's always nice to shop from locally owned stores, which makes shopping here even better! Diane suggested which bed would suit us at get-go, which was our ultimate choice. We needed to replace our Tempupedic mattress due to mold issues (side note: no, apparently mold is not covered by their warranty! Crazy) and bought a Magniflex mattress. I never realized I was tossing and turning due to uncomfortable hips/back, until I slept on this mattress. Side note- the creator of this mattress was an orthopedic surgeon, and the mattress relieves pressure on your joints- literally- but stretching out your spine. Pretty amazing. What you will notice is that they have brand names (not blank like a competitor of theirs down the street), and they don't play games on pricing. In fact, Diane knew the mattress would go on sale a few business days later and gave us the deal! She's followed up to ask how we're sleeping- simple but caring touch! We have been sleeping on the mattress 2 weeks and feel really spoiled. The pillow she recommended is fab as well. Couldn't be happier! Thanks again Diane! I am a reformed Big-Box mattress shopper after buying from The Essential Sleep Shop in San Rafael. My wife and I had a great buying experience with Chip and Diane who sincerely want to give you the best product they can. We did not feel rushed or over-sold on any product and they re both very knowledgeable about their products. Unfortunately, after two years of great sleep on our mattress, the material started to break down and soften. Most mattress stores would not honor the warranty or leave it in the customer's lap to resolve the situation. In this case, Chip assured us that he would take care of things and within a week or so we got a replacement with another brand (they are no longer carrying the brand we bought) and there was no cost to us. I've always liked memory foam beds but never liked the price tag until I saw the magniflex in the store. By far the best mattress I've laid on and is very affordable. I came across this store by an accident as I was shopping for a good quality mattress. Well all I have to say stop by there shop and get an education about how to buy the right matters that's right for you. They are not pushy or super slick salesforce that want to sell you a in stock mattress. I do support people like Chip Murison who are highly educated in there field. His company delivers on there promise. The prices are far more fare then your regular big box stores. I bought a Nutra organic mattress that's made in Canada. The quality is excellent and the fit and finish along with stitching is very superior soft and plush. I'm very happy with my new bed. They also sell excellent pillows along with all your bedding needs like sheets and covers etc etc. So please do go and support your local businesses. We made the trip up to San Rafael this past weekend to visit Essential Sleep Boutique on 4th Street. My wife and I have been in the market for a new mattress. We both agreed we wanted a bed that was truly more natural than the beds you can find at a traditional or pseudo "natural" mattress store. Having a background in Chemistry & Biology it had come to my attention that there is significant amount of harmful off gassing of fire retardants and petroleum products used in the manufacture of most if not all traditional and "pseudo natural" mattresses. We weren't sure if we were in the market for natural memory foam, coil, or latex. After some research we found one store that had all these options under one roof so it was well worth the trip up to San Rafael to get an idea of all our options. We are so glad we did. We settled on a Naturepedic. It is perfect for us because the mattress firmness or plushness can be customized for each side of the bed and no crazy chemicals were used in its making. This has been very useful as my wife likes to sleep on a much firmer bed and I prefer a much softer plusher feel. We both got what we wanted and we were able to try literally all mattress types side by side without driving all over the bay area. This was a distinct advantage as trying to remember the feel of one bed versus another after a drive just was not working for us. Here we could immediately feel the difference and do a valid comparison. The owner, Diane, was very knowledgeable and did not try to "hard-sell". She helped my wife and I find a bed that matched our needs and our price point. The store has a great atmosphere, excellent selection and no pressure sales. I would highly recommend to anyone considering a new mattress for themselves and/or their family to visit this San Rafael store. Finally - we bought a new bed! My wife and I had been shopping for a new mattress for over a year now, seeking an organic product that does not have toxic flame retardants, petroleum based chemicals, etc, that produce all that toxic off-gassing stink. We shopped all over the SF Bay area but were turned off both by the price and by the hard, sometimes slimy sales approaches. Noticed Essential Sleep a few weeks ago and decided to take the time being that it was right here in San Rafael. Diane, the owner, politely greeted us about 30 seconds after we entered the shop and browsed a bit. Skeptical at first, my wife and I were quickly won over. After all the consistently, even pushy sales people we had experienced in other mattress stores, In addition to being extremely knowledgeable regarding a variety of product lines, the HUGE difference was that she actually cared about us, who we were, what our needs and wishes were, and helped us to find a solution that suited both of us. We spent several hours trying every combination of variables (mattress layers can be switched out by hand right there!) till we found our perfect match! We felt like we were family friends, and it was wonderful to see that another couple that came in were treated exactly the same. This was a major purchase for us, and being treated with patience, respect, professionalism and care made all the difference in the world to us. Thanks Diane!! I had been putting off bed shopping, despite aches and pains from a bed that needs replacement, because I dreaded going from place to place, not knowing how a bed would feel from only lying on it in the stores, and being confused by sales people perhaps wanting to make a sale. What great luck when I accidentally happened into Essential Sleep, the new bed and bedding store on Fourth Street in San Rafael! Diane, the owner: (1) knows the characteristics of each bed; (2) can question the customer and observe her sleep style to be able to suggest the appropriate sleep option; (3) suggests what is good for the customer, not for profits; (4) employs absolutely NO pressure sales tactics; and (5) is so easy to communicate with, even with an indecisive customer like me. Diane can even navigate intra-couple differences about the type of bed wanted/needed. My husband and I narrowed down the options to what appeared to be one of the most expensive and one of the least expensive beds in the store, willing to buy either if it was the right choice. Diane listened and observed and actually suggested the less expensive bed, which we bought. And the prices are reasonable for what is sold. Diane has been incredibly flexible and accommodating about delivery with our busy schedules. To address the problem of not knowing how a bed feels until one has slept in it for at least 30 days, Essential Sleep's policy is to take back a bed that doesn't work for the customer after a trial period.
