It's self-service, so no waiting around to order and then pay, and you can get a card to collect stamps and get a free coffee, you can then collect the cards to get a kg of Hochland coffee. You'll find it up the side street, by Karstadt, in the pedestrian zone. You can read a magazine or today's newspaper, there are chairs and tables outside and in winter there are blankets for your knees and patio heaters, to keep the top of your head warm. It's all very civilized.

If you go out by yourself you probably won't mind sitting right across the bar, and by facing it it's easy to start chatting with the owner or the waiters (unless they're already engaged in a discussion themselves). It was the best spot to visit right after getting off a redeye from JFK to grab some bread and other baked goods for the week. My friend did all the talking for us and asked if there were any pastries that were vegan friendly. The staff were kind to point out a few but we ended up sticking with some classic loafs to have for our breakfasts. We left with a bunch of sourdough and baguettes for home that were freshly baked, and you really can't ask for more. Happy that we dropped by to grab the essentials before heading home.
