I a-door you

"The Doughboy is neither dough, nor a boy. Discuss!" Saratoga's doughboys are about as Upstate NY as it gets. The staple, late-night, Caroline Street snack is a legend in its own right, and finishing your night out with a doughboy in lieu of a slice of 'za is a strong move. But why should the night owls have all the fun? While in Saratoga for an appointment the other afternoon, I was craving that pizza crust filled capsule of goodness by the time I wrapped up shortly after 6 pm (early bird special?), and couldn't resist a quick walk over to pick a few boys up to take home (that's how I roll). I cruised over in no time, and found myself to be the only customer in the place, with the exception of coupla boys finishing up a coupla 'boys at a table inside. The doughboy display case looked a little bare to the untrained eye, but I knew what I was looking for, and there were plenty of boys to go around. I selected three doughboys, and two samosas to take home to snack on for the night/week (I can easily get a few meals out of this purchase). I've pretty much never not had a doughboy when I've been here, and I love samosas in general, so I'm excited to try something new from the geniuses behind the Doughboy. Ah, the Doughboy -- now officially dubbed an Oboy because rebranding and trademark/copyright stuff -- is a delectable cream-cheese-and-chicken-filled snack, stuffed into a pizza dough torpedo, begging to be dunked in copious amounts of hot sauce. Newsflash: you don't have to be drunk for a doughboy taste good, they always taste amazing regardless of your BAC. The good folks calling the shots at Esperanto are now doing God's work, thanks to an exciting and arguably long overdue expansion to build an operation capable of producing oboys by the boatload, blowing minds and palates of the people beyond the 518, and in this crazy world, that's a mission I can get behind. As a local who's known and loved the baked snack as a "Doughboy," for 20-plus years now, I have to admit, I'm having a little trouble with the name change, even though it's been roughly two years now; I might always refer to it as a doughboy, bc I'm OG like that. I wonder what the correlation is between Upstate New Yorkers with the 518 area code calling it a doughboy, vs. those with the new 838 area code, falling into the Oboy trap? These are the tough questions. Hmm, Doughboy or Oboy? The debate might just become a new chapter in regional Upstate New York food lore.

Gyro. Meat was kinda grody. Pita and veggies were good. Would not get it again.

Just meh. This is an institution on Caroline Street but it really is late night drunkard fare. Small portions and high prices. I find that doughboys are inconsistent and pretty much suck. Tried a gyro this time and it was pretty meh. It's definitely not fresh meat carved off a spit like Greek places do. It almost seemed like it was prefrozen and heated up? The veggies and the pita bread were good though, but I eat a gyro expecting great meat and that just didn't happen. Come here loaded and you won't care, otherwise, you will.

The food is always consistently delicious and the prices are good for fast casual. There's not usually much of a wait time either.

The pizza was rubbery. Disappointed. Would not get it again. Buffalo chicken was just shredded chicken. Recommend finding another location.

They were over an hour delivering their order. Disrespectful and lacking in any form of accommodating service.

9 Miles East Farm - Barnyard Pizza -- Sourdough crust with sausage

I love when local eateries are well-loved because they deserve it. 9 Miles East Farm certainly does! A lot of the folks who came in for dinner wanted to sit on the terrace to bask in the last couple of hours of sun, but being from Florida I get overdosed with that and sat inside. I'm glad I did, the playlist reminded me of a Sunday picnic without being either. However, the atmosphere felt like that, even indoors. The owner was super personable, and the server was just the right amount of attentive. I ordered the chicken piri piri, and it presented beautifully. I felt comforted by the food. The tender grilled chicken parted from the bone with a twist of my fork and the mashed sweet potato was a great partner to the savory, citrusy, and slightly spicy piri piri. Im not even a chicken thigh person, but this dish changed me. I actually felt tended to and taken care of by the food! Does that even make sense??? It did when I was eating because that's how I felt. And the crazy thing is, I've been here once before. I loved what I ate, but it didn't feel like this. It's been a rough couple of months, but after this meal and listening to the carefree, but intentional music, it lit up my mood and my spirit. This will definitely be one of my go-to's when I visit Saratoga Springs, and I highly recommend 9 Miles East Farm to anyone. I think that a lot of people feel like they're visiting a friend's place when they come here. I definitely did.

Jay's cab recommended this and I'm so glad they did. I ordered a ricotta roni I think I thought…read morethey ricotta was going to be mixed in with a tomato sauce but I'm glad that it was put in little logs on the pizza. I did like it a lot. It was very fresh. There was enough pepperoni and I liked the pepperoni. It had a good amount of mozzarella cheese and it was a fresh mozzarella cheese cuz this was the old style section of the menu. I also got a sausage and mushroom pizza I felt like there could have been more sausage and mushroom, and it could have been spread out evenly. That being said I did like it. It had regular mozzarella. I like their sauce. The crust was thin crust which I like and it had a good flavor. They put corn meal on the bottom of the pizza. There's a 20 to 30 minute drive time the pizza was warm when I got home it's been really cold out. I couldn't get it to reheat where the bottom of the crust was super crisp which makes me really just want to go there in person and get a Super Fresh Slice one day. I was despairing of finding a thin crust pizza that taste awesome since I moved but this was one of the best places I've gone to for pizza. My roommate gave it his seal of approval when he said it's not terrible. I've come to the conclusion he has no taste buds. It's a little more expensive than the pizza at the place I used to live at although it could be their prices went up I moved so I have no clue. Good great pizza is always worth the price. And there was enough for both of us and for leftovers and even more leftovers as I got two mediums. I didn't go inside so I don't know anything about what it looks like Ambience lies but I definitely recommend the pizza.

You would think knowing it's Halloween they would either get more help or not take so many orders. Never again will I phone in an order. It's a seat yourself, order at the bar kind of place, which honestly worked perfectly and kept things moving without feeling rushed. We took full advantage of happy hour and ordered the BBQ chips with caramelized onion dip, Detroit pepperoni pizza, shrimp, three sliders, a side of fries, plus a beer and a margarita. And let me just say this was one of those orders where everything hits. The shrimp were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and tender inside. The Detroit pizza had a standout crust that alone is worth coming back for. Even the fries held their own, which is saying something. The prices for happy hour are almost too good for how good the food is, and nothing felt like a "small plate" afterthought. Every dish came out hot, fresh, and clearly made with care. Even without traditional table service, the bartender was incredibly attentive and made sure we were taken care of from start to finish. We never once felt like we were missing anything. Whitman's is the kind of place you stumble into once and immediately add to your regular rotation. Great food, great value, great energy. We'll definitely be back.

The music, all the art on the walls and overall vibe was very fun and family-friendly. The staff was friendly and upbeat. We ordered a couple of drinks; the Gangster Scientist (a beer my husband was very pleased with!) and a Hibiscus Paloma which I thought was very good as well. For food we got the Smash Burger and the Chicken Sandwich! Both which came with fries. We both rate the fries 10/10!! Battered, seasoned and crispy pretty much perfectly. The burger was delicious, although pretty messy (that's good or bad depending on opinion lol) The chicken sandwich had great flavor, but I thought could have used more sauce as it felt kind of dry. I give it a 7/10, it was good but I probably wouldn't order it again and try something else. But overall we were very pleased with our experience and we can't wait to go there again!
