I have been to several escape rooms in the Richmond area and Escape Old Towne is one the best around! This is a veteran-owned and family-operated business that takes pride in making sure that everyone has a fun experience. The waiting area is comfortable and inviting. Being a 19th century building in Old Towne adds to the character of the venue. It is just walking distance from several cool restaurants and bars, which is nice. Parking can be tight on the weekends, so best to arrive early. There is a parking area behind the building, however. The staff there is awesome - very friendly and hilarious. Win or lose, they will be there when the doors open at the end to share in your excitement of completing the room or to make light of your failure to escape. Most escape rooms have staff that will greet you at the end, but the energy and enthusiasm of the people at Escape Old Towne far exceeded any of the other escape room experiences I have had in the RVA area. The rooms themselves are put together very well. Although there may not be as many technical elements as some other escape rooms, both the "Defuse the Bomb" and "Jekyll & Hyde" rooms have a good combination of technical and more basic puzzles that flow well together. That way there is something there for everyone. The bomb room had some very cool props and puzzles. Although we did not escape, it was still enjoyable. I also liked how the Jekyll & Hyde room incorporated a lot of science in the puzzles and clues. They were both challenging but not too difficult. We did the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde room at Escape Old Towne in Petersburg and it was hands down one of the BEST escape rooms I've ever experienced! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was immersive and set the tone perfectly. The storyline was incredibly well thought out, dark, mysterious, and full of twists that kept us hooked the entire time. The room design was next level. Every detail, from the props to the lighting and sound effects, made it feel like we were actually inside Dr. Jekyll's lab. The puzzles were challenging but fair, perfectly balanced so you really have to think and work together, but not so hard that it becomes frustrating. There were a few surprises in there that had us shook (in the best way ). What really stood out was the staff, they were friendly, engaging, and clearly passionate about what they do. You can tell they care about making sure you have a great experience from start to finish. If you're in the Petersburg area and looking for something fun, interactive, and different, this is it. Perfect for date night, family outings, or a group of friends. We're already planning to come back and try another room! 10/10 highly recommend! read more

I've been to many of the greater Richmond escape room establishments and Escape Old Towne is certainly among the best! I've done their Area 51 room once and 80s Prom room twice (the first time was to beta test it before it officially opened - they took our feedback into account and the room was much better the second time). The highlight is certainly the amount of detail they put into designing the rooms: Area 51 in particular is definitely one of the best looking I've ever done! Without spoiling anything, most of the puzzles are top notch (the Rubik's cube in the 80s prom room is among my favorite escape room puzzles ever). Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend Escape Old Towne to newcomers looking to get into escape rooms for the first time and avid escape room hobbyists alike! Not the worst area, but downtown Petersburg can be a bit dodgy at night, so keep that in mind. Be prepared for street parking as well. Typically not a busy area, so I've never had any trouble finding a spot nearby. read more

I did this for my daughter's 12th Birthday party. We had such a great time. The room was challenging. It kept us thinking and on our toes! It was our first escape room, except for one of us and he even thought it was great. The staff was so friendly and nice. Explained everything we needed to know. I had one person unable to attend and they were even willing to give me a voucher, however I chose a T-Shirt for my daughter so she has great memories of what a fun day it was. Had a a great experience here with some friends today! We did the "CLUE Room", and it was so much fun and a great experience. When we came in to check in, the woman who was operating the front desk greeted us, gave us some ground rules and tips for our room, and she was so polite and attentive. It was a well thought out, nicely challenging, and very detailed room. Failed to beat the Jeckyl and Hyde room, but had a fun time trying! Definitely challenging for adults. Kids will need help and (if they're anything like mine) a little encouragement that they are helping. It gets stressful towards the end! Pay attention to the hints and tips on the lobby and communicate with each other constantly! And don't stress the result! Just enjoy the challenge! Has a really good time. This is one of my favorite escape rooms. The games are challenging and the puzzles are varied. You will not find just a bunch of locks and boxes here, the puzzles are often tactile and themes immersive. Hands down this place is worth your time. During our last visit our GM, Peyton, went out of her to make the experience fun. We love to talk about escape rooms and nerd culture and she spent time with us doing just that after the game. read more

The rooms are entertaining and my daughter and I had a great time trying to escape. They give you five free hints, if you need them, and any additional hints will take two minutes off of your time. The staff are always friendly and I usually end up chatting with them for a while afterwards. The puzzles are challenging, but not too hard. We were a group of 7, I wouldn't put more than 8 people per room. We tried the clue room which was the hardest room at the time. It was pretty hard, and we needed all 3 clues. Overall my group of friends loved the experience, and want to try it again. The room looked older, but it went with the game. Overall great experience! read more

The staff is among the best I've seen and we have been to about 20 different states with escape rooms and over 25 rooms and this one was among the best!!! My family and I had a fun time in the Clue room, even with this being my fourth escape room experience (first time in Petersburg). Love this place! Staff so awesome too! Can be hard to do rooms with others that are more energetic than most but still fun. Young kids have fun but can easily be overlooked by others. Have to make sure you dont let others take over and jump in to be apart of team. read more

Escape Old Towne is awesome place. They have the Dr.Jekyll/ Mr Hyde room set up perfectly. The room has so many puzzles that you will be push the limits of the time you have in the room. The room has something for everyone no matter your skill level. read more
