We absolutely LOVED our experience at Escape Hilo. Whether this is your first or 50th escape room, you will be charmed by the unique story and vibe of this one-man owned and operated game. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that Ryan was extremely passionate about his escape room and very enthusiastic about the experience we were about to have. He even designed and built the entire room on his own! At first, we thought that the game might be a little quirky and jank. But no--this room is LEGIT. My partner and I have done about 15-20 escape games and this one provided an exciting level of challenge but was still doable for two experienced people. We actually ended up being just one number away from solving the number code to escape! Ryan did a fantastic job setting expectations and providing helpful hints when asked. The puzzles are challenging, but never punishing. The next task always reveals itself in a really neat way. If you're on the Hilo side, we highly recommend trying out this escape game! You literally will not find another game like it! read more

Me and the family (only 3 of us this time) always does an escape rooms wherever we go and this one in Hilo is one of our new favorites. The host, who also owns the place, was friendly, enthusiastic and informative! The theme: Hilo Volcano, Halloween edition, was super fun! The puzzles were just difficult enough to make it fun! 10/10 Recommend! read more

He relocated by the Tavern! Also added some new puzzles and got some new puzzles coming up soon! We went and conquered the room with a little over 1 minute remaining! Our Jujitsu kids had a blast along with parents. We learned to work together and this night we will never forget! We challenge other Jujitsu schools to see if they have it to beat the escape room like we did! Highly recommend this place the only escape room in Hilo! Support this guy Ryan! He added a little Halloween theme too to it!! Mahalos for the experience and memories! #AJJ Alameda Jujitsu read more

This was SO fun. We won with only 5 min left Definitely going back to try the expert level!!

We lost, but even losing was an hour of excitement and fun. We didn't know what to expect but the enthusiasm of Ryan and expectation of winning made it the highlight of our week. I am looking forward to the Christmas holiday theme and taking my entire family as we try to escape successfully......maybe. This was a wonderful activity and worth every penny. Thanks Ryan for making this possible. read more

Ryan is AMAZING!! Visited a little over a month ago with family. We took visiting family to the escape room. We had 3 adults, 2 teenage boys, 3 younger boys and girls. It was my first experience with an escape room, and Ryan you have set the bar HIGH! Don't know if others can match this one. Ryan has a caring heart and wants the best for the competitors. He's not out to just take your money and hope you lose. He did everything he could to make our time a memorable one, and it still is a highlight of their visit! We will DEFINITELY send more here to experience this room. We'll done Ryan! read more

So much fun! This place was a lot more fun and impressive than expected. I don't want to spoil it by sharing too much, but I would definitely go again!! read more

We had an awesome time at Escape Hilo! It was an Hawaiian theme and full of talking Tikis, fun surprises and locks and locks and locks. Seven of us entered the room and seven of us escaped with 1 1/2 minutes to spare! From 20 year old young, sharp minds to older (up to 97 years old) more devious minds we deciphered the clues in noisy boisterous fashion. This is a well organized event and well worth a visit by tourists and locals alike. Thanks for a great time! read more

Came here on our last day for our Big Island trip. We love escape rooms and did a good amount of them on Oahu and decided to come here. Ryan our game master is awesome! He's full of great energy and very friendly. Before beginning the escape he asked how we were doing which is nice, not a lot of people ask that. They just go straight into the rules of the game and throw us into the room lol. The room itself was super fun with lots of locks and puzzles to solve. I was surprised myself when i opened a few locks just by trying everything with the information I found throughout. Some of the clues we definitely got stuck on and it took us a while just to figure it out. Thankful for Ryan for being detailed with the hints we provided that made sense and also didn't give away the answer right away and still had us guessing and thinking of the answer. Although we didn't escape fast enough and we we're so close! We had a lot of fun. Would definitely come back again to try it out. read more

Was walking around when we saw the Escape Room sign and called to book the next reservation that day. Our host Ryan was a lot of fun, had a great personality. Came as a party of only two, and went with Norma difficulty. Was worried that we wouldn't be able to solve it with just the two of us, but the room was still just as fun with just us two. Each puzzle was satisfying to figure out and made sense. With only the two of us, we solved the room with about 4 minutes left. read more

5 stars, Two Thumbs up, Absolutely exceptional! Our family of 4 tries to do an escape room on every vacation and this was our shot on the big island. Ryan is super excited about his room and obviously spent a lot of time planning it. There are two big surprises, one of which we have never seen in another escape room, and apparently very few groups actually figure this surprise out. We were so surprised by it, in fact, that I don't think we utilized it very effectively. There are a lot of keys and combo locks, and a few other physical tasks that make this a difficult and fun room. Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenaged boys) escaped with less than ONE MINUTE left, and only needed help with two clues. Ryan, if you make another room (and we're back on the big island someday) we will absolutely be knocking on your door. Thanks for a really great time in Hilo. -#TeamRachac read more

Escape Hilo - Victory!!! Another escape room conquered!! - Escape Games Near Me - Hilo, Hawaii

Definitely worth it! We almost won and had a ton of fun.

Hilo, Hawaii is our first stop on our Hawaii island cruise tour back in April 2019 and "Escape Hilo" is the only escape room available on the island of Hilo. Hilo rains a lot and we experienced that first hand when we got off the cruise ship. This island makes a great escape room location for an indoor activity. Escape Hilo is located on the second floor of a building complex built in 1912. Inside the complex, there are quite a few selection of stores and restaurants providing plenty to do. The complex also has plenty of parking. It may be hard to find "Escape Hilo", but follow the sign and keep walking left all the way down until the end of the building (you will have to go down half a flight of stairs in the middle section). It'll be the last door to your right at the end of the hallway. We were grateful to have met the developer and owner of the location and at age 23, he's probably the youngest owner we have out of all the escape room locations yet to date. The lobby was very cozy and serves complimentary local drinks to the players. We can tell that he has a great passion for the island and escape rooms and how it was all incorporated in this first room. The room that we are attempting to escape today is called "Plantation Escape". Right from the start, we felt transported to a Japanese immigrant's home. There were many plantations then on the island and this one so happens to be built over an ancient Hawaiian "menehune" wall. We won't divulge into any of the surprises that we've seen as the story developed, but we were pleasantly surprised at the turnover of events. He cleverly used many island-inspired puzzles in his escape room theme. The puzzles weren't all linear, so you can get a group in there and divide and conquer in different areas although we suggest probably 4 people would be a perfect size. There's a puzzle in there that you could get stuck on if you don't have prior knowledge of a certain skill, but the game master will definitely help out if you have any issues with that one. Overall, we really enjoyed the game as the puzzle flow went well with the storyline until the end. We hope that if you are ever in Hilo, definitely give them a try and we also hope to return to try out his new rooms in the future! * Check out our YouTube video for a sneak peek of the location, interview with the owner, the room and more on our website: www.escapetheroomers.com read more

My husband and I have done many escape rooms so we feel pretty confident going to escape rooms with just the two of us. While on vacation in Hilo, we came across this escape room while just walking around downtown and decided to give it a shot. Ryan, the game runner, was very nice and enthusiastic. The room was well designed and we both felt like we had to work hard to solve the clues / puzzles. Per Ryan, we did very well for a group of 2! From the reviews I've read there is only one escape room in the Hilo area and I would highly recommend it! read more

I wasn't sure what to expect of a Christmas themed room (in July) at a one room escape room in a small town. We're veteran escape room fans who've done around 70 rooms. I didn't need to worry - this was a well thought out room with some really fun puzzles and we had a good time and escaped with just 2 minutes to spare. Very enjoyable and worth your time if you're visiting Hilo! read more

We wanted to try this place out while we were in Hilo, but it was impossible to book a session. We walked in while in the neighborhood and were told by the guy there that you could only sign up online. When we went online to book it, the third-party website only said that you couldn't sign up online and had to call a number. Called the number and got a generic voicemail box to leave a message. Left a message saying we wanted to book a session, but no one ever called back. Sent an email to the email address on the website saying we wanted to sign up and left a mobile number, but again, no reply even a day later. Maybe the puzzle you're supposed to solve here is not how to get out, but how to get in? read more

Best first experience with an escape room I could have had. There was so many brain teaser moments and super cool parts of the process involving lights, tikis, and an ukulele. I'd 100% recommend checking it out and I'll be back when he changes the rooms' theme again! read more

I had never tried an escape room before, but thought it would be a fun team building activity for my staff and I. We all had a blast. Ryan, our host, was delightful, and the clues, surprises, and riddles were great. So, if you are looking for a fun, different, bonding adventure to do with your family or co-workers, I heartily recommend the Escape Room, but double check your numbers! Out of all the Escape Rooms I have done, this one turned out to be one of the most surprising ones I have ever done! Me and my family did it today and were SHOCKED the state has an escape room of this quality! Ryan was the best host out of any store ive been in, all escape room hosts should take lessons from him. A true professional at his job and quirky as hell. After we we're done he told each individual what they have done to help EVEN TO THE SMALLEST DETAIL. No host in any escape room has done that for us. We'll be coming back for his next theme for sure! read more
