Expectations should be set toward summer camp. It's a little rustic, has a new-age vibe and a sense that people are trying to make this vision work. It's not cheap because it happens to be nestled into a prime location. Of course, camping elsewhere is an option. But to get to a break-even point, you must factor in clean sheets, hot shower, three square meals, and the fraternity of right-minded people. Then there are the workshops. They aren't for everybody. You'll need to shop around. I did a hiking workshop, was paired with a nice group of people from across the country, and led by an experienced and capable team. The "safety in numbers" concept adds value. We stayed in a queen bed w/ private bath and ocean view in a building called Rolf on a cliff above the baths. With the patio door cracked you could hear the ocean crash into the rocks below and feel a cool breeze all night long. It was unforgettable and as cozy as being rocked to sleep. We did heed some of the yelp comments, here are a few: (1) brought our own pillows, what was provided were flat; (2) brought our own blanket, comfier; (3) Brought our own soap and shampoo, liquid soap was provided; (4) Brought our own towels, didn't need them; and (5) brought our own coffee pot, the coffee at the lodge was good. We understood there were nicer rooms at higher price points; but we were happy with where we were. On cleanliness, I didn't see a problem. It just so happens I was in the military, have been around, and so my tolerance levels have been irreversibly affected. The meals were ok. I registered as an omnivore and it seems this group is subordinate to the vegetarian and vegan crowd. Some of these dishes were outside my immediate preference and so I became pleasantly surprised quite a few times. Good learning opportunity. Nice touch too with the section of fresh fruits and veggies on the side. Like others, I could go on and on. Overall, I highly recommend it! read more

Back again, Just spent a Friday to Friday here, I originally had a week a month earlier but they had two big fires and they reached out so quick to reschedule and give me future options, so the people behind the scenes were working so hard during all that! I did the self guided experience, I usually hang out in the art barn and paint. This place is magic, so many people came in to do different art, throw pots and bowls, and really inspire others. You never know what teachers will sit next to you, I brought some mini canvases and gave them out to anyone who was hanging out, i ran out after three days lol ... If the management reads this you need to get more glue sticks in there, I think esalen underestimates how many people like to do collages and cut up magazines and past it to the paper, then cut up the paper and make more art with the pieces, some lady cut up a bunch or hearts from the various magazines bins for collage supplies, pasted them together and made a heart collage, way cool. Maybe most people dont paint 10 hours a day like me but you can collage in one sitting. One day I came in looked like the racoons got in knocked over the trash, inside the trash was a epic drawing of a whale and the goldengate, it was like a lucid dream, I was going to put a whale tail and the golden gate on a oil painting i was doing! This lady was doing what i was imagining... The next day I show up after breakfast and there is another even better drawing of a whale and golden gate! So I took my seascape painting and put it next to her garbage drawing, which I would have given my next life to be able to draw, and left a note if we could collaborate! Then this goddess shows up and she was so happy to have the same drawing and she was gracious enough to enrich my painting with her whale tails and bridge, so cool. Alot of the staff and volunteers take refuge in the art barn, some are in their zone and not really want to be bothered, others are open to questions about their supplies and technique, This one nice lady Maxine was drawing mandalas and these super fine line concentric collective unconscious symbolic designs and animals, and she had this fine art pen that was really cool and inspiring, need to get that! The head chef also was outside doing art with spray cans and acrylic pro tagging pens, using tape and then pulling it off after painting over it. I come outside peek over his shoulder and its like being transported to a hallway leading to the bathrooms at a Ramons concert at CBGB, close your eyes, imagine that wall, if you know you know. He was nice enough to tell me about all his paints and again, inspiring. I could go on but the chef also needs praise for the food. I know its not always so incredible and me posting this is not something that happens all the time but I just have to say, we had a 100$ dinner one night better than anything at Nepthane or sardine factory in monterey or any 3 star tire rating set menu place in carmel- the star of the evening was perfectly roasted wild Golden Chanterelles and Salmon. Being a chanterelle forager myself I was really impressed! Infact every night they had different varieties of oysters, portabellas, all cooked differently and vegan delight! Otherwise there is always something you will like at the soup, salad, and tea/coffee buffet too lol...... My routine every day 6am dip in hotsprings Breakfast then painting till lunch After lunch painting till dinner After dinner painting till 9:30pm Hot springs till 12am Repeat the next day This week I had alot of night time and moon theme or black and white with pops of color.... Since there was a fire recently I did a Esalen from above , acrylic on canvas, with a fire in the distance! Could be the Dolan fire or a premonition to the future, seems like every 8 years there is a fire, the view is looking to the south. I also did a waning Gibbous moon oil on canvas, this was the view of the moon when I got to esalen that saturday morning as the sun was rising and the moon still visible in the indigo blue sunrise sky! I have a tropical beach night scene Black rock maui with a romantic wave and moon acrylic on canvas, this took the longest I have a quartersawn highly figured California big leaf maple wood guitar back that I painted the scene and got the collaboration with the golden gate and also the small round with the surreal fog wave and the whale tail with help from my new bestie that was in the art barn that day lol .... Each time I come here add more paintings to my esalen collection! Esalen pro tip? Get a small neck pillow for the cast iron tubs, I got to say these things would sell out at the book shop if they had them embossed with "esalen", it was so perfect, you can use it to prop up your feet too! Photo drop from our trip to Big Sur and the unparalleled beauty of Esalen. The farm and gardens were a sight to behold. Many beautiful veggies (that we enjoyed for lunch) and exotic flowers that begged for their closeups. The signature esalen massage was like no other, set in a bathhouse perched over the Pacific complete with the sound of crashing waves. And the pièce de résistance -- sunset! Absolutely loved our experience at Esalen. We'll definitely be new regulars, it's truly a rare peace. The facilities are all wonderful, on a stunning piece of land. Everyone there, the staff and attendees, are all remarkably friendly and welcoming. The food was definitely not the highlight, but that's not not why you come. Still one of my favorite retreats. I took a year and a half off from Esalen to focus another program. Now that is done. I was so happy to be back and tried a new workshop. I stayed at passage this time. It is at Murphy house right under the sea. View is still great. I was finally able to release what was stuck and got a lot of much needed rest. People here are always great. They have a new crew of folks here (didn't see many familiar faces). Food was awesome. View and the hot spring continues to be amazing. This is the place I came to be recentered. Thank you. Somehow I lost the older photos to the review after the update is posted. They are kept at the photo section at esalen here on Yelp. I enjoyed all their premium Queen suites so far with just best views. My fav is Fritz guest house, the sea unit at Murphy house. Cypress is also good. The passage at Murphy house was good too. Youre paying a lot of money to see your Instagram favs in person. And a couple ive been to I got more info off their pages- as they are solely energy vampires. Be careful who you follow. Ive been to several workshops at first i was in love with this place. But if you look at the offerings, they are really cheap. They set out organic fruit on the first days of your workshop. The rest of the days the organic stickers disappear. Huge flowing beautiful gardens and recycled food for 5 days while youre there. The chicken and veggies you eat as a main meal day one will be in all of your food all week and in your soup on day 5. The chicken is the cheapest ive ever tasted. And only if your teacher is respected there and asks for good food will you see decent food that week. We got beef one day because my teachers name is on the pool deck. Bring your own wine and snacks but beware the raccoons are 50 lbs and will follow you. The front office staff is all bad energy. You would think working there they would absorb some good vibes but you just really feel bad for how much they dont like their lives living in such a gorg place.But, with all things is it what you make it!!! Thats prob why you feel drained after you leave. Do energy breaking ties and Bring that sage! Also KEEP VALUABLES WITH YOU or in your car if you have one. Everyone is at workshops at the same time. Except staff. I definitely had someone in my room on one of my stays as a lamp I 100 didnt put on was left on when returning to the room, and noticed some shady happenings when I had to run back to my room for a jacket during a workshop. I hope they can bring the good spirits back to this place one day. For now id save your money. read more

Esalen is not what it used to be. I agree with many folks on here; it definitely doesn't appear or feel as inclusive. The food is mediocre at best now. Accommodations are very outdated. I actually wasn't feeling well after my stay here; did a test and appears that I have mycotoxins and I'm pretty sure its due to the mold in the cabins. I don't understand some of the negative reviews--although they seem to be from late 2024 so perhaps last year was not a good one. And reviews shouldn't compare the 1990's to today!! My daughter and I were staying there as a mother-daughter retreat focusing on "Nourish", a yoga workshop for the entire weekend. Esalen was quite welcoming, especially with the winning sense of humor from Weston at the Front Desk. The grounds at night are extremely dark after leaving the central Lodge, with a 15-minute walk in almost total darkness. A small keychain light is provided but was inadequate for my "senior citizen" eyes. Winston graciously drove us to our room in a golf cart. We never felt we had imposed upon him. The photos really do not do justice to this beautiful, serene, and elegant space with an understated Zen atmosphere ! Excellent service, stunningly beautiful location, gardens (including a Buddha garden), gourmet meals and well-designed rooms. Definitely will be back to Esalen and its Zen serenity! read more

I've attended and followed Esalen for years and genuinely believe in the spirit of the work. That's why this is hard to write. If you look at the website, you'll see strong language about inclusion and racial equity. But when you move from messaging to mechanics, a different picture emerges. Registration requires a 50% deposit upfront. At the lowest tier, that's about $490. For many workshops, it's $1,000+ depending on accommodations. That's due immediately. In a country with a well-documented racial wealth gap, large upfront deposits are not neutral. They disproportionately exclude people who don't have flexible cash on hand -- including many Black, Brown, Indigenous, and working-class folks. Scholarships are limited and require extensive financial disclosure. I've applied and was denied. When I recently asked if I could split the deposit into two payments, the answer was no. That's not just an inconvenience. That's a structural access issue. It's also difficult not to notice who is in the room. In many sessions, participants of color are limited. Most staff are white. Most teachers are white. For an organization that publicly centers equity language, the lived experience doesn't fully match the branding. I also reached out directly to members of the leadership team to raise these concerns. I received no response. That silence speaks volumes. Esalen offers meaningful programs. But equity isn't a value statement -- it's reflected in payment policies, hiring decisions, and who can realistically afford to say yes. If the goal is broader participation, installment options and more flexible access policies would be a straightforward place to begin. Right now, it's very clear who Esalen primarily serves and who they intend to include as part of the human potential movement. read more

This pertains to my Esalen visit Dec 19-21, 2025 as well as my prior visit two years earlier (in addition to a number of pre-COVID visits dating back to 1995).  My memory of Esalen is that it was a summer camp-like haven of personal growth and connection with the most outrageously good food and pretty good customer service (think more summer camp, less high end hotel) with incredible views and campy sleeping quarters. The epic hot baths overlooking a stunning coastline amidst the energy vortex that Esalen emanates, is one of a kind. Fast forward through a few natural disasters, mudslides, bridges taken out, COVID, and near bankruptcy, you can feel the identity crisis of Esalen oscillating between the old guard of bohemian days (which frankly I prefer) and the new guard which is trying to appeal more to new money/tech. The prices have gone up, some lodging has been improved, and a lot has been eliminated, to the point to which I don't know that I would go back to Esalen if it weren't a particular teacher or workshop drawing me there. The food used to be a bragging item. 2 years ago, the food was abysmal. The kale at dinner was presented as kale chips, but literally were burnt to a crisp. (This latest trip, the kale was steamed & bright green, so it has come around.) Plasticware replaced permanent cutlery. (Now it's a mix of both). The delicious breads that were a not to be missed item have now been replaced with standard grocery store sandwich bread that you would find at Safeway. I stayed with a friend in Carmel the night before arriving at Esalen who recommended that I bring my own bread. So I bought a bakery loaf of sourdough with me, and as I made toast in the morning, I had hoards of envious guests asking me where I got the bread. The fish chowder at lunch one day was watery and flavorless. Another lunch, salad was put out and the salad dressings were forgotten. The dressings that were served were unmemorable. Spirit Rock Meditation Center makes the most amazing homemade dressings. You looked forward to them. I recommend having a good dependable balsamic as a standard salad bar item then one or two creative dressings. And there is a big difference between store bought and homemade dressings. They don't need to be complex. The protein at dinner one night was poached fish. It was fine, but bland as all getup. Another time, my partner got up to get coffee one day and it came out of the large coffee dispenser cold! (His most memorable takeaway from Esalen.) The desserts are also a disappointment. 2 yrs ago, there either wasn't any dessert, or pre-frozen grocery store "fresh baked" cookies were served, but tasted like an afterthought. One night this last visit, the kitchen put out a few containers of frozen ice cream and sorbet with 2 scoopers, so the entire dining room had to stand in line to self-scoop very solidly frozen ice cream (so it takes a while for one person to scoop). PLEASE hire a baker and a quality chef. Good food is so important at a retreat center such as Esalen. On the positive, the cold breakfast bar is solid and a high 5 for fresh berries. And the tea bar is dependable.  Bath towels? Well, while my partner and I stayed in one of the nicer rooms on campus, there were no towels for the baths provided. At the introduction to Esalen talk, we were told that if there were no bath towels at the bathhouse, that one can walk up the steep walkway towards the highway (a 10-15 min walk), to get a towel from the guard station. Really? Even cheap hotels with pools provide pool towels at the pool. I thought this might happen so I brought my own bath towel, which I ended up using the entire weekend because every time I went to the baths, whether morning, afternoon, or night, I could not find a towel. For as expensive as Esalen is, it would behoove them to make sure towels are stocked. It feels like an ABC basic item to tend to. Side note: My massage at the bathhouse was mediocre. Our new room...was new, clean, and austere, to the point of feeling unhomy. The walls were white, no pictures, no art, no pieces of nature, no electric candle, no flowers, nothing that made the space feel welcoming. Regarding customer service, no staff ever really interacted with us to check in and say "How are you doing?" "Do you need anything?" except for the check-in desk literally checking us in at the start. My partner has an onion allergy and couldn't eat a good portion of the food at lunch or dinner our entire stay. Neither of us recalled there being a questionnaire ahead of time asking about food issues so that he could be accommodated. We felt uncared for during our stay. My partner was from Canada and I've been showing him "the best of California". He left saying that he never needed to come back to Esalen. There are many places in the world to spend money to be taken care of, to retreat. For the cost of admission, you can get much more value for your money elsewhere. read more

This establishment feels like a relic of a bygone new age movement rather than a modern retreat. I was seeking tranquility near Big Sur, and I can't help but think that camping would have been a superior choice. Tent camping would likely offer a cleaner experience, even with basic camp showers. I expected a certain standard of cleanliness, instead, I encountered dirtiness and an unpleasant odor. The atmosphere is outdated and lacks any sense of charm, not to mention the high prices. While the food was passable, I couldn't shake the concern about kitchen hygiene, especially since my table was littered with crumbs. The staff seemed unfriendly, which I can understand if they feel stuck in a negative environment. I recommend immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Big Sur, but for accommodations, look elsewhere. I've discovered far superior spas in Malibu that offer a much more enjoyable experience, free from the 1970s vibe of dippy hippies that permeates this place. read more

My week at Esalen was blissful. I was looking for a retreat for some healing and restoration, and that's what I got here at Esalen. Firstly, the grounds are absolutely magical. The drive down from the Bay Area is stunning, and the view from the main center is gorgeous, with rocky cliffs going down to the beach (ohh the sunsets!). I signed up for a workshop, which I quickly realized wasn't the right fit for me. It didn't matter, there were many self-guided classes I could take throughout the week. I spent my time with yoga, mediation, qi gong, dance, and arts. Of course, I also partook in the hot tubs and got a legendary massage (their own proprietary method). It was nothing less than transformative. I would be remiss to not mention the food. Every single meal was delicious. There were plentiful vegetarian/vegan and gluten free options. Much of the food comes from their own garden, and the freshness is obvious. If you're looking to have a spiritual experience or simply spend some time in nature, this is the place for you. read more

My visit to Easalen on May 4th of this year was greatly overshadowed by the treatment my Indigenous/African American friend received on property. When we drove in I greatly assured her that this place would be progressive and spiritual and therefore welcoming of people of color and LGBTQ friendly. According to their premise, Easalen claims to be on the cutting edge of consciousness exploration and social progressiveness. However, after arriving there, each, with our day passes for massage, we found ourselves rushing to get me to my scheduled massage on time.-- My friend was to follow with getting hers from the same practitioner which left her heading to get lunch in the dining room. However, after only a few minutes in the lunch line, a man approached her out of everyone else there and inquired as to why she was there. (It is important to note that no one else looked like her. ) She told him that she had a daypass. He pressed on to ask for which workshop? At this point she was losing precious time before the kitchen closed but in attempting to keep with her hopeful optimism, she asked him which workshop was he attending thinking perhaps he was asking out of an attempt to socialize with a potential peer. Quickly he mumbled that he was on staff there and instructed her as if somehow he just happen to know she was a newcomer, where the utensils were for the jam and he quickly disappeared. My friend hadn't even been on property for 5 minutes before this happened. Upon settling in further she could not find one other newcomer who had been approached in the same way. All of THEM were of course white and appeared straight looking. When we met up at the massage room I knew something was wrong. We tried to make the most of our stay but couldn't shake the feeling of her being seen as "other" and a threat who had tried to sneak in to get free food, and we left shortly after dinner. The blatant difference in treatment of her, Indigenous/Black and queer, verses me being European white was obvious. No one followed me or checked on me etc. I called and complained once I was back in the Bay Area and was told that I had a phone meeting scheduled with the head of guest services. She having been informed about the nature of my concern, no-showed. We submitted seperate letters outlining the incident and, again, NO response! It is incomprehensible for me to identify one's institution as being a spiritual organization open and embracing all while promoting discriminatory practices AND have no accountability when called on such profiling and thus, inappropriate behavior. I must conclude that their values have shifted and that they prioritize whiteness, money and corporate practices now. But they also go out of their way now to NOT go out of their way when called out on their hypocrisy in regards to what they proclaim vereses what they actually practice. It sure is a far cry from the visionary icon of healing, consciousness awakening, socially accepting and free spirited institution it was once revered for. However, in these dark, dangerous & perilous times, they seem unconcerned with experiencing any repercussions for their discriminatory practices as their motto seems to be to simply ignore any complaints as they will simply go away. read more

Where to even begin. I had some doubts about coming here, but now all I can think about is when I can come back. The drive in was beautiful. We stopped at Nepenthe for lunch, highly recommend. The guard at the gate was helpful, the gals at the front desk were friendly, the map and info to get to our room was very straight forward. The grounds are breath taking. We enjoyed every meal and were delighted at the options, and the variability of the food. All the staff we interacted with were lovely, but JJ is really a stand out. I wish I could thank him again. We enjoyed the hot springs, our room was comfortable and clean, the guided activities were enriching, and the openness of the facilities was very appreciated. Mystical magical incredible energy. Beings come here to relax, rejuvenate, and self-actualize. It's easy here. You are free to be yourself. It is soft, light, and tranquil. Spent the early morning in an 80 degrees F mineral hot spring bath, while breathing in the cool Pacific Ocean mist situated on the edge of a rocky cliff with a clear view of the endless blue sparkles while hearing the soft roaring waves crash against the rocky shore. Esalen is also known for their messages, which is a unique experience, also situated along the cliffside while you listen to crashing of the rhythmic waves against the rocky shore. Many workshops to choose from. Food options at every meal are fresh and flavorful. Produce are cultivated on the 150 acre sacred land. WiFi located in the dining room is open 24/7. If you are over worked, burnt out, need to recharge and reconnect to nature, to yourself and the universe, you've found the spot. You are a sponge absorbing every beauty around you with ALL your senses. read more

Not inclusive at all. Occupied indigenous burial grounds of displaced Essalen tribe. Transformative for only the physically enabled. Not ADA compliant. I was told I could choose not to come if I had to bring service dog. After that was worked through, it got worse. Kitchen staff told me that I had to eat outside with my service dog and asked me to change my leash. This was 2 days before a bomb cyclone atmospheric river that I was told to sit outside. To boot, I was reminded to grab provisions in case the creek flooded and I couldn't make it to the main lodge from my ADA room. No service animals allowed in many places including by the hot springs or pool. If it were up to them, i was there just for 6 day/week labor and no use of the facilities. That is, unless you're obscenely wealthy or famous, then it's carte blanche, no barriers. I was also isolated from the entire cohort, in an "ADA" room that that I tripped getting to. Ramp went to the front door, my room entrance was on a raised wood deck in the back. Access obstacles include prickly palms, succulents, rocks and poison oak via unpaved paths. I bought my own garbage bags, soap, shampoo and cleaning supplies after difficulty finding items to clean the room. Staff guarded cleaning supplies, I borrowed toilet brush & supplies overnight to return by 930 am (just over 12 hrs on thanksgiving.) No trust as I was awoken by their designated messenger reminding me of such. I was so micromanaged that I was told to pick up dog poop while it was still steaming hot and I was REACHING for the bag. This room also more than doubled the walking distance to the assigned classroom. Uphill! No receptacle for dog waste, I was told to walk up the hill to the dumpster to dispose. Up the hill again. I was stopped numerous times by staff inquiring if I signed the "pet contract." It was retraumatizing explaining my night terrors due to sexual assault by a fire chief. Over and over again asked probing questions. And varmits aka raccoons everywhere. I mean 10+ each night. Strolling on the outside deck to get nightly scraps. Read the other review about 10+ raccoons scaring another guest. $62 water bottle! $190 sweatshirts. Accidentky forgot the bottle in class, of course it was never returned to lost and found. Not enjoyable at all. Unbelievably expensive for land that should be returned to the Esalen tribe. Maybe a tribe representative on the board? work 6 days a week after we paid 3k? read more

It's quite obvious that this place needs to hire a whole new group of people that actually care about maintaining Esalen's legacy and history. The staff here exude an "higher than thou" attitude which is a slap in the face when you consider the mission and philosophy. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have wrote a review had it not been for the rude staff. It was bad enough that the food is all the same, the lines were oddly long (unlike past experiences), and the facilities were dirty. But after MANY of us guests in the cafeteria stood in line for upwards of 20 mins, one of the massage clinicians waltzed to the very front of the line, and cut absolutely everyone who had been standing there. It took me some time to find her name, which is Ashley Keith. She did not ask permission, she did not say excuse me. She literally walked in front of a group, cut them off, THEN turned around and said "I need to get ahead I have a massage soon." And it was absolutely appalling. So classless and graceless the encounter has stuck with me months following my trip. I wonder why her poor time management and sense of urgency was somehow everyone behind her's problem? It is hard to take this place seriously when there are the folks they have propped up on a pedestal. read more

This is not an ashram, so don't expect a vigorous program schedule. It's a institute that takes from many different disciplines. They do offer workshops but also offer self guided experiences. I did a self guided experience. I enjoyed it immensely. The food is delicious (farm to table), the housing is great. They are known for their natural hot springs, This is absolutely an amazing experience! (Warning that it's clothing optional in the baths/pool but most will be nude). They also offer massages which was simply amazing. I definitely will be coming back here yearly. read more

I spent a relaxing weekend here and it was worth it for me. I attended the workshops, enjoyed the mineral baths and ate healthy food which is included with the room charge. People come here solo or coupled up. I met a few friends looking for spiritual growth and enjoyed yoga and art together. I chose a private, basic room but had a wonderful view of the ocean, it was definitely worth the splurge. I will come back again in the future and recommend this place to anyone looking for spiritual growth and transformation. I'm grateful for opportunity to spend time at such a special place. read more

The shower on the top floor behind the extra large pool has worms, be careful. Also I wanted to use that tub but there was obviously semen in it from a prior guest, but from my understanding ejaculation is not allowed in the pools. Some of the visitors are just disrespectful and there seems to be a cleanliness issue at least in some of the more secluded areas like that big pool. Please clean out the worms and put a form for submission requests for cleanings - make them anonymous so people actually use them. The kitchen staff was really amazing and kind. Treat them more kindly please. There are some angry spirits on the premises, specifically where the Native American totem for the Essalen tribe. The spirits there suck your energy and you will appear aged by like 10 years if you visit that area and don't leave an offering. I didn't and so I experienced this. There is a mirror there but no warning of the spiritual danger in that area. If you want to use any of the hanging swings bring a large blanket to cover them because they are often moist, dirty and covered in bugs. Please clean these at least weekly. Everytime I visited I encounter some sort of dark spirit. The space is beautiful but you should have your full spiritual guard up in order to enjoy. Oh hi. If you've never heard of Esalen, please let me pop your cherry. Esalen is a Big Sur oasis nestled in the cliffs above the Pacific ocean. And when I say "above the ocean," I literally mean that there is nothing obstructing your view of the water from any place on this property. It is very private, very expensive, and very exclusive. Typically you can only stay here if you are taking a woo-woo workshop. But, because of Covid, they are permitting small numbers of people to go and stay on the property without signing up for anything. Buyer beware, however: this is NOT a luxury resort. Accommodations are very sparse. You will get a room with cold tile floors, two small beds, two lights, and nothing else. There is no Wi-Fi anywhere on the property except for the main dining hall. Nothing to complain about if you're someone who appreciates simplicity and doesn't mind doing without fancy adornments. All you need is access to the Hot Springs, which come with the (exorbitant) price of the room. In the Before Times, Esalen was also known for its food - which used to be plentiful and delicious, with many different menu options, a bread bar, a salad bar, and a dessert bar. Despite the fact that the cost is the SAME (head exploding), you get unremarkable, small, pre-packaged meals in plastic containers. It is totally understandable that food options would be more limited due to Covid; at the same time, you would expect them to knock a significant amount off the price. However. The Hot Springs are absolutely astounding. Couples can sign up to share a large bath, or you can bathe alone in a smaller bath. The water comes directly from the thermal hot springs running underground throughout Big Sur, and you can adjust your tub temperature with a cold hose. Warning for the self-conscious: clothing is optional, and most bathers are naked. If you are ogling or staring, you will be kicked out (and thank God for that). I have been to Esalen probably ten times since the 90's. But this was my first trip back in 7-8 years. i hate to say it, but he soul is being sucked out of this amazing property... It has a feel of having been commercialized, with, for instance, a total lack of flexibility in booking dates for 'personal retreats', outrageous pricing, indifferent staffing, concrete has replaced many natural pathways. Additionally, the staff is unaccommodating, the rooms are barren with concrete floors (we stayed in Maslow, one of the pricer rooms); the worst was the lack of cleanliness. The shower was grimy and slimy, the floorboards and sills caked with dust. Our balcony had an 6-8" pile of bird droppings, also splattered on the windows and the chairs, clearly from an old nest that had been there a long time. When we asked that it be cleaned up, we received a shrug, 'It is only nature', as well as 'there is no one to attend to it now." The next day we went and asked again volunteering to clean it ourselves if they would provide the cleaning materials, no go...By late afternoon someone indeed had come to clean it up. But still! Anyway, we were there 5 days, by the 3rd day I started to come down with for me, rare GI symptoms, which became much worse on my return home until I needed to take antibiotics to clear up the infection. (Was it the waters, the produce, the food? A coincidence? ) On the plus side, they have planted succulents which have enhanced the landscaping.The one morning yoga I attended was well taught. The ocean and sky and magic of the location are five star, and are almost worth the one-star downsides. But for me, this will be my last time going there. read more

For me, this was a life-changing experience. I have wanted to come here for decades. I never seemed to have the time or the money at the same time. Thankfully, I finally managed to go. Better now than never! A workshop entitled "Cultivating Authentic Happiness" by www.Iraisrael.com sealed the deal. Hearing the waves crash against the rocky Pacific Coast while relaxing in the hot mineral baths was hypnotically tranquilizing. The food was well thought out with harmonizing choices for vegans and omnivores alike. I enjoyed crossing over to try out vegan dishes that were so expertly prepared. I seriously couldn't tell the difference between the real eggs and the vegan ones, thanks to "Simply Eggs". I was happy to find outstanding coffee there and even an interesting selection of great wine in the evenings. I was surprised to read some of the other reviews that pointed out the accommodations were disappointing. I was quite satisfied with my basic double room choice. It was clean and appropriately minimalistic with what I assumed was organic bed and bedding that I never wanted to leave. Esalen has gone from being a positive place of hope to being hopelessly "woke". We were looking to book the November Koren Brothers workshop "The Healing Voice" for our 17 member professional songwriting group but, upon reading their tyrannical requirements to even get on the property we discussed it and unanimously decided nope....We'll do our own in Cambria instead. I took classes here many many moon ago and recided there for a while. I was assigned to kitchen duties, cooking (they found out I could cook), gardening, cleaning etc. Back then the place was kept immaculate and it was an equal shared effort that each individual was proud off. Back in those days it earned 10 stars. Today, ive had many clients and friends I recommended and they left early. Last time Imy husband and I visited I seriously got emotional. The rooms were filthy. Employees had NO desire to help anyone and if you asked they made sure you sew them rolling their eyes. Dirty plates with food left on the tables outside and critters eating out of them. Naked guess and employees getting to close to feel comfortable (please get a room) the food was disappointing and everyone was complaining. One guess took her plate and told the kitchen she'd show them how to cook. Anyway, this was years ago and I'm surprised I still have enough memory to share this. I would never go back even if wasn't on my way out. I'm so so sorry for Esalen Institute and Hot Springs because they use to be fantastic and Number 1. Bad management will definitely kill a place. Ohhhh one piece of advice, I can not remember her name but she use to answer the phones and book rooms etc. NO NO NO I hope she has retired by now. Never have I dealt with such rude %^& person. Omg this place is literally magical. My husband and I did the middle of the night hot spring soak. You can hear the waves crashing below and see the moon and stars above you. The experience was worth every penny. The raccoons came down the hill and got a little crazy on another lady there- just beware haha but what can you expect when you're out in nature. My first visits to Esalen were in the early 80s. In those days I was a psych student, and searching experiences. I found it a surreal, magical place, in the spiritual and sensual sense. Esalen was unique considered by many to be one of the "power energy centers" akin to Stonehedge and the like. My recent updating on Esalen, indicates some modernizations, like Wi-Fi, which to me seem out of place from the spiritual ( not meaning religious ) energy perspective. Esalen is absolutely beautiful. It's on the California coast near Big Sur. Here's 10 things you need to know. 1. Bring warm clothes. The weather can change in an instant and you don't want to get cold! 2. The food is good. It's not great but it's certainly not bad. Lots of fresh vegetables, that are crunchy. The food is probably spectacular when we aren't in a pandemic. 3. Book your hot springs bath a week before you go. Yes, you want to soak in a hot springs tub that hangs off a cliff! Book your massage too! 4. Pay the extra money and go to a workshop. The speaker may not be great but It's a great way to make new friends. 5. The bookstore does NOT carry a wide selection of toiletries and snacks. Prepare wisely. 6. Staff is friendly and helpful. 7. There are steep hills and stairs. Bring your walking shoes. Sometimes I use a walking stick and I could manage The terrain. 8. Bring a blanket so that you can relax on the grass and watch the ocean. 9. Cell phone service is almost non-existent. I liked the break! 10. The room was nice and over looked the ocean. You get a comfy bed, hot shower and place to put your clothes. No coffee maker, tv, phone or hair dryer. The trade off? The ocean. For example, the shower and faucets in our bathroom was falling off the wall. Also, for the weekend we stayed, Esalen forced us to enroll in a workshop, which was expensive and not that interesting. We bailed on the workshop, and so did scores of others. Esalen would be better served by making the workshops an option. The staff is largely worthless. HOT SPRINGS!!!!!! But before I go on... Esalen is an institute that promotes self-discovery and personal growth. Their seminars, workshops, and programs are for Big Sur residents. Their hot springs though, is open to the public from 1am to 3am. Yes, late. $20 per guest. Reservations only. The hot springs area is located by the cliff next to the ocean. What a magnificent view! The facility is beautiful. Large changing room and shower room that overlooks the ocean. The tubs are out on the patio; large tubs for sharing and small private tubs. This will be a good time to mention that its clothing optional. You may think now, naked people + hot tubs = orgy or something of the sort. But sorry to disappoint, there is no alcohol allowed and noise is to be kept to a minimal level. I think the idea is to forget that there are people around you and be comfortable in your own skin. There are no lights in the tub area. Only moonlight, if the night permits. This allows one of a kind experience, where you submerge yourself in total relaxation, gaze at stars and listen to waves as they crash along the shore. Personally, the experience was not entirely without discomfort since I'm quite self-conscious. But with those feelings aside, it was truly a unique, serene and relaxing experience. OCEAN CLIFF setting,- sunsets, whales, seals, dolphins, crashing waves, negative ions. GARDENS- Green gorgeous grass, trails, trees, flowers, succulents, super fresh vegetables. NOURISHMENT - Love to eat here, everything tastes so fresh, healthy, & alive, Can't seem to drink enough water. Cafeteria style, picnic tables with benches, great way to meet or not. You can bring your own alcohol and enjoy in the enclosed "bar" area. They also have wine for purchase. HOT TUBS- choice of; indoor, outdoor, covered, exposed, large, small, group or single bath tubs, hot or cold. The BATH HOUSE showers - talk about a view. CONVERSATIONS - People from around the globe are attracted to this special place. Depending on which workshops are occurring at that time, will draw people from certain industries. Limited Wifi window times in the lodge and no cell activity!!! WORKSHOPS -you name it, check out their catalogue. Something for everyone. SUN BATHING on the deck, walking, hiking, swimming, MASSAGE, yoga, meditation, dance, SOAKING 24 hours in a NATURAL MINERAL HOT SPRINGS. PERSONAL RETREATS - Do whatever you want, sleep late, visit Deetjen's for breakfast, great coffee and the most amazing Benedicts. Hang in town, visit the Maiden Publick house for good beer, and gift shops. Shop The Phoenix, enjoy views at Nepenthe, appetizers at Ventanna on the patio, Sierra Mar at Post Ranch for dinner and a killer view. PROBLEMATIC- Reservations, online or by phone, it is very difficult to find someone to help you make your reservation. 3 visits ago a cashmere sweater was taken from our workshop and shoes from the bathhouse! Seriously, you try walking up that hill barefooted on a cold night. Parking - good luck if you stay out late. Rooms do need to be updated, so get over it. You won't be spending a lot of time there except to sleep. What are you expecting? This is not a business. Look at how many people are work study positions. It is not for profit. Leave your ego at home. It is what it is. Soak in the tubs, it will take the fight out of you, and you sleep like a baby. I really love this place for it's uniqueness. This review is for their relaxing and therapeutic late night spa that runs from 1-3AM daily. I knew I was in for a treat, but I did not know just how big of a treat it was going to be. The drive to Big Sur was soothing in itself, the famous highway 1 roads are windy but not too much that it feels dangerous or strenuous at night, and you have a view of the moon reflecting off of the calm ocean waters of the Pacific throughout the entire ride. Once we arrived at Esalen, around 12:45, a guide came to take us down to the spas (~5min walk), gave us some basic information and let us roam around. There are two sides of the spas (the quiet side and the silent side): Quiet Side: This is the area to go to if you want to immerse yourself in warm and soothing sulfur spring waters under the star-filled night sky while listening to the calming ocean waves splash around the beach underneath you. The sky is so clear that you have a picture-esque view of the milky way and the air is so crisp that you cannot help but let go and relax. Just like the description says, this is the area where you should be quiet, meaning you can talk softly among each other. There are also several smaller spa and bath tubs where you can go to for a more personal feel as well as massage tables for any couples or even if you just want to lay down. This was my favorite side as the silent side is entirely indoors. Silent Side: This area is a talking-free zone, it's a space where you can go if you want to meditate or just rest in complete silence. It is a great place to go to to relax however it's indoors so you do not have the view of the midnight sky nor the soothing sounds of the ocean waves. But to each his own, I'd still recommend going here at some point during your stay. They do have towels in the changing area and they also have a water fountain for when you get thirsty but the water fountain is quite old so I'd recommend bringing your own water (preferably a cold one) to put in the locker room (outside food/drinks prohibited) so you can hydrate throughout the night (after being in the spa for so long, a nice cold one feels amazing...) This is an incredibly relaxing experience which heals the soul. It is an incredible place to go with friends, on a date, or even just by yourself. Reservations are hard to come by so be diligent, it's so well worth it. The drive back home (bay area) was a little harsh, (thank you Pat for driving), so getting a hotel or airbnb wouldn't be a bad idea at all. highly recommended and will definitely be a repeat customer! read more

Magical, epic place to drop in to yourself. Transformational. I was just there on a day pass and decided to review after reading the other reviews with negative comments. The guests I ate with were returning guests - up to 3x returning and every one remarked on the quality of the workshops and the transformational experiences they had. Taking a break from screens was the best. I met people. I reflected on the importance of community and talking with people with different viewpoints. I need more of this in my life. The history here is superb - just go on You Tube to go deeper into that. The main building has wifi and super delicious vegan (and non) foods created from the gardens. Whatever will I do at home without fresh flowers on my food? I'm spoiled forever, lol. The baths did wonders to my body pains. Really. So amazing. The workshop attendees were intelligent and provided an enlivened community ...sure Alan Watts isn't here anymore (duh), but the spirit of the place lives on in a contemporary context. Esalen meets us where we are at. Insights, transformation, and expansion are plausible. It's a great place to dream up where you are headed next. The vibes of energy work, genuine compassion, movement arts, freedom of expression and being, positivity.... it's all here. I couldn't ask for more and I can not wait to return! read more

I don't think this place has changed much in the last few decades. The dated look of the website, which lacks the bells and whistles of a slicker, modern and cooler page, makes a lot more sense when you arrive. We signed up for the offsite guest massage, and when we arrived the lady manning the security booth let us in somewhat reluctantly. Possibly offsite guests are a necessary evil to offset the cost of the more holistic yogis seeking the path of enlightenment. Either way there was a serious lack of instruction and we trundled off to what looked like the massage and spa area. No one knew where we were supposed to get our towels but a nice worker took pity on us. Towels are apparently a luxury item there. The default setting here is nude co-ed. There is no private changing area which I guess makes sense, since you will be mingling naked in the hot tubs. We were the only one in bathing suits which stuck out like a sore thumb. We were also the least in shape so I feel we should get a pass. The massage was so. good. You are in a peaceful room with a few other tables of patrons getting massages, there is a glass wall that allows you to overlook the waters. Afterwards we took advantage of the one hour gratis in the hot tubs. But honestly - there were no clocks and did not seem to be a lot of staff so if you stayed longer I don't think anyone would notice. Stewing in the baths while watching the waves crash up to the coast after a nice massage is incredibly therapeutic! The only odd part was the woman who brought her kid, about 5 years old. He starting wailing and screaming at one point. I wouldn't consider this a child friendly venue and it ruined a bit of the relaxing moment. Afterwards we walked the grounds...which we probably weren't supposed to since we weren't staying there...but if you can sneak away the scenery is worth it! read more
