This is the best camp by far! All of the classes are engaging for all ages. We will definitely be back next year.

We also had our son taking the city bus to Cuesta, which added to his sense of independence.

It was the first time we were here, and from the description online I thought this would be a hands-on class, where you learn new kitchen skills and prepare meals with a chef's instruction. This is NOT what these classes are! You come in and sit around the bar looking into an open kitchen environment where volunteers prepare the meals for you. Adjusting our expectations quickly, we still had a lot of fun at this dining event. We received the recipes for the eight or so dishes that were presented during the class, our favorites were the seared salmon with Miso honey sauce, shrimp and basil stir fry, stuffed tomatoes with goat cheese and zucchini, skillet tortellini with crispy prosciutto and spring vegetables, pan-roasted filets mignon with asparagus and the strawberry rhubarb crumble. You can bring your own wine, too. Chef Debbie narrates all dishes, provides tips on what to look out for when you're shopping for ingredients and gives instruction to the volunteers that so all the prepping, cooking and cleaning. I wish Debbie would use a microphone, as she mostly sat on the other side of the bar, and we had a hard time hearing her sometimes. When dishes are ready, they are passed down the bar in huge serving dishes, so you can take as little or as much as you like of each of the dishes. I would recommend the meals are put in smaller serving bowls/platters and multiple are being passed to the attendees. When you're at the end of the line, you might otherwise not get much of the food, or you're left with scraps. The serving platters were way to big, and uncomfortable to pass around. Also, please get tongs to make it easier to pass out the food - especially the pasta or asparagus. All in all a fun date night, we were full with delicious food and received some great tips during the night. Would I go again for $75 per person? Unlikely, I really missed hands-on instruction, and think it's too pricey for us to do on a regular basis.

Where to start …read more.. This fabulous, outdoor summer camp made my kids (ages 8 and 10) so happy. They were excited at pick up every day - pleasantly exhausted and energized at the same time. Debbie has the amazing ability to translate what adults would find tiring into an imaginative forum for creation and collaborative play. Her soothing, calm voice is like a warm hug for those who are a little timid to start their day away from mom/dad/grandma. The program for the week my children attended included: creating their own business - from building, to items/services sold/offered, to creating a communal currency; surfing sand dunes; fun with flour, camp fire cooking (then selling); and more. The kids were engaged all week, making blueprints at home for their construction and ironing out menu items and pricing for their big sale. And ... IT'S ALL OUTDOORS! In the sun! In the fresh air! In a wide open pasture! I live in Los Angeles - there is nothing like this in LA. What a treat to get out of the city for a week and have your kids be outside, engaged, and happy! Speaking of location ... if you live outside of SLO, don't let that stop you from participating. There are great places to stay in SLO (or Morro Bay) -both inns/motels and home rentals. While the kids are away for the day, you can have a little vacation time for you with activities like: Hearst Castle, wine tasting in Paso Robles, visit Avila Valley Farms for some amazing produce (and feed their adorable goats), and downtown SLO has great walking.
