But we arrive at 1pm on the dot, in a quaint residential neighbourhood, just across the busy highway from Centocelle. Pro Loco Dol started out as a delicatessen on Via Domenico Panaroli about 8 years ago, with a specific aim in mind: to sell the best deli produce from all over the Lazio region. The shop developed a certain cachet for its exquisite cheeses and salamis, with top-class hams and other cold-cuts from the region making cynics sit up and re-evaluate Lazio produce. About two and a half years ago, they moved to bigger premises down the road, and added around 25 tables, introducing an imaginative menu which starts with cheeses and cold cuts, roams through wonderful hand-made pasta and thoughtful meat second courses, whilst also serving traditional and gourmet pizzas (pizzas only at night). We started with a selection of "Lazio rarities" to share, at €12. (The "ordinary" cheese and salami selection costs €8). 4 types of cheese and 4 hams / salamis, including prosciutto di Bassiano and a salami cured with orange peel. The cheeses, ranging from provola to a kind of gorgonzola, run from delicate to striking - superb. Then I order the ravioli filled with ricotta, tossed with fried artichokes in a carbonara sauce. It all comes together beautifully, and isn't overblown or filling - €12). My dining companion chooses the Dolpettone, house meatballs filled with cheese and served in a tomato sauce - €8). The €4 vegetable sides are a delight: white cabbage salad with apple and orange, and red Swiss chard fried with tomatoes. We share a "quartino" of wine (250 ml) and drink distilled water. We are offered miniature black cherry tarts on the house. Throughout the meal, we've been lucky: the restaurant hasn't been full, so the waiter has taken ample time to explain all the ingredients and answer all our questions about this marvellous place. The bill is a extremely reasonable €19 each. I'll be coming back one evening to try the pizzas - I only wish it was a little closer to home! What a treat.

Each of the sandwiches are priced at around $3.50 to $5.50 euros. Possibly a little more expensive than some other delis considering the size but you pay for the quality and freshness of ingredients. Even though the thin subs are a little small, one was still enough to fill me up for a light lunch. All of the combinations sounded delicious. They also have a juicer and offer fresh juices with your choice of ingredients for 4 euros. There was also a list of salads and an opportunity to design your own salad as well. I like mustard and, therefore, liked this specialty much more than my wife, but we ended up ignoring portions of the so-so bun. Pane & Vino Special Porchetta (12€ - 4 stars) was a huge sandwich with the sliced Roast Pork Porchetta plus Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Peppers, Mushrooms, Lettuce, and Mayo on classic Italian Pane. It needed more mayonnaise or a sprinkle of balsamic and olive oil for my tastes, but there was no denying it was a hearty hero. There are lots of pane bread and sandwich shops in Rome, but there is only one -- Pane & Vino -- run by the most welcoming of owners ever. This Conad was one of many grocery stores my boyfriend and I came for water and basic groceries to keep our travels affordable. The store was organized and service was no frills. In addition to the water we initially came in for I also picked up some Conad brand pineapple juice and an affordable asparagus omelet from their hot items area. It served its' purpose for our needs. The items we bought were super affordable and it prepared us well for the next morning so we could quickly eat and get on with the day for our early morning attractions.

Not just an option of removing meat and cheese, but they make their own vegan deli meat and vegan cheese. Inside is very small and 2 people were already occupying the only seats, so I ate on a bench just down the street. Wow, this sandwich was so good!
