SOLID USED CAR DEALER!!! I was in the hunt for a car with manual transmission to teach my youngbloods the art of The Stick Shift. Yup, it's becoming a lost skill, with most new cars not even having an option for driving stick. So before they become extinct, let's drop some knowledge on these Boyz! Now where do I find one?!?! I decided to use CarGurus and AutoTrader phone apps as my primary search options. Looked at and test drove a bunch of options... Hyundai Veloster, Mazda M3, Toyota Matrix, Kia Soul, and Honda Element. Definitely nothing extravagant. Problem with used cars is finding cars with minimal issues. Look for good price but how much work will it need AFTER you buy it?? And used car dealers, are they keen on customer service? Most are not and have definitely met some rude ones during our search too. So our quest took us to ERNIE'S AUTO SALES in Chula Vista, because a car they Listed on CarGurus looked appealing. Being that it would be a bit of a drive for us, we needed to call ahead to get some details. Here, someone actually answered the phone promptly. THANK YOU! We spoke with Mr. Mario over the phone. "How's this? How's that? Blah, blah, blah". Not once once did he sound irritated, very respectful throughout. Told us "this is a good car, 9/10. And I've been in this business a long time!" Well sure enough, he was spot on, when we came to peep things out. Friendly greeting and cordial interaction the whole time. We wanted the car, and Mr. Mario and Mr. Ernie were both reasonable chaps as we worked the details out with them. No after market nonsense added in. Nice thing is that they wanted make sure everything was up to snuff before We drove it off. So we had to come back a few days later. They kept their word on everything they said. There was even a warranty offered with our car and when we found a few issues, the warranty was honored without issue. I COULD NOT BE ANY HAPPIER the way this experience went. Thank you Gentlemen! Wanted to share my experience of buying a used car from this dealership. First I want to point out the quality of cars on Ernie's lot is different then most. Very nice looking cars and cars look like the pictures that are posted online. Now for sale rep, Mario was great he was listening to all of our concerns and questions and explaining everything in detail. There was no hidden issues later down the line of the sale it was all up front and just very presentable. The day my family and I picked up the truck Ernie help us with our paperwork and during the process he made my husband feel real comfortable with the decision we were making. I know to some people that doesnt matter but to us it does. We were made to feel like family and not a stranger. That goes along way for us. I have to say this place started off really well. I have always been skeptical of any business that deals with cars but I decided to give it a shot because my Brother in Law recommended the place. We bought a truck from here around June of 2013 and have had nothing but problems with it from the start. The customer service went from great to (no-where) to be found as soon as the 1 month was up, which I understand that is business I have no issues with that. The first day we get the truck back it won't start in the morning. We call and they have me jump it and I take it down the day after I bought the truck and fix the battery. They said it was a bad battery cell. About 2 weeks in the truck won't start again. We call they seemed frustrated and not willing to help so I call a friend and we fix the problem. The problem this time is a bad car alarm that shut the truck down. At this point I'm frustrated but not mad because the truck is running and I'm able to get to work. 1 month (4 weeks) of having the truck all of a sudden my brakes start grinding, which is odd because I just bought the truck 1 month ago. Of course I call and of course they say sorry 1 month is up your own. I take it to a friend's brake shop (Discount Tires) who tells me all the brakes and rotors are done and there all going to have to be replaced. Now I understand that this is my fault and I should have had the truck inspected but of course it would be nice if the car dealership would have inspected the truck and had none that the brakes were completely horrible and were going to have to be replaced. This job cost me over $700 because they were so bad. Once again I understand this is my fault and I should have taken the responsibility to check it myself but it would be nice to know I'm getting (not new) but good brakes with a purchase of a car. Now going on to why I write this review I have had the truck now for 3 months and it would not start at work I had to have it towed and there still looking into what's wrong with it. Once again I know this does not fall on the Ernie's Auto Sales but I called just to see asked what I should do and the Mechanic (who answers the phone 75% of the time I have ever called there) told me its past the 1 month there is nothing they can do and that it sucked. I wasn't looking for them to fix it but I guess with all the struggles I have had with the truck and my assurance from the owner when I bought the truck that he would make sure that you are in a good vehicle because my name is on it....just never came to pass. The owner is a nice Christian man very caring and very genuine when it comes to his faith but it does not translate over to his business skills and integrity of his business in selling cars. I would think twice before going here it seems to be a get you in and out business. I went in skeptical and my hopes were brought up by the character of the owner but in the end my fears were confirmed by bad business skills, poor customer service and a horrible product. read more

I have known of Ernie's Auto Sales since it's opening in 1999. Besides the purchase of a Corsica back in the day, my family and friends have been purchasing quality cars from Ernie's Auto Sales very frequently. When we purchased the Corsica, the staff and Ernie were easy to speak with and were very willing to answer questions regarding the vehicle. There was no pressure to purchase and I felt that Ernie never tried to push us into a car that was unreasonable for our family budget and our driving needs. The Corsica was perfect for getting to and from school and never had a problem. As for family members, I know of many who have purchased cars from Ernie's Auto Sales. I believe the most recent was by my aunt, with a purchase of a Ford Explorer. Several cousins and friends have made purchases and I have never heard of any problems with the vehicles, the staff, or the way business is conducted. We just had the worst experience with Ernie's Auto Sales!!! SO! This past weekend we went to go see Ernie because he was the only used car dealer in the area with the car my friend wanted. She wanted a manual, low miles, newer car that is a gas saver. Very hard to find these days BUT Ernie had one. Once at the lot we met Ernie and he seemed like such a nice guy and that he was going to do his best to get my friend in this car. Once he looked up all of her info and started the process of putting her in her dream car everything came to a halt with the bank. He told us its not a problem and they tend to be this way on the weekends. He said and I quote, "Come back on Monday and we'll get you in this car, worst case scenario your payments will be $250." GREAT! We planned to be back on Monday to get her dream car. Monday comes and we call Ernie to see if the bank got back to him. He says, "I'm on it, I'll give you a call as soon as I hear something back from them." Once the morning was over we called at 12:30... Ernie was out to lunch... Then we called at 1:15.... Ernie was with a customer.... Then we called at 2:30.... Please have Ernie call us back ASAP.... No call from Ernie. Me being the friend that I am called back a final time to ask, as if I was a new customer, do you have a car like the one I described earlier? And FINALLY I hear Ernie's voice! He tells me, "I just sold one of those but I can let you know if I get something like that again." I declined to leave my info and told my friend the sad news. After all that he had said it turns out Ernie is just like every other car salesmen. Untrustworthy! Not once did I feel any pressure to buy. They know what they have and know the prices they have are very good and will sell..its all who gets there first to look at the vehicle is the way I felt. Just purchased my 8th vehicle from Ernie's, Ernie has always stood by his vehicles even after the warranty is up. One of the past vehicle's I purchased from Ernie's (2 yrs prior) was having electrical problems, so I contacted Ernie to recommend a mechanic. Ernie had me bring my vehicle in, and had his lit mechanic check it out, then sent me to one of the local shop's that he'd done business with for years. The shop took care of the problem, charged me a very fair price and I was back on the road in no time. That's just one of the reasons why I called Ernie for the 7th time, when I was in the market for another vehicle.
