I have NEVER written a yelp review for a Dr. but I wanted to share the experience I had with Dr. Millstein and his entire staff. I unfortunately slipped and fractured 2 bones in my leg. Having never had anything more than a paper cut in all my life I was terrified. I could not have been referred to a better Dr. !!! From my first visit, Dr. Millstein was personable and patient as he SAT and walked me through the x-ray of my leg, explaining the bone(s) I fractured, how they "work", what the recovery process would look like and even the symptoms I might have as I recovered. Without knowing it, this is exactly what I needed...details. He didn't try to rush the healing process but encouraged me (when it was time and the bone had healed) to do what "felt right" as I began to move away from the crutches and the boot. This may sound elementary and expected and if it is - great! However, I've had my share of annual office visits to the Dr. over the years and the totality of all of those visits pales in comparison to exceptional service of Dr. Millstein and the Commons Clinic staff. From the greeting from the front office and the respect of your time (not even a 15 min wait to be seen) to entire back office staff - they are all following the example he is setting. Everyone makes you feel like they are there to help which is an awesome feeling when you are down and wobbling around on crutches! Forget the reviews skip this doctor!!!! Very very disappointing. It was suggested to me by a hospital doctor and a neurologist to see an orthopedic doctor. I chose Dr. Millstein myself based on reviews, and because of that waited over a month to see him. The issue is THEY KNEW I HAD A BACK AND NECK ISSUE (and serious numbness) and they made the appointment and then I waited yet another two hours when the day of finally arrived as he was overbooked (at least a few people had the exact same time appointment!) for absolutely nothing- the assistant brought in my mri put it up but he completely ignored it as Dr, Millstein asked if I was aware he was the wrong doctor. He is currently only seeing KNEE AND SHOULDER patients. Quelle joke!!! He immediately dismissed me and I asked if he was going to charge me anyway. He said yes!!!!! Amazing right???? Rip off the insurance company. Completely unethical. Angrily I decided to show him a knee injury. He had me go for an in house X-ray and said there was nothing he could do about this. I chose Dr. Millstein based on Yelp reviews and also a friend of a friend who went to him before. Now after my experience with him I would definitely not go to him again. This review is for Knee Meniscus problems (partial tear) with surgery, he might be different/better in regards to other issues. With a partial tear I started getting increasing pain when playing Beach Volleyball for more than 1-2 hours or walking longer than 2-3 hours. First visit to him he did a decent look at my condition but was extremely quick and rather pushy to schedule a surgery for a meniscectomy. At that time I declined because I wanted to try physical therapy further and strengthen the knee first. Second visit few months later he still suggested surgery and since my problems were not notice-ably from physical therapy I agreed to the surgery. Dr. Millstein explicitly and clearly confirmed that the outcome of the surgery would either be no overall change or improvement of my condition, definitely not a degradation of the situation. It would take 1 month to get to 80%, 2 to 95% and 3-4 month to 100% back to previous knee performances. The surgery at LaPeer itself went pretty smooth and problem free, however 2 month later with regular physical therapy and home exercises I fee at best to be to be at 50%. Still problems with walking stairs and other basic movements. 6 months later (whole time PT) I still can't jog, run, jump or do any fast movement. Walking stairs is possible and slow, even weighted movements are ok. However any quick movements are a no go, basically 0% ability when it comes to any kind of sport. This is a serious degradation of my previous condition. I understand not every surgery will bring the expected results, but a surgery shouldn't make the condition way way worse than it was before. Last follow up around 6 months later with Dr. Millstein he simply says it takes time. Also of my previous ~70% of medial meniscus left (from prior first surgery) I now per Millstein have only 20/30% meniscus left. He removed so much of the meniscus that I have barely any left. 9 months later my knee swell up from 15 minutes walking and after MRI and a different Orthopedic Doctor I now am being confirmed with cartilage damaged on the bone at the area where I am missing the meniscus and have to get another surgery. The surgery Dr. Millstein performed on me made my overall knee condition worse 3-4 times than it was before. I wish I never got that surgery or went to a different Orthopedic who would have opted for a repair instead of remove approach. I will most likely need a full meniscus transplant thanks to that very soon which comes with a year of recovery time. If you also have meniscus problems, don't go to Dr. Millstein. read more

I visited Dr. Millstein after dealing with 2 months of moderate to severe pain in my knee. I am NOT one who runs to a doctor for every little thing, so you know I was suffering if I actually made a doctor appointment. Thankfully, it turned out that I didn't have any big injury to my knee. X-rays and an MRI came out great, and Dr. Millstein told me it would just get better on its own Thankfully, slowly and surely, it has been improving. But here is the one thing that made me want to write a review. My father is a retired orthopedic surgeon, and he was obviously concerned about my knee... and equally concerned that I was going to see some quack (literally, my father looked over all of Dr. Millstein's criteria before he let me go to him! :-) ). Which was fine, but my father also insisted that he actually speak to Dr. Millstein on the phone. I was kind of mortified to ask that.... I'm sure Dr. Millstein is a busy guy, and I hated the thought of saying to him, "Hi, I'm a 39 year old woman, but can you please call my Daddy on the phone?" Unbelievably, after I mentioned in passing that my father is a doctor, Dr. Millstein offered to call him WITHOUT ME HAVING TO ASK! His rationale was, "If my daughter was seeing some other doctor, I would want to talk to them!" So awesome that he was so perceptive and insightful! I hope I never have a reason to see him again, but I would highly recommend Dr. Millstein to anyone. I have already sent one friend to him, and I hope my review will help convince more people in need of a great orthopedic to check him out! read more

I saw him for a third opinion and although he could've easily made money from my great PPO plan, he asked my about my future plans in regards to my desire for activity level and sports. I hurt my wrist on the pole and went on Yelp to find a doctor. Dr. Millstein is fantastic. I was a walk-in and they saw me within an hour of calling in! His office is clean, efficient and prompt. Dr. Millstein is warm, receptive and very helpful. After my x-rays, he explained what had happened to my wrist and what exercises I should do to strengthen to avoid further injuries. I echo the other fantastic reviews. Best experience with an orthopedic surgeon I've ever had and best you could hope for! 1) Dr. Millstein obviously knows his area of expertise and is a very skilled surgeon 2) He actually listens to you and takes his time to discuss your symptoms, his thoughts and the reasons for them (not just his conclusions!) and to answer your questions. This last is a real source of irritation for me with many physicians. 3) His staff were efficient, warm and friendly. Appointments were a breeze to schedule. 4) The surgery (torn miniscus) was quick and unbelievably problem free. I was up almost immediately and off crutches the next day. 5) The follow up appointment was another great conversation and I left feeling like I was a real part of my treatment plan. read more

I had a rotator cuff repair at this office. As far as the office staff goes, the employees at Dr Millstein's office are top notch. They were able to coordinate my surgery very quickly and worked very well with my personal physician to have the pre-surgical physical done. I was equally impressed with Dr Millstein. I had gone to him on the recommendation of a friend so I knew he would be good but he exceeded expectations. Prior to seeing Dr Millstein, I had made an appointment with another doctor with a large practice. When I went to that appointment I was seen only by a PA who concluded I needed surgery (which I definitely did) and the actual surgeon never introduced himself. Needless to say I was not impressed. My experience with Dr Millstein, however, was as opposite as it could be. He personally met with me and pointed out on my MRI what he planned to do. The PA at the other office had shown me the surgery on a photocopy of a generic picture of a shoulder. Dr Millstein answered all of my questions and I felt very confident knowing he was going to conduct the surgery. As for the actual surgery, it was conducted right around the corner at a surgery center. The staff there is equally efficient and everything went like clockwork. I was referred to Dr Millstein by a friend who was happy with him. I'm glad I was. He performed my rotator cuff surgery. I was scared and nervous as this was my first time ever having any issues with my body, let alone surgery. Dr Millstein took ample time to sit with me prior to surgery and go through in detail what would happen. He's quite busy, but it made me feel good to know he was so generous with his time. The surgery went well and the recovery, although long and painful, has went well too. I'm now 7 months removed from surgery and it appears I'll be almost as good as new. The nurses and his staff are super nice too both in their demeanor and responsiveness. Further as I only had Catastrophic insurance and therefore was going to be paying for this out of pocket they helped me understand the exact costs prior to surgery and were honest and forthright. When the bills came due it was just as they said months prior. Dr. Millstein is quite busy - but he's worth the wait. If you're unlucky enough to have an issue get an appointment with him and don't look back. read more

I'm not it ANY way associated with Dr. Millstein and his office outside of the many positive experiences with him and the staff. The least I can do is share here. This is my first review. I am a performer with a touring Broadway production. After many non-surgical treatments for an ongoing shoulder injury, it was time for serious intervention. After researching surgeons around the country I landed here in LA and had an appointment with Dr. Millstein. He was not quick to diagnose without first hearing ALL of my questions/concerns. He was very realistic and truthful about my recovery which any athlete/performer appreciates when your livelihood depends on it. It did not take long for me to decide this was the proper route. The front office has been very communicative, polite, professional. Response to any questions I'd have usually were responded to via callback or email the same day. (Not to mention Dr. Millstein called me the night of my surgery to check up!) The nursing staff in the office is amazing as well. They have always been very encouraging, upbeat, and "in tune". None of this feels "put on" or disingenuous. In approximately 6 or 7 appointments I've not waited more than 10 minutes to be placed in a room. Within another 5 minutes a nurse is taking blood pressure, etc. and another 5 Dr. Millstein is there. Something to consider is other patients, like myself, who have 1000 concerns and Dr. Millstein sits, listens, and answers without rushing. We should appreciate an office that functions this way. What's waiting a bit longer, if needed, to know you (and others) will receive top care? Finally, (and most importantly) I have made a FULL recovery. I am SO glad I went through with surgery with Dr. Millstein. I am back to 8 shows a week with no pain. read more

I've had to have a number of arthritis related surgeries over the years and fortunately they have all been successful. With these experiences one gets feel for the doctor in a number of ways. Some surgeons are more than happy to do surgery and others are much more conservative wanting to explore physical therapy and other options to avoid surgery. While my first impressions weren't favorable, the aftercare by Dr. Millstein definitely made up for it. Eric Millstein performed my meniscus operation so skillfully that I took nothing but Advil in the days following surgery. Four years later I can't find the scars that were supposed to last a lifetime, and have had no further discomfort in my knee. (I sometimes have to think for a moment to remember which side used to bother me.) Better yet, he's patient and communicative. I recently went in for a few mild sports injuries and was impressed by how unhurried and thoughtful he was in evaluating each issue and offering advice. He really puts you at ease. After my appointment I remembered something I'd wanted to ask, so I emailed his front desk, who called me early the next day with his reply. Bedside manner really matters when you're injured! Years ago a surgeon in San Francisco performed a tendon repair on my right foot. The surgery went well, but the period leading up to it and my subsequent recovery were punctuated by anxiety, due to the surgeon's penchant for answering only a few precious questions ("When can I start to walk?") before disappearing without warning for his next appointment. It led to some fierce arguments with my mom, who helped me get to appointments, over whether we'd asked the right questions in our allotted time. It was highly stressful, and made the experience of getting hurt all the less pleasant. On the contrary, thanks to Eric Millstein my experience was a positive one throughout. read more

I'm now well on my way to getting back to a performance level of 100%. He has an excellent bedside manner, thouroughly explaining my injuries so that I could understand the issues. Eric Millstein is magical! I saw 5 doctors before going to him for a shoulder replacement. All doctors, including Eric said that the recovery is about 85%. I'm no spring chicken (nearly 70), very active and athletic, riddled with arthritis and I have had a 110% recovery! Yes! I have FULL range of motion. He is brilliant and a masterful technician. I am incomplete awe of him. I couldn't find my last review but that one too was filled with idol worship. I wish he could fix every part of my body that needs fixing!!!!!!!! read more

As a surgeon, I think he is a bit better than OK, however there is a possibility that he did the wrong procedure, but the one that he did do which was coracoid impingement surgery, he managed to do so when I woke up I felt no pain or even my arm as he had filled it with novacain and then gave me pain medicine. His theory is that if you never feel the pain then you shouldn't have as bad of a time. However, it seems as if maybe my AC joint should have been removed and we did argue about that. His office staff is abysmal and tried to charge me 10,000 dollars but I had saved the message where they said I wouldn't pay anything, so after some phone calls that went away. If I were assured that he would cut the right place and I had someone else schedule it, I would use him again. But the over all experience and the fact that 6 years later I am still in pain is an issue. read more

Dr Eric Millstein has been my orthopedic doctor for about 5 years since I first saw him about my "shoulders" after Dr Frank Jobe passed away I have been derelict as I should have written a review long ago as he is not just a wonderful doctor he is extremely talented, very knowledgeable, patient, friendly, courteous, and so on and on. My retired nurse wife, who was Head Nurse in Pediatrics in two hospitals, told me long ago that the best of the best doctors are the ones with those traits and best of all are the doctors who help you make the decision. He is that kind of doctor! Dr Millstein is willing to spend as much time and provide as much information, etc, as you need to discuss your challenge, and come to a personal decision. He is recognized by other doctors as a Super Doctor, which is recognition by peers which recognition is only accorded to 5% of doctors. Well deserved. There is one other trait that we consider to be indicative of extreme doctor competence; that is the positive attitude and assistance of the office staff and their unsolicited voluntary comments as to their doctors and how they enjoy being employed at the office. In short, Dr. Millstein is a FANTASTIC doctor. He's all you could ask for. For full details of my experience, read on: I called Dr. Millstein's office at the suggestion of a friend who is a physical therapist. The receptionist was able to give me an appointment six days later. I am 53 years old, an active athlete for most of my life, and in the last six months I had developed some severe unfamiliar knee pain. I was concerned that my symptoms might be from a torn meniscus (cartilage) in my right knee. I went to Dr. Millstein's office in Beverly Hills, filled out some forms and had two X-rays taken of my knee in the office as a baseline check. Next, Dr. Millstein came in and listened attentively to my history of the problem and what type of pain I was getting. He did a hands-on physical exam, manipulating my knee in the test positions that would be painful if I had a meniscus injury. From that exam and my history he concluded that I probably did not have a meniscus injury, and it was likely another kind of soft-tissue inflammation that was giving me pain. I was still worried and wanted to rule out the possibility of a meniscus injury, so Dr. Millstein was willing to prescribe an MRI scan to be 100% sure it was not a meniscus tear. This was what I was hoping for, because if I could be sure it was not a tear I could treat my knee with anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy. Dr. Millstein also consulted me on my drug history and what I had taken and what worked best for me. This was very considerate -- most doctors just say: "Take this pill." I got the MRI results and it showed that Dr. Millstein's in-office diagnosis was correct: my meniscus was intact. I have since then been able to resolve the pain 95% with the anti-inflammatory drugs he prescribed, ice, exercise and resting the knee. Let me tell you the three things that most impressed me about Dr. Millstein: 1) He's a very modern guy with state-of-the-art tools, procedures, and ideas about treatment. Every aspect of his practice is totally up to date. 2) He was a good listener and did not have the superior attitude you get from a lot of doctors; I felt he was interested in my problem and in figuring out how to deal with it. 3) He was happy to take the most conservative, low-impact course of treatment. Some doctors would have wanted to do "exploratory" surgery on my knee. Not Dr. Millstein. This was great news for me. Dr. Millstein only wanted to do what was needed to put my mind at ease, treat my knee pain, and no more. He was patient-focused and really showed great medical ethics. One of the principal ideas of medical ethics that all medical students are taught in medical school is that, "given an existing problem, it may be better not to do something, or even to do nothing, than to risk causing more harm than good." It reminds the physician and other health care providers that they must consider the possible harm that any intervention (surgery) might do. So I applaud Dr. Millstein for giving me restrained, minimal, successful treatment. I would highly recommend him to anyone. read more

I am not able to rate the doctor as I never got to see him. I would however, second the rating of the staff negatively. I had set an appt with Dr Milstein in March for April. Apparently, he decided to stop taking my insurance on April first and no one bothered to inform me even going so far as to calling me yesterday to confirm my appointment. Prior to making my appointment i confirmed with their scheduler and even their off site billing that my insurance was not going to be an issue. Despite all that, their office found a very novel way to make it an issue. I guess i should thank god for small favors as the scheduler when I was already there pointed out that they no longer took my insurance. This could have been even more FUBAR. Just wondering, since doctors like to charge us for not making our appointments, am I allowed to bill him for the 2.5 hours I wasted trying to honor my appointment? read more

Dr. Millstein is an amazing Ortho physician. He took his time to go over my knee injury with me. He was calm, well mannered, and listened to my complaints as he examined me. My injury wasn't as bad as I thought, but I highly recommend him for any Orthopaedic issue you guys may have. I have referred family members to him as well. read more

Unclear if Dr. Millstein's exam rooms are large enough for his ego. I thought he was different than the archetypal egotistical orthopedic surgeon, but I was wrong. I saw Millstein in mid-2012 for a diagnostic knee arthroscopy. My initial impressions of him were very favorable. He performed the surgery and I recovered fairly quickly. Unfortunately Dr. Millstein wasn't able to resolve my problem in the procedure and I trusted his conclusion that an arthroscopy wasn't sufficient to solve my knee problem. However, when I had my first follow-up appointment it became very clear to me that I had misjudged the doctor. He was incredibly short with me and basically told me that he couldn't help me. He showed no interest in further discussing my problem and instead referred to two other doctors, both of whom were unable to help me. It would have been nice if Dr. Millstein showed a scintilla of interest in my case after my surgery -- very opposite his demeanor prior to my surgery. Despite my better judgment, I decided to schedule a second follow-up appointment approximately one year after my procedure to see if Dr. Millstein had any additional suggestions for me. Within 60 seconds of our visit, he said verbatim, "why are you here, I told you I can't help you." No questions about what the other two doctors he referred me to discovered. No questions. Just derision. I asked him why he accepted my appointment if he couldn't help me -- his response: "that is a question you should think about!!!!" Dr. Millstein may be a capable surgeon (or maybe he's not, I don't really know) but his bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired. My take on Millstein is that he has reached an inflection point in his career where he's letting his busy schedule start to get in the way of his patient interactions. ***SECTION BELOW ADDED JULY 2014*** Given that Dr. Millstein responded to my review I feel compelled to further respond. The fact of the matter is: 1) Millstein was incredibly rude in his manner when he realized he couldn't help me. It's easy to sound polite when you're defending yourself to the world on Yelp. 2) Millstein did refer me to two other doctors (who couldn't help me either, but at least were friendly), but never made any efforts to speak to the doctors he referred me to - as evidenced by the fact that I had to go through my whole history again because they didn't know my case. He never followed up with me in any way after he passed the torch, even though the doctors he referred me to couldn't help. 3) And when I decided to follow up with him after the failed referrals, Dr. Millstein literally wasted my time. He had no interest in examining me further - no interest in even exploring the faintest possibility that my condition had changed. It turns out that much of my knee problem resulted from tight hips -- you would think he would have at any point examined by hips to see if they were an issue (he didn't). I saw him for all of 5 minutes (4 minutes of which was arguing with him) for which he happily billed my insurance company even though he literally did nothing. read more

I actually found Dr. Millstein on Yelp and was really impressed with all of the reviews however, I'm saddened to say that I was completely disappointed. Unfortunately, I personally had nothing but bad experiences. I cannot say enough TERRIBLE things about Dr. Millstein's staff. He was a nice doctor, but his staff has been awful to deal with. They make it literally impossible for you to talk to anyone. Their lack of responsiveness has just been completely unprofessional and disheartening. To this day, I'm waiting for a phone call back (I've been calling for 2 weeks and still nothing) so that I can get a referral for a physical therapist, because Dr. Millstein was of no help at all and I still am in terrible pain. I've left numerous voicemails on his assistant's line with no response. Finally, after leaving a voicemail on a different line, I received one call back and when THEY called ME, I answered the phone and they said, "This is Dr. Millstein's office calling, can I place you on hold?" and then I waited on hold for 8.5 MINUTES only to be told, when they came back on the line that his assistant would call me back. Mine was a very mixed experience with this orthopedist and staff. I found Dr. Millstien on the internet. I've been treated several times in his offices for a very typical joint issue, no surgery. His offices are very conveniently located. Each was very clean with absolutely no wait times. It is really comfortable in the beautiful waiting areas; both waiting areas were nearly always empty on all of my visits. My first impression of Dr. Millstien was that he was a nice guy. But although my first visit was fine, I get a strong sense something is "off" with this organization. My second visit was OK, but I've noticed that this doctor's bedside manner seems caring at first, but later surfaces as quite arrogant, condescending and "superior to you." Honestly, he comes off making it clear that he is doing you a favor by treating you. Although he called me with test results, he recommended a very cookie-cutter approach -- cortizone "for the pain" -- which I resisted as I knew it to be a short-term, band-aid fix. My pain had gone. I succeeded in leading him (via many phone calls with one helpful nurse) to a more sophisticated treatment used by the top guys. I would have expected him to have led this discussion and options with me right off the bat since it is known that cortizone can have negative side effects. Still...no big deal. But what followed were excruciating, unnecessary problems with his poorly trained staff -- they are incompetent, unhelpful and really don't seem to care that a patient is calling because that patient needs assistance. In my case, I only needed a procedure code typically required by insurance -- just a number! Ironically, they answer the phone with "How may I help you?" yet cannot or will not fulfill that promise. One staffer refused to provide the code, yelled at me and made me feel as if my insurance company's need was a real bother to her and her co-workers. What the very rude and condescending staff member finally provided....... was still wrong simply because she refused to listen to my request. Her behavior was unacceptable. I ended up getting the needed code from the doctor in person on my final visit -- it took him less than 10 seconds to provide it. I really gave this place a chance because it is so convenient and their internet website marketing really pulled me in. But I will NOT return here and certainly would NOT consider surgery with this organization should I need it. Lesson learned -- 1) don't pic a doc off the internet just because he is close. 2) the way the staff treat patients starts at the top of the organization, trickling down from the attitude of the guy whose name is on the door. There are hundreds of great orthopedic guys with professional, caring, service-oriented staffs in Los Angeles. Now I am reminded why the best orthopedists have the busiest waiting rooms! read more

Dr Millstein is an excellent doctor. I have seen him for a range of problems over the past 5-6 years including hip, knee and related issues. He's direct and explains things clearly -- and is never condescending! I frequently recommend him to friends and colleagues. Additionally, his staff at the front desk and the technicians are all friendly, professional and efficient. Recently, the front desk found a way to squeeze me in for an appointment because I was experiencing pain, even though the schedule was unusually packed as Dr Millstein had been in vacation. Dr. Millstein is an excellent doctor and surgeon. He is very caring, friendly, attentive, and everything you need in a doctor who is about to perform surgery on your body. He took great care of me when I had to get shoulder surgery for my multiple dislocations. Now I am back to playing basketball with confidence in my shoulder. His staff is amazing too. Great experience with Dr. Millstein. I had a ruptured Achilles Tendon (aka, the Kobe Bryant injury) and was fortunate enough to be referred to Dr. Millstein by an anesthesiologist friend. Injured on Saturday, I saw him on a Monday and had surgery that Thursday. Good follow up from him and his staff. Great bedside manner, confident but not cocky, and he set realistic and practical expectations right from the get-go. I'd recommend him to anyone who is injured and seeking the best surgeon. read more

Delighted with Dr. Millstein. He's been my ortho guy for at least 3 years, and I have full confidence in his diagnosis ability. He knows what he's doing, has great "bedside manner," and perhaps most importantly, he does not suggest surgery as a first, second or third option, trying less invasive procedures first.
