This place has such sentimental value for me, as it was the bakery where I ate my first French food. After an ordeal at CDG, where I discovered my checked suitcase was still in Atlanta, I hopped on the SuperShuttle and was the last dropped off, right in the Latin Quarter. My cousin was doing her PhD at the time in Bioinformatics and had been invited to conduct research at AgroParisTech. She landed a tiny Parisian studio apartment in the 5th arrondissement, in which I stayed. With both her and her fiancé. We were definitely cramped, to say the least...
Anyway, after we walked around the Louvre (I was sort of in a daze, amazed that I was in Europe for the first time and tired as hell), she brought me to Eric Kayser and my eyes literally lit up. I took some photos before I got reprimanded. I was totally the American tourist and I was definitely embarrassed. I'm not sure if things have changed now, in the world of social media...
My cousin urged me to get the classic jambon-beurre. Not having had real French food before, I was HIGHLY skeptical of her recommendation. A plain sandwich with only ham and butter? What the hell? I was used to chomping on subs loaded with tons of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sometimes other stuff. I raised my eyebrow, especially since I was crazy hungry. But I let her order for me (I only knew how to say, "Do you speak English?" in French, haha. Married to a Frenchman now, that's basically all I know now) and I politely took the sandwich when the lady at the counter handed it over. I was nervous. The bread sort of looked overly crusty. The sandwich looked so blah. I took my bite as I walked out the door. HOLY MOTHER. This baguette sandwich literally changed my life and I am not joking. All my French-bashing from the days of tragic 9/11 melted away with each bite. As I neared the end of the sandwich, I slowed down. I savored my food, probably for the first time ever. I can still remember this experience years later. My culinary adventure was off to a most excellent start. After a whirlwind week in France, mostly staying in Paris, but also venturing off to Versailles and Rouen, I became an advent admirer of French cuisine, especially their own version of street, comfort food. These days AT lovingly cooks for me. I'm one lucky mofo.
So, long story about ham and butter on a mind-blowing baguette. Get it. Or anything at Eric Kayser.
