My son took the trial classes for Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was hooked. ECMMA has given my son the confidence, mindset, and skills that most people do not even possess. Then, my wife started taking Sparring classes and Kickboxing where fitness and health became her daily routine. Soon, my youngest son and I followed by taking BJJ classes, along with my daughter who took the same classes with her mom. All the instructors/coaches are dedicated in helping every member to achieve their growth and development, and reach their full potential through fitness and confidence, which is priceless. ECMMA is a family oriented gym, yet also produces competitive home grown athletes from surrounding local schools. ECMMA also added 6am BJJ classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Once in a while, ECMMA also invites instructors and athletes from different gyms as guests to give tutorials. The facility has two open mat areas, shower, and a weight room that is located in the basement. If I can start learning BJJ at 43 years old, then everyone can - it's all due to the support and guidance of each instructors. Our family have planted our flag here in ECMMA and we invite everyone to experience the positive vibes and energy, while building a better version of yourself through fitness and health.

Pros: - Dariel or D is the owner of the place and the main instructor for Krav and Fitness Bootcamp, and he is amazing! He knows when to push you for bootcamp (expect some yelling) but he doesn't overdo it. Overall, he is just a great instructor - explains everything in detail and does it slowly so you can grasp the concept he is trying to teach - Krav Maga classes - amazing group of people to work with - everyone is super friendly and is eager to help each other learn (the seniors are grouped in with the beginners which is great bc you learn the techniques faster and more accurately); I go every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday for Krav so I can keep learning new techniques; I am terrible at coordination but Krav is definitely helping me get better at it and making me stronger; besides self defense you learn how to act when there is a gun involved - Fitness Bootcamp classes - each class is different; D actually spends the time and makes sure each class is different so you can work on a different group of muscles and he also makes it fun bc you don't know what to expect; now that the weather is warmer we are running outside which is nice; I go every Wednesday and Sunday to stay fit bc it's a great workout (you get what you put in) and you won't get bored - Martial Blade Concept (MBC) classes - great class to learn about how to act when you're confronted with knives situations - Facility is clean and doesn't smell - Close to the LIRR station - you can easily walk from the LIRR station to here Cons: - No lockers - 1 year commitment

This business is absolutely incredible and if you haven't brought yourself or your child here yet then what the heck are you waiting for?? The discipline, exercise, and demand for perfection from the students is not only above average but top tier. This is the third martial arts studio (if that's the right word) that I've brought my son to in 4 years and this is the first place that actually demands perfection to earn belts- this is not a belt factory or a social club like the other places I've brought him to. The other two places I brought him to simply gave tips and belts based on the number of classes attended which is ridiculous. If you want to graduate you have to pass the class, right? Instructor John is incredibly polite, stern and professional. I wish I knew about this place sooner. Also, this is a black belt academy that participates in local and national tournaments so it's not just an after school activity. Facility is immaculate, parking is fantastic despite what I initially feared because there's an entire parking lot of substantial size on the end of the shopping strip, easy to get out and back on the road as well, and pricing is incredible for the value of the education and exercise my son is receiving. Instructor John is awesome with the kids and has a pow wow with each one of them as they exit the mat. No snowflakes here! And if my son cries, oh well! The world is a tough place and Instructor John gets them ready for it! My son will be a student for life as far as I'm concerned.

He asked the same to my son and the other older child, and very impatient, and finally the teacher pissed me off because he pull my son's collar and hurt his neck, my son cried badly, keeping saying neck pain. I ask the teacher to apologize to my son for his rudeness but he refused at first, and said I did nothing. Finally I called 911, he said sorry. I don't recommend this place for younger child, even though they said they are for 3-5 children, but they give zero patient to young children. Can't imagine how could this place keep running as the teacher is such rude and impatient.

Instructor Matthew is a great young role model and Instructor Joseph is also great to work with. Most of all, instructor Matthew raises the standards and really keeps this place from being a typical black belt factory. You better know your form, kicking, and self defense here when working with him! The fellow students are extremely friendly and respectful to each other and that seems to be the focus of the training, makes it so easy to learn while having fun. In 2 months, my daughters focus, discipline, academics, soccer, and maturity have all improved tremendously. The school is caring, and they make sure to keep the family involved as your child embarks on their journey. She made yellow belt in 2 months, and will be graduating to it next month. She was promoted into the black belt academy program with her white belt. The foundation and structure they provide is a great blue print which you can enact at home to keep consistency. If you're on the fence about registering, I would encourage you to do it. They have been extremely flexible with me, and to me the cost of the school vs investing into my daughter is a non-consideration as I believe this program will allow my daughter to grow into the person we see : loving, caring, hardworking, smart, and dedicated. My brother in law has been talking about Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym for years. "The top body…read morebuilders from all over train here!" I'm told. I mentioned for Father's Day, lets treat ourselves and work out at the Powerhouse Gym! What's great about this gym, they offer a daily rate. So we all agree to meet Saturday morning at Powerhouse Gym in Syosset. A very nice man greets us at the counter. He takes our information and scans each one of us into the system. We all start talking about "Bev Francis", Powerlifting champion of the 80s who broke more than 40 world Powerlifting records as well as the first woman to bench press over 300lbs. I'm diggin' the spot already! We're racking up the plates and ready to start our work out. A few regular members start talking to us, one guy tells me: There is equipment here from the 1970s! I'm not talking about old, junky stuff. There are certain tried and true weight lifting equipment that will never be out of fashion to use. Now I start looking at the other members. There are quite a few, just insane members that are lifting some serious weight. After working out I notice something I'm taking away from the gym: Old guys. That's right. When I was a kid in Brooklyn, my dads friends thought they were tough like Sonny Coleone. Not these guys. They were a few years older than me, but all in great shape. I watched them working out, just throwing weights around and having a good time. This isn't Planet Fitness where you have folks "resting" after each set. All of the members are a serious bunch of folks with serious goals. It was a pleasure to work out at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym. I live in Stony Brook, otherwise I'd be here working out on the weekends

I had already tried a local Planet…read moreFitness on their free day pass a few days earlier, which was fine...I suppose, but I needed something better. I'm not from NY and was not previously familiar with Bev Francis' Powerhouse Gym. What an experience! First, this place is enormous. Largest square footage of pure lifting equipment I've ever seen, and even more so, the largest variety of machines. Some contraptions so esoteric, it's not even clear what muscles they work from looking at them. The place is like the Smithsonian of weight machines. But there were a few things I discovered that I really loved and wished my own local gym had something similar. Second, this place is crowded. I was there mid-morning Saturday, and it was packed. I didn't need to wait for machines since I wasn't following a specific program, but if I had gone with a very specific set of exercises and order in mind, it would have been frustrating. The equipment condition varied depending on their age. Some was great, some seemed like they should have been retired a decade ago. Be aware that the gym caters more to elite bodybuilding than elite powerlifting. It won't make a difference for 99% of people, but as one example, there was a relative paucity of squat racks and benches for a place this large. If you are worried about being intimidated by the clientele, that may be a reasonable concern. I'm one of the biggest guys in most gyms, and I was only about average among the 100+ guys that were there. Having said that, there were only 1-2 freakishly large dudes (i.e. probable pro-bodybuilders), and the handful of people I interacted with seemed all relatively friendly. But it's not a place for beginners. Tiny annoyance: they have 2 scales which differed by 7 pounds (despite zeroing the ancient balance scale)

It can get a bit crowded at certain times of the day and since its a really small gym youll be waiting a bit to use your preferred machine. The staff are all well mannered people and have never given any issues. HOWEVER........ The one major drawback to this place is that it almost never has any running hot water. Every month seems to be an issue (and im not exaggerating). Im not sure if they are having trouble paying the bills here or if someone is turning the hot water valve off for days at a time but it is a constant issue. Me personally I work out before i head straight to work so a shower is needed after a hard hour or two sweating bullets. Just this morning I walked to the locker room after working out and one of the guys who frequents this place said to me "hey the water is luke warm today" and this is the running gag with everyone here, being delighted just for luke warm shower water. Litterally everyone in the locker complains about it every month. Anywho I step in the shower and put it on max heat but instead was drenched in water from antarctica. I did find some comic relief in it though, as others who stepped in there showers looking forward to the "luke warm" rumor but were disappointed, and then it became a symphony of complaints and anguish LOL. Theres something very funny about grown men just in agony about not having hot water. Men of all ages young and old getting together in a gym locker room and throwing a fit. I was told that blink was bought out and now owned by a company called PURE FITNESS. Well pure fitness, how about some pure hot water? Seriously though, the only reason i still come here is because its literally right by my job and also because its been so hot that the below zero water isnt so bad once you step outside in that 90 plus degree heat. Yet winter will be upon us soon and i dont know if i can survive bathing in arctic water without turning into a chocolate freezy pop. The one thing I do appreciate is that when you walk in they now have a sign that stands by the desk letting you know that theres no hot water. The thing is the sign is standing for weeks at a time. Seriously, in june there was no hot water for almost 3 straight weeks. I mean i cant understand whats going on at this place. We had hot water all last week and then i walk in this morning and its cold again. I just realized that it is the end of the month and I know now that liberty utilities doesnt play about that money.....
