Taste of Liberty Station

AWARENESS: Knowing the family and I would be staying close…read moreto Liberty Station during the week of April 21, 2019. I checked out not only Yelp events but, the Liberty Station website to se what was happening around the time of our visit. Yelp had a few events, most of those were for the over 21 crowd but, the Liberty Station site showed they were to host their 1st "Taste of Liberty Station" event and, it was open to all ages. NARRATIVE: The Taste of Liberty Station was held on Thursday, April 24, 2019 from 5 until 9 pm. Tickets were available for advanced purchase online at a discounted rate. Day of the event tickets were also offered with an additional cost of around $5 dollars. My family and I purchased our tickets prior to the event and I was able to download each ticket to my iPhone via the Liberty Station website. SCENE: Liberty Station is located in the Point Loma area of San Diego and occupies what was once the Navy Recruit Training Center and Naval Training Center. In fact, most the buildings playing host to the various shops and restaurants on Liberty Station are the old barracks and schools the Navy once owned and used from 1923 until 1997 when the base and buildings were sold to the City of San Diego. EVIDENCE: The event started off when we were handed a "roadmap" flyer. The flyer had a route map and a check box from the restaurants and shops participating in the event. As you entered each shop or restaurant for your bite size sample or taste. An employee would check off your stop in the box provided. Over 27 restaurants / shops participated in the event. I also noticed and actually snapped a picture of paper bags along the route which were filled with sand and a candle. These were placed along the route to show guest the path (route) to take the next stop. IMO, pretty cleaver. Over the years, my family and I have enjoyed eating at the many restaurants in and around Point Loma and Liberty Station but, I was still surprised a few times today after sampling a few places I had seen but never tried. All the sample of food at the various restaurants were plentiful and tasty. I was also happy to see all of the many employees and volunteers with smiles on their faces as they interacted with guest. In some instances, I even got some of the employees to laugh at my weak jokes. RECOMMENDATION(S): What can I say. Great weather. Great people and, a great location. With this being the first of its kind at Liberty Station. I think those responsible for putting the event together did an awesome job! I am sure with todays success, this event and more like it will take place in the future and when it does. I will be right here to watch, eat and smile.

2.5 stars, it is!…read more This review is long overdue since it happened on Sept 17th but wanted to be sure that I eventually got around to writing one. While i'm not an elite triathlete, I've done many events since I've started in 2009. This was the first time that I actually did this local event. My observations with this race: PROS: --If you live in San Diego, course is in our back yard. No need to ship your bike and carry all your tri gear. For those who have ever done this, you know this is a huge plus. --Calm swim in the bay = fast swim times. --This year, the medal was pretty nice as were the two shirts that they gave out in your goodie bag. One was a t-shirt and the other a technical shirt. Both i've used several times which is unusual for race shirts. --Flat run course --Coach Gurujan was the Head Referree for the event so you know USAT rules were strictly enforced. Love it! --Beer garden was great but they ran out of a lot of things early on. CONS: --Expo is really small which I pretty much expected. Pretty much just consisted of their store. --Staff during check in/expo seemed unorganized and were not very friendly. If you had questions regarding the race, they were not very helpful or accommodating. I spoke to an employee (Rachel???) and she was border line rude and was talking crap about other participants in my presence. Not too professional. --Swim start was a joke! They were using a bullhorn and having staff run around yelling for people to get to the swim start. Ever heard of sound system and speakers...just saying. Lots of people missed their waves because of this. --Course cut off times seemed pretty loose. I had a few friends in the last few waves with less than 40 minute swim only to get cut off on their second loop on the bike course. Much sooner than what was communicated to us in the race details. Pretty disappointing since this was their first triathlon. They aren't slow on the bike either. Needless to say, not first time triathlon friendly. This is a nice local event in San Diego that I'd love to support but I'm just not a fan this race and in my experience with Moment, I'm just not impressed with their staff. There are a lot of local races that I'd rather participate in; San Diego International, Carlsbad triathlon, Solana Beach, Mission bay, SheRox and many others that run a lot more smoothly. At least I gave this race a try...

A beautiful course out laid through point Loma. A Stillwater start followed by a challenging bike ride through the submarine base climbing up to the lighthouse and back to liberty station on unexciting bobsled style downhill course. The race concludes with a run along the liberty station park. It's a great event well put together and USAT sanctioned.

This was our first time here, and it was impressive. There were lots of vendors from whisky, wine, spirits, food, beer, and donuts. Most of them were excellent and were fantastic. We spent a good time around the fountain square where most of the great foods and wines were. Plus, there was an awesome dj on center stage playing classic to modern hits and mixes. We had a great time even though it was a short 3 half-hour long. But, too much is a great thing, right? We were all stuffed beyond capacity, too. I'm sure many of you have been here, especially if you live down here in the San Diego area. I was fortunately able and luckily to live in Carlsbad, North County, for three years back in 2000. Anyway, next year is a go for sure. We will be in line sooner than later. Enjoy.

The person it selling the sunglasses was very hesitant but ended up on her Inc a deal that they had on the Gator by the Bay app. The sunglasses are extremely cheap and broke within 10 minutes I took him back and felt that the person working there did not feel obligated to honor the quality of his product as they are cheap. Everything is fairly inexpensive compared to the same people if you were to find them at the Del Mar Fair I think the entrance price of $40 reflects that. A great place to drink beer have family fun in the sun listen to music enjoy the day also a great thing to have as a family tradition to go once a year.

The music program seems enough to satisfy even the pickiest of people (4 stages packed with different musicians), but other aspects of the "New Orleans experience" were lacking. They only had three cooking demonstrations for the entire day, and the one I wanted to go to on making jambalaya was canceled for no apparent reason. And they were missing New Orleans drinks: Nowhere to be had were hurricanes, mint juleps, sazeracs, cafe au lait (coffee). There was little informative about Mardi Gras culture and the bathroom situation was wanting: in the afternoon those portable hand washing stations lacked water and hand towels. I just think to myself there's a lot on offer in San Diego that's free - like Lunar New Year Festivals, which I went to earlier in the year. Completely free to go and sometimes free parking, as well, so if you're going to pay $90 for Gator by the Bay it better be a damn good experience all around.
