Envy Wines is a great place to kick back, relax, and enjoy some high quality estate grown wines in Napa Valley. Conveniently located near adjacent towns, of Calistoga, St. Helena, and Santa Rosa, this offering makes for a great visit, day trip, or wine tour and highly accessible from main roads. The service is phenomenal. Erin was able to explain the wines, grapes, process, and things to do in the area. She was so pleasant to speak to and learn from. She is the definition of true hospitality. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming. This property is friendly to all, including children, dogs, and cigars! Dress code is casual and the attitude is down to earth and not pretentious, so if you identify as a relaxed and casual person, you'll do just fine here! The wine tastings offer some on and off menu items, so you are getting what the menu promises and more. I enjoyed the 2021 Envy Chenin Blanc, the 2020 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2019 Borderline Petite Syrah. This is another winery my husband and I got to venture out and try in Calistoga with our wine passes. I really enjoyed them! We went on a Sunday when there was football so they weren't as busy which was nice, we emailed the night prior for a reservation and they got us in no problem. Driving up you don't see the parking right away so it's kind of tucked away. The woman serving us, Barbie was really knowledgeable and kind, she took her time with us. We started with the Chenin blanc and I really liked it, it was crisp and fresh a really nice way to rev up the palate. We then moved to the Cuvee, and that is a blend of the chenin blanc, pinot blanc and semilion. I enjoyed this one too. Next we moved to Reds, first up, Bee Bee's blend, I actually think this ended up being my favorite. It was a really nice rounded red, with enough fruit and a little bite from the peppercorn notes. We ended with a Cab and Petite Sirah, what can I say you can't go wrong with cabs in the Napa valley. The petite Sirah was really really nice, probably my top two was the petite sirah and the blend. We went on a week vacation to celebrate our ten-year wedding anniversary out in the Napa/Sonoma/Calistoga area, and did a lot of wine tasting. Our tasting experience at Envy Wines was our favorite! We received superior hospitality from Lacey. She asked us our seating preference upon arrival, and we chose a little table out on the patio in the sun. We were Lacey's only tasting, and she gave us a phenomenal tasting experience. She took our wine preferences into account and crafted a personalized tasting. She gave us lots of interesting knowledge regarding the region, the winery, and wines in general. We did fun things with the wines like side-by-side tastings of the same wine from different years, and the same wine but grown from different soil. Planned a birthday wine tasting for my mom & took my sister-n-law for her first tasting. Our experience was nothing but unpleasant. The wines were actually pretty good and would have considered purchasing at least 2 of the bottles....but the service made me change my mind. Cathy the manager was nothing short of rude and disrespectful. Can we sit at the table? Cathy: "No that is for members only and you are a groupon group" Another member was about to pour us our second tasting.... then Cathy pops in "They don't get that one, they are Groupon people" What wine are you best known for? Cathy" Our Carter wines, but those start at $100 a bottle, you wont be tasting those" said with a tone that we could not afford it. Cathy " we need you to scoot down" (as she moves our wine glasses) "we need room for our customers with reservations" I have reservations! "yes, but you have a groupon and these are people with regular reservations" We waited a long time between tastings while others at the bar were being served promptly. Luckily Cathy got busy at the register so Barbie took over and the rest of our experience was pleasant. Then we hear Cathy say under her breath "I wish I didn't let that guy in, he is a complete @$$hole" Thank goodness she wasn't talking about us! For the record, I do not have to use a groupon to go wine tasting, it was just something I saw and thought it would be neat to try a winery in Calistoga. Secondly, I can more than afford a $100 bottle of wine (not that I would, but I could). Lastly, Cathy was the manager....VERY VERY poor attitude, and it was obvious should could not handle the stress of a full tasting room. We have enjoyed theor wine for over 2 years. Truly delicious and the tasting was fabulous. Unfortunately, last fall shipment had issues. the first two bottles had a prominent orange tint and very acidic taste. Things happen, and we reached out for advice. We were told to try another one, and that the first bottle will be replaced. The other bottle was a bit better but still very different from what we remembered. after reporting the second bottle issue, we have never heard back for almost half a year. several follow ups did not lead anywhere. the cancellation request was finally responded to after I forwarded it to alternative email. it's a shame. it was great wine while it lasted, but with the price per bottle, just not worth the risk. read more

What a great little winery. Michael who was pouring that day was awesome - very knowledgeable and patient! I purchased the sauvignon blanc and the petite sirah ... though I do regret not getting Bee Bee's blend. But at the time I was fearful I would lose the $70 bottle to my dad who shops at my house and later find that my mom is using it as a cooking wine. Not a crowded stop, we were here for almost an hour and no one else came in, however all that means is that your host can spend all their time with you and she did, she told us about the wine, the area and then the owner came in and introduce himself. While we were there a couple of local wine makers brought their grapes in to get crushed and were working on setting up their wine in barrels. Wife ended up with a couple of bottles to take home. When we came in, there were already 5 guests at the small tasting bar, which already seemed crowded. The tasting room is already quite small, with the table behind us reserved for wine club members. My bf and I squeezed into the end of the bar and we were quickly handed two glasses and a tasting menu. The tasting consisted of 5 wines, starting off with the 2014 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, then the 2014 Day Rose, 2013 Bee Bee's Blend, 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, finishing with the 2013 Petite Sirah. My bf and I thought the wine was ok. The Bee Bee's blend had a spicy kick to it at the end and the petite sirah was good. The service was a 3/5. Our host spent a lot of time engaging with the previous two groups that were already there so my bf and I were chillin with each other on the side, which we didn't have a problem with. But it would have been nice if we learned a little more about the winery and their wine, since they don't give tours. However, (I hate to compare) it's probably because we came here after going to Vincent Arroyo's winery, which was a couple minutes' drive away, with a personable and informational tasting experience, and unique wines. Overall experience was a 3/5, but I gave one extra star because our host let us revisit the sauvignon blanc and rose to see which one we wanted to take home. When you are tired of going to the huge, mass producing wineries in Napa Valley, Envy Wines is a great place to taste good wine with a friendly staff. The winery is a couple miles north of the main drag in Calistoga, on the same street as the Old Faithful Geyser. They are open daily and tastings are $10 and they usually have you taste 4-5 different wines. All of the grapes are grown on site so the production is pretty small (their largest production is about 360 cases). Our favorite is their Sauvignon Blanc. Envy also makes Petite Sirah, Cabernet, and a BIG red called "Bee Bee's Blend" which is a mix of merlot, cabernet, and petite sirah. They also have a Rose from Vine Haven which is the label from Nils Venge, one of the owners/winemakers of Envy. The wines are middle of the road as far as prices ($55 for the Cab, $26 for the Sauvignon Blanc), but the quality of the wine and service are worth the trip. read more

As we drove into the Envy Winery as darkness settled in, we were greeted by an Italian looking building set among the vineyards in a well designed layout. We arrived at the Envy tasting room ten minutes before closing,,,,, on the eve of Thanksgiving. As we entered the tasting room, Mark B. who was working solo at the late hour warmly greeted us and offered us a tasting menu while working with three other groups of people. Mark stayed an hour after their official closing before the Thanksgiving Holiday and meticulously stepped us through the Envy wine tasting list while expertly answering our questions about each particular Envy wine, the winery history, and his background. Mark was engaging, personable, and extremely knowledgeable about Envy wines and the wine industry. The red wines offered by Envy are outstanding in each of the particular offerings and although our intent was only to buy a couple of bottles of Merlot, we ended up buying a half case of wine to enjoy with our friends back home. My wife had worked in a tasting room of a former winery in Fremont and Mark shared with us a special technique that the Envy tasting room employs to ensure the freshness of opened bottles. The attention to detail of this particular technique is one we had never seen before ( I don't want to go into detail as I don't want to potentially compromise a company trade secret.). Mark who hails from Queens in New York City and is well acquainted with a wide variety of fine cuisine, shared with us dishes that would go well with each particular Envy wine we had expressed interest in. I highly recommend the Envy Winery as a 'must stop' while in the Calistoga area as it is close to the downtown shops and spa's and their red wines are exquisite and reasonably priced. One interesting item, the Envy Winery makes an oak barrel (French Oak) aged Sauvignon blanc that is absolutely exquisite! Not many small wineries offer a premium Sauvignon blanc along with several premium reds. Staff members like Mark add to an enjoyable and educational experience while visiting a Calistoga area winery. Had an amazing time with Haley leading our tasting! My husband and I purchased a Groupon to do a tasting for two and she led it beautifully, even giving us a taste on something not on our normal menu, one of their white dessert wines. We enjoyed all their wines, but ended up going home with two of the Late Harvest dessert wines. They really do the dessert wine justice. I have been unable to think of anything but that wine since our tasting in early April and have been trying to get back out to Envy ever since. Hopefully this summer will allow for some languorous weekends where we can go back up and pick up a few more bottles of that liquid gold wine! read more

Envy was one of my favorite stops during my last wine country trip. I had this place bookmarked because of the Yelp reviews, and our server at Brian Arden also recommended it. It was a Monday so the tasting room was plenty calm, plus it's in Calistoga away from the crowds of Hwy 29. Mark poured our tastings, and we had a great time discussing wine with him. I liked everything I tried which doesn't happen too often. I had a hard time narrowing down my choices for purchase. I got the rose of Syrah and petite sirah; one to enjoy now and the other for aging. The bottles were reasonably priced, and the Calistoga setting was lovely. I will definitely be bringing friends here on future trips. read more

I hesitated coming to Envy, because the name seemed cheesy to me [I later found that the name has nothing to do with the dictionary definition of the word envy]. I'm glad I didn't go with this first impression, because this a very nice place with great wines and friendly staff. The 2-for-1 tasting special on Yelp was a huge plus! I remember the good old days when winery tastings were free, but for the most part those days are gone. Sadly, I didn't buy anything because I'd already gone over budget at the previous winery stop. We enjoyed our visit to Envy Wines and want to thank Phillip for being such a gracious and helpful host. Although I preferred their red wines, they do offer several whites that are appealing. Envy Wines is across for Old Faithful Geyser in Calistoga and is easy to locate. We highly recommend visiting them but, if you are unable to do so, you should check out their wines, especially the Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bee Bee's Blend. Reservations are required but may easily be made. The tasting fee of $15 is waived with the purchase of two bottles of wine. After a good nose of mostly lemon there was a crisp, but not tart, lemon and Japanese pear on the palate with some minerality. It had a medium length but very pleasant finish of lemon and vanilla. A nice SB for the price. Envy's Bee Bee's blend has been produced yearly and is named after Nil's now deceased dog. We tasted the Envy Wines 2010 Calistoga Estate Bee Bee's Blend ($41). Light ruby in color, it is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petite Sirah and has a nice aroma of red cherries with hints of cedar. Although rather fruit forward on the palate, it is not jammy or sweetish, and has red cherry, pepper and nicely integrated tannins followed by a lovely and long finish of cherry, spices and pepper. This is a very appealing red blend that is quite drinkable now. I liked it almost as much as the Cab and PS, and it is a rather unique and unusual blend. My friend liked it a lot. Next up was the Envy Wines 2010 Calistoga Estate Cabernet Sauvignon at $48. This is 100% Cab. An appealing bright purplish in color, it had a very nice aroma of black cherry, smoke and vanilla. Smooth and fresh on the palate, it was mostly black cherry with some vanilla. The finish was quite long with cherry, lingering tannins and spice. A very nice Cab and, along with the Petite Sirah, my favorite of the wines we tasted. The Envy Wines 2010 Calistoga Estate Petite Sirah at $45 followed. 390 cases were produced. Dark ruby in color, it had a great nose, mostly spice and pepper. With very fresh fruit on the palate, I got mostly blackberries, pepper and some cola with very nicely interlaced tannins. Although this is a full bodied PS, it is not overwhelming and the varietal characteristics come through nicely. The length was medium plus with mostly cola and blackberries. Definitely a superior Petite Sirah, and, along with the Cab, my favorite of the wines we sampled. If you like Petite Sirah, you might want to check out the P.S. A "do not miss this place!" winery in Calistoga. Friendly staff and excellent wine. The tasting room was spacious and comfortable, if a little "commercial" in feeling - very clean, very modern, slightly showy. The lady working behind the counter more than made up for anything the room might have been lacking, however. She was immediatley warm and friendly, greeting us as we came in and starting up a good conversation. She could describe the wine without sounding like she was reading off the back of a bottle, and she gave us enough in our glasses to actually taste properly. We even had a good time chatting with the other couple who was in tasting, rounding out a great tasting experience. Oh, and the wines! They were fantastic! Indeed, I don't have any hesitation in saying it was my favorite of the seven Calistoga wineries I visited during that trip. Deep, awesomely fruity, with a pleasing complexity. The Bee Bees Blend and the Petite Sirah were knockouts! And I even came home with a white, their Sauvignon Blanc, a rare thing for me! No dump-buckets here - I was happy to savor. At $25 a tasting, I wasn't too impressed with this winery. The woman at the tasting bar was a little snotty and the wines weren't the greatest. The grounds and tasting room are easily outshined by many other wineries in the valley. Not that I have anything against smaller wineries but this one is small and lacks any charm. All four in our party agreed we should have taken our money elsewhere. We had much better experiences and some amazing wines at Charles Krug (my personal fave), Clif Family, Franciscan and Smith-Madrone. And for the same price. read more

My wife and I have gone wine tasting in Napa regularly (about every three weeks) for the past two years. We've been to about 70 wineries in Napa along; about 225 overall. I've noticed that over the past few trips, the excitement has started to wear off. We've been to a plethora of mediocre wineries and we can only go to our favorite ones so much. Thankfully, though, the glorious thrill returned last Saturday, as we discovered the wonderful wines of Envy. Located far up in rugged, beautiful Calistoga, the winery truly feels like an escape from the more congested areas of Highway 29. I arrived not knowing anything about Envy wines and left overwhelmed by their quality and excellent pricing. A few labels are poured at the winery: Vine Haven, Envy and Carter Cellars. The former wines are produced by Nils Venge of Venge Vineyards (Envy and this winery are affiliated) and use Oakville fruit, while the latter feature very high end Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots that regularly get top scores from Wine Spectator. Our host was the cellar master and he treated my wife and me with great enthusiasm. He even threw in a free tasting of the Carter wines, as he sensed that we would appreciate trying them (he mentioned that he respected my writing about each wine in my journal)! About 20 minutes into the tasting, while we were still going through the Envy wines, I realized that I had heard about the Carter wines before: a couple months ago I read James Laube's reviews in Wine Spectator and whined to my wife about how I probably would never be able to taste high scoring wines like these! My heart leapt and I felt overwhelming joy, as I knew I'd be trying some of the best wines of my life. Highlights included two Vine Haven Merlots (2004 and 2005; $30 each)- both were outstanding. Among the Envy wines, we loved the 06 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon ($55), which featured rich dark chocolate, berry and olive against a backbone of firm tannins, and the 05 Bee Bee's Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah; 96 cases; $55), which had a fascinating graphite element on the tannic body. By the time we tried these, I was definitely interested in learning about the wine club, as these were wines that I wanted to relive. Among the five Carter Cellars wines we brought, my favorite was the Coliseum Block ($125). All the Carter wines, though, featured alluring noses with engaging depth and richness. Simply smelling them mesmerized me. After a marvelous hour spent at Envy, we joined the wine club and used our newly bestowed 20% discount to purchase a bottle of the 04 and 05 Merlots, 06 Napa Cab and 05 Bee Bee's Blend. The wine club has different levels of involvement; we joined the Sampler Club, which involves receiving two shipments of three bottles each year. One can even choose the wines, making it an extraordinary deal! Even if you don't join, be sure to stop by for a tasting. $10 allows one to sample all the Vine Haven and Envy wines; an extra $15 includes the Carter Cellars ones. read more

This place was good. Maybe a little higher priced than what I think it's actually worth, but still good. When we went, there were two little chihuahuas that belonged to someone working that day. They made a beeline for me and cuddled at my feet. That right there got me to buy something! I ended up taking home the Sauvignon Blanc, and I think hubby picked out the Cabernet Sauvignon.
