I had no idea at the time how challenging and different the process is from other class room activities. I have taught technical classes in networking and video technologies over the past several years and thought that experience would have adequately prepared me for teaching English AFL but discovered the process is completely different. The UT CELTA program provides the tools to teach where a common language is missing. This can be frustrating for both the student and the teacher and having a toolset to bridge the missing and most common form of communication, speech, addresses and prepares the instructor for the specific challenges of teaching a foreign language.

The tutors were so supportive and helpful and I benefited a lot from their great feedbacks. The best part of CELTA was learning to manage my time more efficiently and making lesson plans in a very organized way. Muy importante! :) The past few years I have ventured out to the public social events held by The Language House. It is so nice to meet and mingle with other adult learners. Weekly class is very important and conversing with others is equally important. That's what the social events are all about. I have also made a few close friends in class - we meet regularly for coffee or lunch and practice our español. Muchas gracias to Virginia, all the instructors and The Language House for all that you do for us and the community.

There's also a lot of additional resources we receive out of class that are helpful, such as: WhatsApp Spanish group, homework lessons, Quizlet (app) trainings; etc. Thank you so much, Virginia!

The German-Texan Heritage Society Christmas Market is cozy, chaotic, heartfelt, and packed with genuine German holiday spirit, all set against the beautiful historic German Free School grounds. The annual Weihnachtsmarkt is put on by people who genuinely love this space, the culture, and the season -- volunteers who pour their hearts into making it happen. If you remember that going in, you'll leave smiling, not frustrated. The atmosphere is extremely family-friendly -- kids were laughing, exploring crafts, and even getting treats from St. Nick as they walked in the gates. The folks working the market love this space and were friendly and welcoming, happy to share a bit of history or the story behind the German Texan Heritage Society and the event. The space itself -- with big Live Oaks and the historic architecture -- makes for a pretty special backdrop. Filled with yummy German bread, holiday treats, and drinks (I wasn't a beer drinker, but the folks around me swore the brews were good), beautiful German holiday décor and unique ornaments (I grabbed a few for my adult kids' first Christmas in their new home), festive music and general cheerful chaos -- part of the charm, not a flaw, walking through was pretty enjoyable, regardless of the chaos and lines. Grab a pretzel, some bread, a beer or whatever, and enjoy it while you wait in lines. Again, this is a volunteer-powered fundraiser. So yes -- lines can be long, and navigating the crowds can feel a bit hectic. But if you go with a playful attitude and realistic expectations, it feels less like waiting in line and more like being part of the fun. The love that goes into this event shines through everywhere. You're not just supporting an event -- you're supporting a nonprofit that preserves German-Texan culture and history right here in Austin. Go early, take your time, soak it up, and be kind to the amazing humans who make it happen. Highly recommend if you want a warm, local, and heartfelt holiday experience.

Turns out there was only one poor cook and one order-taker, moving very slowly and answering multiple questions per customer. In stark contrast there were about 10 people taking orders for beer -- most of which they ran out of by early afternoon. There was a band playing German oom-pah favorites and not enough tables or seats. I didn't see any exhibits about the history of Germans in Austin. I spoke with one guy dressed in traditional German garb and wearing an Ask Me Anything badge. I asked him if there were Volksmarches in the Austin area. He had never heard the term. Ok, I'm sorry for venting. But really, if you're going to charge $15 entrance fee, $25 for a beer with a mug and $5 for a stale pretzel, you really need to get your act together. Caveat emptor (Buyer beware.)

The themes that were discussed where customized based on what I hope to accomplish. I also enjoyed that this structure provided opportunities to practice a little Spanish a few days a week and then have an immersive discussion one-on-one with Dominque. In early October I decided to go to Merida Mexico and we created a second course structure that focused on the types of interactions I could experience on my trip. It was incredibly helpful in that I was able to "situationalize" my Spanish when interacting with the locals. This allowed be to navigate restaurant experiences, asking for directions throughout the city, plan a trip to another city, and fully engaging in a story-telling show completely in Spanish. For me learning Spanish is about connecting with the culture and community and while I still have a long way to go, i felt my time with Dominique served me well in having a great experience. One particularly fun interaction was when I purchased a painting in Merida and met the artist who spoke no English. As we spoke - he stopped and asked me where I was from and I said the US. He commented - no before that; your Spanish doesn't sound like an American. It felt great and I credit that with my sessions with Dominique.

They would place me on a strict schedule based on the number of sessions I purchased and were so caught up in writing what they thought college admissions boards would want to read that I ended up submitting personal statements that were not so personal. With that said, Sean is not your typical college admissions counselor. He treated me like an actual person, not just a paycheck. At our first session, Sean took the time to simply talk to me and figure out what drove me to this particular career path. He then helped me channel my passion into an eloquent, interesting general personal statement that was later tailored to four different graduate programs. In working with Sean, I did not get just a personal statement, I got complete application support. He gave me his cellphone number and encouraged me to text him with any questions between sessions. He was always quick to respond and would also text me to check-in on my progress. This type of regular communication allowed us to get the small details out of the way and focus on the more important aspects of each application during our face-to-face meetings. Applying to graduate school is overwhelming, but Sean made the process nearly stress-free. I believe his genuine interest in my success was key to writing a personal statement that stood out in a pile of cookie cutter essays. It feels so good to say that I was ACCEPTED TO ALL four graduate programs I applied to and will be attending my dream school starting this fall. Next time I need support on any type of professional application, I will not hesitate to contact Sean and you should too!
