I'm really torn here between a rock and a hard place. Joe embodies the true American spirit, work ethic, fair, humble, can do attitude etc. The work he's done has been top notch, zero complaints about the actual work, honest diagnostic, and cost of parts and labor. The issue that I have with him is his professionalism, scheduling a time slot and sticking to it and not having to hear excuses about something else that came up. What you do is call the client and either cancel or reschedule. Give them the option to choose a different way to resolve the situation they are in. You don't just leave someone hanging who is in need of this critical service while you decide when you will get back to them if you decide to get back to them at all. Very disappointed with my recent dealings with him. I expected way better from as some else here said the last of a rare breed. Just a heads up to anyone else who might be considering him as an option make sure you have a plan B and are extremely patient. Good thing I am in a place where I can control my temper but to be honest... Anyway i'll quit while i'm ahead and haven't said anything insulting and low class but trust me I could. He wasn't feeling well so he sent his partner, Cody, later the same day. Cody was great! He needed something he didn't have, and Joe brought it to my house, despite being laid up. The issue was diagnosed as alternator, and before adding more cost buying a battery, he installed the alternator, tested, then went for the battery. I called Joe and asked for a quote regarding a leak in my 2011 Ford Focus power steering. He gave a real quick quote but said he could give me better information if he saw the vehicle. I went to the shop a few minutes later and he did a visual diagnostic (for FREE) and gave me a quote. It was A LOT cheaper than his competitors in the same area. One competitor quoted me 100% above Joes quote. He said I can buy the part and the labor charge wouldn't change. So far Joe is honest, very reasonably priced and knowledgeable. Called Engine Joe about my '91 MR2 overheating. He came over and found the messed up hose that was causing a coolant leak. He bought a hose the next day and fixed it right away. I went based on the Yelps reviews. Gave him a called on Tuesday, explained him my car situation, he told me to meet on Thursday and to text him the informations in which I did. So the next day(Wednesday), I wanted to confirm about the date to meet because he didn't text me back. Apparently he forgot who I was, (in my head thinking, it's fine, giving him the benefit of doubt because he might busy and forgot.)So I explained to him again about my car issues. He then proceeded to saying hes busy Thursday and is available Friday at 10am even thought we agreed for Thursday. I agreed to Friday 10am and he told me he marked his Calendar. Friday morning (10 am), He wasn't here. I called him again, no answer. Second time,he finally answer. Told me he can meet me in 40 mins. 1 1/2 hrs later he showed up. No apologies or anything. Ran a diagnosis, told me I had ( VSA modulator and transmission problems.) I asked him what's the next course of action, told me he needs to do some research and to call some of his buddies for more guidance and would give me a call Saturday afternoon which is the next day. Next day, no call or anything. I Called multiple times but no answer. 3 days later still nothing. I understand due to covid-19 pandemic situation and time is tough, at least be professional about it. I have used Engine Joe several times, for two different cars. I have always found them to be very honest, quick to respond, to do fast and thorough work, reasonably priced, and did I mention honest? Most recently Something broke in my brakes and they were actually grinding. I knew those would need new rotors, but asked him to do the rear brakes also. He got parts for front and back, but ended up only doing the front, as the back brake pads were almost 100%. I would have paid for the rear and not known any different. In the past, I have gone to Joe after getting quotes from other auto repair places, and Joe has found cheaper, less "comprehensive" ways to repair problems. I had a battery clamp that was not replaceable due to a frozen nut that would not come off. While I knew the dealer was not my cheapest option, I knew this was not a labor intensive repair and was willing to pay dealer rate to get it taken care of quickly. Dealer repair foreman was called out to look at my vehicle and said the clamp could only be removed by cutting the battery cable and wiring on a new clamp. Only catch was he "estimated" the labor to be 2.5 hours and the total repair cost at $350.00. My other option was to order a new wiring harness for $450.00 and pay additional labor for that installation. Now I'm no car repair guru but I've been around the block a few times and know this is a simple matter of cutting a copper cable and attaching a new clamp. I guestimated it would take a professional mechanic about 15 minutes. At the same time I do respect the knowledge of a professional mechanic who knows how to do this repair properly and was willing to pay for his knowledge as well. Batteries power all kinds of onboard computers and a half-assed wiring repair could end up costing a lot of money if any of those computerized items gets fried. Lucky for me a friend had given me a business card for Engine Joe months earlier saying he was a great mechanic and highly recommended him. I googled Joe's name and found some pretty impressive technical write-ups he had done in response to repair issues that were posted on a chat board. Joe received quite a few accolades for his thorough and very technical responses which made me feel this guy knew his trade. Called him up and told him about my problem. He said he could do it so I made an appointment. Joe showed up at my home and had already researched the wiring used for my vehicle so he had the part in hand to complete the repair. Took him about 15 minutes including writing up the receipt. After the repair he even took out his meter to make sure the voltage was correct. He knew there was very little chance the voltage would be out of range, but I really appreciate that he doesn't have an ego that prevents him from taking the one minute to get his meter out and make 100% sure things were working properly. It's what a true professional does. Joe charged me the cost of the part and the small amount of time spent on labor. Talk about fair. I gave him an extra $20 as I knew this wasn't some shade tree mechanic who just repaired my vehicle. Having lived in Elk Grove for only a couple of years, finding Engine Joe was a blessing. I had a 9 am appointment with this guy this morning at his auto body shop. He has no sign already a bad sign hes unprofessional. But anyways i called to try find out where his shop is at and he calls me back to tell me that he had an emergency service and he would come within an hr. Of all the years going to auto body shop this is the first ever guy to tell me ot wait an hr cause he does emergency service on other cars. Even though my appointment was booked he basically says screw the customer that goes out of their way and time to show up on time and help out some friend about their car problems. If anything should be an emergency it should be a brand new customer that shows up to his shop and probably could of been a long time customer that would of told friends to try his shop out. Now because he wants to play favorites with customers even ones that aren't even at his shop he loses a customer, networking and now has 1 star on yelp. I hate to leave bad reviews but he wasted my time gas money and also another passenger time and money that was going to give me a ride back home.
