Today I had a root canal on a wisdom tooth, not easy. I have had many root canals over the years, and Dr. Greg Newman was the best practitioner by far. He explained everything before, during, and after. He repaired my tooth with precision, sensitivity, and a bit of humor, and went out of his way to be accommodating to me. Afterwards, he provided me with meds to reduce any possible inflammation ----and even called me that evening to check on me. One does not see this level of professionalism along with a caring attitude. It is so rare. So, I felt strongly about writing a glowing review.

I have had many dental procedures plus 2 implants, so I know what to expect. After a good interaction while going over the procedure, Dr Martel applied topical numbing and then injected Novocain. It hurt the usual amount, & I handled it by quietly crooning. She told me to "Stop that" and breathe. I then used my other pain coping mechanism - huffing, much like Lamaze breathing. She told me again to stop or I'd hyperventilate. At this point I interrupted her to say that this is how I handle pain & I've never hyperventilated. She informed me that I was making HER uncomfortable. I replied that I was the one getting the shot & I was worried more about my own comfort. This time she commented that it "doesn't have to go like this." There was no way I would let her drill my tooth with an attitude like that. Dr Martel had no compassion from the very first step, & I could not trust her if things went bad once my nerves were exposed. She was completely unsympathetic to my physical or mental comfort, plus outright rude in her handling of the situation. And they charged me $55 for her services! Insult to injury!

Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. SHOULD OWN ITS GREED!…read moreOn Tuesday after a few months with a mild toothache I went to see my dentist. He took x rays and told me that the tooth required immediate extraction because of infection rapidly approaching the nerve. He instructed me to find an oral surgeon before the end of the week. New to the area, I called my insurance carrier to help me find a local oral surgeon who could extract my tooth without delay. My insurance identified Paul G Smith (a doctor within Plan) at Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. in Pottstown PA (1 hour drive from where I lived). I called Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. and explained the urgency of my condition. I was given an appointment for tooth extraction 1.30 pm on Friday. I was relieved. I offered to email recent X-rays. The receptionist declined. I thought this odd but did not question further. Friday morning after a painful and restless night I called to confirm arrangements. I wanted to make sure there were no loose ends given the urgency of the extraction and also the long travel distance (1 hour each way). This time a different receptionist answered. The woman explained there would be no extraction because my insurance required a prior authorization. This "new information" was never disclosed to me when I made the appointment or when I called my insurance even though I made clear in both conversations the urgency of my condition. The receptionist explained that I would require new x rays and a letter written by the doctor to be sent to my insurance in order to be granted the authorization required. I asked her how long this would take and she continued that it would take 7 to 10 days for me to get extraction. When in a panic I told her that I could not possibly wait that long with the pain I was experiencing and asked what I could do she said that I could keep the appointment and proceed with extraction if I agreed to pay "out of pocket". She would not provide an exact price, specifying only that the procedure would not be less than $775. I was shocked and demoralized. I could not possibly afford to pay "out of pocket". At the same time delay was jeopardizing my health as the infection spread. I ended the conversation indicating I would call my insurance to see if there was a way to speed up the process given the pain and--more importantly--health implications. I called my insurance somewhat upset. I asked why (given the seriousness of my condition) the approval process was not made transparent to me. Insurance stated that there was no Pre-approval requirement for doctors within Plan. The receptionist at Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. had scapegoated the insurance carrier as a cover up. Insurance was not pleased and suggested I call back Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. office to let them know that if the office was unclear about the insurance process then the insurance carrier would be happy to explain. Relieved by what I just learned I called back and the same receptionist I had talked to earlier answered the phone. I explained with excitement that no Pre-authorization was required with my Plan. As such Paul G. Smith at Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. could perform the extraction immediately. I was put on hold. The receptionist returned to the line a minute later. She explained she had moved away from the reception area -I guess so other patients would not hear- she recited the following: "It is the practice's policy to first have an appointment with a patient before scheduling a procedure". Presumably Paul G. Smith at Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. could take X-rays and proceed immediately based upon findings. For purely profit motives, however, it decided to create two independent insurance billing events. In short, generating more money while putting a patient's health at risk. Is this in keeping with the Hippocratic Oath? All this notwithstanding Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. knowingly booked an appointment on a false premise that I would have my tooth extracted at my initial appointment. More disturbingly when confronted with this deceit, attempted to cover up its misrepresentation by shifting blame to my insurance carrier. Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. actions were immoral, unethical and unconscionable. I cancelled my appointment and vowed to share my experience. Before you consider Pottstown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Inc. understand its primary motive is PROFIT. DECEIT, MISREPRESENTATION and LYING are its tactics. Think about it. Unbeknownst to me it would knowingly have me drive for more than 2 hours only to have me wait another week in pain all the while putting my health at risk solely for profit. UNCONSCIONABLE.

When I discovered I had deep periodontal pockets, I went into full research mode. Most…read moreperiodontists I found had either horror stories in their reviews or a mixed bag I wasn't willing to gamble on. Not with what I now know is at stake. Here's why this mattered so much to me: I recently learned I have elevated Lp(a), a genetic marker for cardiovascular risk. One in 5 people have it and most don't know because doctors don't routinely test for it. And the bacteria that thrive in deep periodontal pockets, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, are directly linked to the same things that could kill me. Research has found P. gingivalis in the brains of Alzheimer's patients and in arterial plaque in 100% of cardiovascular disease patients studied. F. nucleatum has been identified in colorectal cancer tumors. These bacteria cause systemic inflammation, which is the last thing someone with genetic cardiovascular risk needs circulating through their body. And research shows that traditional scaling and root planing alone can leave 15% or more of bacteria behind in deep pockets and dentinal tubules. For someone like me, that wasn't acceptable. A note to anyone reading this: Lp(a) significantly increases your lifetime risk of heart attack, stroke, and aortic valve disease. You can't lower it with diet or exercise. It's not included in a standard lipid panel. If you don't know your number, ask for the test. It could save your life and change how you approach your entire health, including your dental care. Because if you have this marker, bacteria hiding deep in periodontal pockets aren't just a dental problem. They're actively increasing your already elevated cardiovascular risk. So I did what I do: I researched. Extensively. I wasn't just looking at reviews. I dug into Dr. Hatam's entire background. Where she studied, where she trained, her credentials, her approach to periodontal care. I was willing to drive far outside my area if I had to. But Dr. Hatam checked every box. And then she exceeded my expectations before I even walked through the door. I left an after hours message expressing urgency, and she personally called me back while the office was closed. That one gesture told me everything about her ethics and her genuine concern for patients. Most doctors wouldn't bother. She did. I explained my concerns, and Dr. Hatam didn't dismiss me or rush me. She listened, truly heard me, and agreed to perform a laser assisted deep cleaning to maximize bacterial elimination. The day of my procedure, I was filled with anxiety. Dr. Hatam dismantled that anxiety with a combination of professionalism, genuine care, and (I have to mention this) a sense of humor. She read me perfectly, knowing I was the type of patient she could joke around with, even poke a little fun at, to put me at ease. And it worked. She has this warmth that she just exudes. One of those rare people you meet in life and intuitively know is good to the core. Her bedside manner is matched only by her expertise. You feel genuinely cared for, not processed. She naturally puts you at ease in a way that can't be taught. Here's the thing: Dr. Hatam doesn't need my review. Her portfolio of five star reviews (she has a couple hundred on Google) speaks for itself. But I'm writing this anyway because when you find a doctor like this in life, you hold onto them forever. And you tell other people. As for insurance? Most plans cover at least a portion if not all of periodontal treatment, and Dr. Hatam's office will submit the bill to your insurance. But honestly, even if mine covered nothing, I wouldn't care. Getting rid of cancer linked, dementia linked, inflammation causing bacteria is priceless. If I could go back in time and tell my non flossing self (yes, I'm embarrassed to admit I was never a flosser) what we now know about the oral microbiome, that it's just as important as your gut microbiome for overall health and cancer prevention, I would. But I can't turn back time. What I can do is take action now, and Dr. Hatam made that possible. Find her. Keep her. You won't regret it.
