I had a group beginner lesson with Owen in Sep. 2018 in Encinitas. He is very friendly and such a great instructor! I've taken surf lessons with different schools in the past where I go in the water with many other students and they just teach me "paddle" and "pop" on the board. I really liked that Encinitas Surf Lessons teach students in much smaller group and pay attentions to each student more. Owen took time to teach me how to position myself on the board, pop up properly step by step, and he gave me lots of advice in the water. I'll start by saying I am an absolute beginner/novice at surfing, so if you have experience may want to move on from my post, (but still consider this outfit for their overall approach). This was a life changer for me and my wife Laura We called Jason on a whim on a Saturday afternoon and they were already booked out that day, but he got us with Chad (who is AWESOME) for Sunday. Jason said to get the most out of the entire process go two days. Besides being beat up and sore all over, I am so glad we did. Back to Chad... super cool kid from NoCal who is a student at one of the local universities. He was patient and aggressively pushed us at the same time to get out of our comfort zones. It resulted in me catching my very first wave on my very first attempt, Laura caught on her second try and we never looked back..... Both of us were so tired but so elated and by day 2 we were surfing in swells I would have never thought I'd attempt!!! I want to stress that our experience may not be same as everyone's, so don't want to set too high of expectations for other beginners. I think our experience came from Chads quick assessment of our abilities to pick up the required techniques and then he had us in he water in 10 minutes. By the end of day two, Chad was like an old friend so after catching amazing waves that morning, we went out for Tacos! Couple of things to stress. Be patient, expect to get beat on by the power of the ocean, and PADDLE..... (Then paddle some more, then some more) be ready for your arms to become jelly! Ive been to Cali a handful of times now, and each time brings wonderful, rich unique experiences. I have to say this one tops them all... I am now bruised a little, sore all over from using way different muscles than I am used to, and HAPPY! I fly out in a couple of hours to return to my corporate life, but all I want to do now is surf every day... if you're thinking at all about trying it..... DO IT!!! You will not regret it. read more

I contacted Jason on behalf of prAna to set up a group surf event with 7 people and one of our Surf ambassadors. Jason was super flexible with our group, even moving from his normal lesson location to somewhere more convenient for the 7 of us. We shot down to Beacon's early in the morning and Jason gave us a good on-the-beach lesson before we hit the water. The waves were pretty choppy, but I have to hand it to the guys--they handled it great and EVERYONE caught a wave that day. It was AWESOME! Most of us it was our first time catching waves. So happy we called Encinitas Surf Lessons to arrange lessons for our 12 yo daughter this weekend. Jason was quick to call us back and explain how the lessons work, and the night before the lesson Owen (the instructor) texted us where to meet in the morning. I absolutely never give low reviews unless they are deserved, and this one star is most definitely deserved. Let me begin by saying that this review is solely based on Jason's personality, and the way he handles his clients, not his teaching ability. If you could deal with a volatile, temper driven, individual, then go for it. If you are looking for a nice, chilled, surfing instruction, LOOK ELSEWHERE. That is not what you'll get with Jason. He is mean, pushy (literally STALKS YOU to send a down payment and sign a release before you even made a decision to go with him), he is angry, needs to take "breathing breaks" to handle his anger (yes, in front of his clients), and the best part? When we went to tip him at the end (even though he did NOT deserve it, especially after how he treated us and then how he cut our lesson short because we had to "wash his boards"), he said to us "thats right. now you're being smart". Dude, you have the WORST attitude I have ever encountered, and I will definitely not be using you, or referring you to anyone. In a place with so much competition, you better be bringing you best self forward. Surf instructors are a dime a dozen in socal, buddy. Get with it, or change careers that don't make you want to take "breathers" because you are so angry. read more

I have gone out with Jason 4 times already. I bought a package deal of three lessons first and now on my second set. He is a stand up guy, easy to communicate with by either email or text or a phone call. I had already been surfing for a couple of years but wanted to learn how to catch better waves, learn more about the ocean and improve paddeling. I am leaning a lot and the money has been well worth it. Highly recommend Jason because he is very one on one and gives personalized lessons. And by the way, the dude can freaken surf! My association with Jason started when I contacted several surf schools to find one from which my daughter and I could take lessons. On the phone Jason just seemed to care so much about the quality of the overall experience rather than just the simple mechanics of learning to stand on a surfboard. Even though we live in Orange and are an hour drive from Encinitas, the trek has been well worth it. Surfing is a lifestyle for Jason, and his lessons portray that. His instruction is great. We actually stood and surfed in our first lesson. But, Jason also emphasizes the parallels with life (staying calm, enjoying the moment, overcoming challenges, etc...), and the lessons have really been a positive life experience. We're looking forward to our third lesson (do at least the package of three - and its a smokin deal) and are considering more. I highly recommend Jason and his instructors for your surf experience. You aren't just getting some teenager who is earning an hourly rate to teach you how to surf. Such an epic experience. Jason worked with my girlfriend and I on two different days. The first day was to big but he kept with us and on the second it was really small. He patiently waited with us to catch as many waves as possible. He was prompt, professional, knowledgeable, and made us feel at ease despite our lack of experience. We spent about 20-30 minutes on the beach just learning some basics before we went into the water. So, I've lived in San Diego since 2000. Many of my friends at the time surfed, however I didn't take the plunge. Now, fast forward to present day. My father in law is an avid surfer. He finally convinced me to learn how to surf. I started searching online for local surf schools. I came upon Jason's website, it had a friendly feel to it and fair pricing. I sent a request for more information and within an hour I received a response, which gave me a good feeling. I received some paperwork to fill out and sent it where it needed to go. Shortly after that I paid a deposit and planned my lessons to work around my schedule. Jason was very flexible, which was awesome. I showed up and of course I was nervous and the oldest in the class, however Jason's laid back demeanor helped me feel comfortable. After some simple exercises and basic surf instructions I found myself paddling out into the white water of South Ponto beach. Jason's favorite words to say were "paddle, paddle, paddle". I still hear those words in my mind today when I surf. No doubt it was a surreal experience to catch my first wave and one learns a new respect for the power of water. If you want to learn how to surf safe, FAST and with confidence, Jason is the man. He's an awesome communicator and will answer any questions you may have. We were in town for a work weekend and decided a few weeks before to give surfing a try with Rob before we flew out that Monday. Very happy we did! There is a calm / peacefulness about Rob that is relaxing from the start so that helped since one of us had never been surfing and the other hadn't been in many years. The weather was cloudy but Rob provided a lot of background and detail to surfing that we quickly didn't notice it anymore, a lot of knowledge since he's been surfing since was 12. We wouldn't hesitate to take another lesson with Rob the next time we are in town and also hear an update on his work with veterans with PTSD!
