You can get to the beaches, downtown, or the Zoo in 15-20 minutes. Tons of chain restaurants and some decent local spots if you know where to look. 3 stars because it's useful but not a destination. Good for shopping and convenience, not for vibes.

It's a pretty safe neighborhood, I have friends and family that lives here and I've been working in this area for years. It can get busy definitely on holidays, kids school breaks and weekends. Be prepared if you plan on hanging around this area on the weekends and holiday breaks; traffic can be hectic as well. Yes, you can fish at the SD river! You will find this huge sculpture in the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, along the rail tracks…read moreand across from the Convention Center. It was made in 1995 and is the work of Mel Edwards. It is made of polished stainless steel and definitely grabs your attention on a sunny day. It is in excellent condition and is 20 feet tall, 25 feet wide and 15 feet deep. It is a pretty simple design but has a much deeper meaning. It is basically a large circle with a large broken chain running down its left side. Behind those pieces is a stainless arch. The arch serves as a spot for homeless to hang out under, as it provides a bit of protection from the elements and some seclusion. The artist intended it to serve as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and symbolizes breaking the chains of discrimination. On the ground in front of the sculpture you will find a plaque that reads: "along the way of life, someone must have the sense enough, and morality enough to cut off the chain of hate. This can only be done by projecting the ethic of love to the center of our lives." The plaque is in nowhere a good of shape as the sculpture is. It is kind of hard to read. This is a nice attention getting piece that definitely hypnotizes you. I really liked it and it gets a bonus point for the message it is conveying. There is metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance and it is right off of one of the stops for the local tram. Anyway, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

You will find this sculpture in Waterfront Park. You can not miss it. It sticks out like a sore…read morethumb. It is in a little circular area with benches around it. It has two names. Arbre de Serpents or its English translation, Serpent Tree. it was made in 1988 by Niki de Saint Phalle, who is known for colorful sculptures. It depicts a tree looking structure, with snakes where the branches would be. It is very colorful and made stained glass, mosaic tiles, polyester, and mirrors. It should be noted that de Saint Phalle adopted serpents as her signature motif for a perfume she produced to finance her Tarot Garden. There are a few of these these around the country Including New York and Washington DC. Th one in Missouri sits in the middle of a fountain and spits out water. I am not sure if this one has that capability, but it sure would be cool if it did. I really like this piece. It is creative and has some awesome artwork. The sculpture definitely grabs your attention with its bright colors and reflective glass. Parking to get a closer look is easy. There is metered street parking in front of the park where the sculpture is located. Anyway, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. Maybe coordinate it with a visit to Waterfront Park or some of the many attractions on the Pier across the street.
