I asked for advice from Greg today and was very taken aback. It was my first time visiting Encinal Nursery. Greg was extremely condescending and dismissive. I approached him and said, "I don't know much about gardening and I have a feeling you do! So I'm wondering if you could help me. I have hydrophobic soil, and my lawn is patchy." He said, "Well you shouldda used compost." I said, "Let's try again, and not start with 'you shouldda.'" I smiled and continued, "We had the seed put in in October, and they used compost. We will be reseeding and re-composting in the fall..." He interrupted and said, "Well I have some advice if you would LISTEN." I said, "I'm listening." He said, "I have some fertilizer with soil conditioner." I said, "Well, I used soil conditioner yesterday." I never raised my voice or took an attitude with him. I just said, "You have expertise, right? And I respect your expertise. Well, I also have expertise, in another field, and when people come to me for advice, I don't speak to them this way. So I'm going to leave now. Have a nice day." My grown son was with me. I asked him, "Am I crazy or was that man very rude?" My son said he couldn't believe the way Greg spoke to me. I looked him up afterward to be sure I wasn't naming the wrong person. It was the owner, Greg Dupuich. I will not be returning to this nursery, and I would not recommend going there as a woman. I have a feeling he would not have spoken to a man this way. Greg did not bother to take the time to understand my problem or ask basic diagnostic questions. When I got home I looked up some examples of questions a helpful specialist could have asked: -What is your soil type? -How deep down is the soil dry? -How old is the lawn? -Have you added any bark, mulch, or compost recently? -Have you tried using a liquid wetting agent or aerator yet? -Are you looking to buy a tool to fix this, or a chemical/soil product? Those are the kinds of questions a skilled, knowledgeable person would ask, and I would have appreciated it if he had taken the time. I am so glad I stumbled onto this place! They have a huge selection, and all the plants in the nursery looked happy and healthy. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helped recommend some varieties they thought would work well for us in Pacifica. They also have a really nice section of California native plants. Yesterday afternoon May 10, 2025 we drove more than 30 minutes to go to this nursery because my autistic child wanted to purchase some plants for me as a Mother's Day gift and go to Michael's to purchase some pots to paint to put them in. He also wanted to see if there was any hope for his bonsai tree that wasn't looking too great. As we entered the nursery my autistic child was looking at the plants. Last visit here was great, tons of customer service and even someone who looked like us "black" worked there. This time the vibe was very strange. When I asked about the bonsai plant a man who worked there was very mean and said it's dead. He said you were supposed to do this and that. The mean tone was not ok and it was like we did something personal to this person. Mind you there was a child an autistic child present hearing about his plant. You should have seen the hurt in my child's eyes. My autistic child has so much empathy towards plants, animals, trees. We went to Muir Woods and he didn't understand why us humans would surround redwood trees with dead trees to make wooden paths, wooden barriers, and wooden benches. He said it would be the same if we saw things around us made from human skin. Anyway maybe our presence in the store was not wanted. My autistic child was wandering happily through the store trying to find the perfect plants for me. He found two and wanted to explore more. So I approached the counter and there were two salespeople behind it. The same man with the rude tone and another person. I asked can I leave these two plants (you can see them in my photograph) on the counter my son is not done shopping yet. They said yes. This is important to note that my autistic child spent a lot of time picking the plants he wanted. What happened next could have caused heartbreak, let down, and perhaps a meltdown (which would look like tons of sadness because his original choice had been taken from him). We explore the outside and inside again. We arrive at the counter there was one salesperson with two other ones looking busy not too far from the counter that saw us waiting while the other one helped a customer. No one stopped what they were doing to even ask if I needed help. When someone finally helped us I said I want to purchase the two plants I was told I could leave up here. The person said what plants in a rude way. I'm thinking to myself oh no! My autistic child is looking distressed and while they were looking I told my child let's go look for two better ones to take his attention off of his original one being put back after I asked permission to place them there. He choose two other ones and then while I was paying he skipped off to look for a hanging plant to hang in our backyard. The staff said the plants were put back without an apology or anything. We were the only Black customers in the nursery and we were the only ones that were not approached to ask if we needed any assistance. If this business doesn't want Black people spending money here it really showed yesterday 5/10/25 afternoon. And if these plants weren't for me for Mother's Day I wouldn't even purchased them after they put the original ones back that my autistic child chose. All I saw yesterday after I spent over $40 on two small plants, sunflower seeds, and a hanging plant for $24.50 was angry faces as they watched me use Apple Pay to make my purchase. Please do better because you lost a customer that happened to be Black and buys her autistic child who loves plants anything he wants no matter the cost. Let me repeat that whatever he is into there is no price point. He could have spent $200+ in your nursery and that would have been fine, and I would have paid by debit not credit. Next time smiles and great customer service shouldn't be limited to people who are not Black. read more

I've gone here twice and each time, the staff seemed like they didn't want to help me. I don't know a thing about plants and when I asked for help, they made me feel stupid for asking. The people here is sooooo nice. Very knowledgeable and very helpful. I do not have a green thumb. Im am trying to, but im just starting out. The staff members here are very understanding and they are very honest. As much as my wild eyes wanting all the plants, they gave me their honest opinions that honestly saved me money because they will probably just die because i do not have the right conditions for the plants to thrive. On top of this, you see a lot of regulars coming in and out. They have a great selection and it rotates a lot, so you can always find new things here. They do a great job with taking care of their plants as i have had yet to have a plant die on me once ive brought them home. While finding parking in the streets may be a pain, but it's worth it when you find what you need. read more

The folks at Encinal Nursery are amazing! Laurel, Greg, Gary. Accidently they delivered a mislabeled plum tree to me last year. It was not until the tree fruited this year, that the mistake recognized. And the error originated with the tree supplier. The Encinal Nursery delivered a new plum tree to my home this week. And took back the tree that had been misidentified on the tree tag. I appreciate their effort to make the plum tree situation right. Best houseplant nursery in the East Bay, hands down (and I've been to almost all of them). They always have something new and interesting, especially Hoyas and other popular houseplants. On top of that, their prices are reasonable, have a great pottery selection, AND offer to drill holes for planters without. Great service that no in else has done. Staff have always been polite to me! I suggest following them on IG and watching their stories to get the latest scoop on the new (and maybe high-demand!) plants. Some babies I took home with me: Begonias, Colocasias, Stromanthe, Peace lilies, Venus flytrap. My plants are still thriving at home so I'm glad they are so healthy to begin with. Encinal has a wonderful selection of both outdoor and indoor plants, pots (ask for a drainage hole if you'd like!) as well as soil. They are dog friendly so bring your furry buddy! During COVID, they taste necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. Workers are wearing masks and the nursery is mostly outdoor. Encinal Nursery is well worth my drive from San Jose. This is one of my favorite nurseries to go to! Situated in the lovely Alameda neighborhood, there's already a sweet small town feel to the nursery. Unfortunately they do not have a parking lot, it's all street parking so that's the only downside. Lots of plants outside but I typically look for my indoor houseplants. I loved their little greenhouse where they have all sorts of succulents and greens. I bought two cute succulents and they have already grown so much afterwards! They also sell lots of different pots and saucers, very reasonable price too. They drill holes if you need it! read more

I recently had the staff at Encinal Nursery help with with some plant surgery - my Chinese Money Plant had propagated like crazy and it seemed beyond me to separate all the little babies from the mother plant. So I took it to Encinal and they did the work on it and I came out with six beautiful plants - mother plant and five baby plants - all really healthy. I really appreciate all they did with this plant and the care they took with it. Amazing. I also have them pot up some of my purchases and they do a lovely job with those too. WHEN: Monday @10am During Covid-19 the business hours are changed to 10am-4pm everyday. There's one way to enter, and different way to exit. All staff are wearing masks, and the majority of this nursery is outdoors. It's better to come during the weekdays where it would be less people and better chances of parking. I lucked out and found one right out front! I was hear longer than expected because I am a rookie when it comes to plants. But it's okay because Ryan, a new staff there was super helpful! He was able to tell me what plant I was holding (ones that didn't have a label). Otherwise most plants come with the name and brief instructions on how to care for them. It's my second time here, but I came out with (tax not included): ALGAONEMA - CHINESE EVERGREEN - $21 This gorgeous plant was a 6 inch. I could have paid about $4 more for the other one with larger leaves. But Ryan told me that this plant will get there in 2-3 months...plus there were more leaves in this one! MONSTERA ADANSONII - BLUE SWISS CHEESE - $6.99 These tiny starters were cute, but I made the mistake of handling them too much during the day, splitting the two stems in separate pots. So yeah they are dead now. It's okay, I bought 3 of these. PEPEROMIA OBTUSIFOLIA - BABY RUBBERPLANT - $3.49 This adorable house plant was so reasonably priced! This was the plant that had no label and Ryan was able to tell me what it is! EDNA'S BEST POTTING SOIL (20QT) - $7.99 Gotta have soil since these will need to be potted! They have a variety selection of soil, in different sizes! I bought the bigger one since its only a couple of bucks more. I had a great time here. Definitely coming back. read more

I love this local nursery. I've been so many times over the last couple months that when I get in my car, my phone automatically shows me the route there -- ok thanks for shaming me, iPhone. Great selection of indoor and outdoor plants, refreshed throughout the week. They also sell pots and drill drainage holes in them upon request. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They'll help you repot a plant you're purchasing if you ask, and if something is going wrong with a plant you've purchased, you can bring it back so they can help you troubleshoot. They're active on social media (IG @encinalnursery) and responsive over email (orders@encinalnursery.com). And if you need a small plastic planter pot or two (under 6"), it's free. It's a double-edged sword to live so close to this nursery. I've spent a decent amount here in the last few months. read more

MY WEEKLY HANGOUT I am here every week. This place is so beautiful to just walk around and relax your mind after a long day of work or as a morning refresher. The workers here are all so helpful. I have called in so many times for stock checks and ask the workers there a million questions. They are very helpful and honest. They have a wide range of plants from Rare Philodendrons, Trending Hoyas, Trees, flowers, garden plants. I buy them all here. They also have a great selection of pots, garden supplies and seeds. I've been coming here for years, this is 1 of 2 go to spots for my vegetables. It's right down the street, so it works out well for me. The staff is always helpful, sometimes it's tough to talk to so.eone because everyone seems to have a question when I do, but they manage it pretty good. Their organic selection has grown, so that's good for me. They also delivered a tree for me, since I didn't have a truck to get it home, of course there's a delivery fee. I love coming here. Great variety of indoor/outdoor plants, helpful staff, and good prices compared to other nurseries in my area. I especially like the indoor plant area because there are options for people with limited lighting in their homes. I called ahead for a monstera adansonii after not being able to find it anywhere and they held the last one for me. They also have a variety of pots and offer to drill holes if needed. Parking can be a little challenging; there is only street parking. I am usually able to find a space within a couple minutes walk though. read more

Encinal Nursery is another reason the people of Alameda are so lucky! This nursery caters to the parent with a curious child that wants amazement: Buy a Venus Fly Trap. It gets shopped by the landscaper: ground cover and much more. My interest here has been to revive a hobby. With so much time on my hands due to this protracted national catastrophe (The Dash Nineteen is what I call it) it seemed like good timing. The plants are fresh and look beautiful. Got my dream plant, a Ficus Audrey bush variety, here last month ($90)...who is/was(?) beautiful, but seems to have mysterious damage - thrips? overwatering? :( There were three stems - one has completed rotted away (the stem turned black and mushy and was just nasty), one has 2 leaves left, and the last one is dropping leaves. At first I thought it was normal bc ficus don't like to be moved and tend to shed when adjusting to new environment, but after the stem rotted, I lifted the nursery pot out of the cache to check the roots more closely and found a couple of thin, long black bugs (thrips) at the bottom of the pot. None of my other plants (including my healthy Ficus Lyrata and Ficus Tineke in the same room) seem to have this. Treated the top of the soil with diluted neem oil and rubbing alcohol and hopefully it recovers?? The only time I watered it was 3 weeks after I got it, so I doubt it was me overwatering it. I don't know what to do with it now...every time I look at it I just feel like it was a total waste of money and I know I should probably quarantine it before throwing it out, but...asdfgjkl; read more

These folks give the BEST plant advice. I've been going here for a while but am posting a review today in honor of the two guys behind the counter on Monday who gave me the best advice and product recommendation for some annoying fungus gnats I had in one of my indoor potted plants. Repotted, applied the product, bam, INSTANTLY solved. Also I love that they sell planter pots with holes and without, but they can drill a hole in the non-holed pots. As a plant newb I've learned that I need those drainage holes and other plant stores don't offer this service!! The only thing that stresses me out is the lack of parking but I've always been able to find a spot within a block or so. read more

I started gardening in late March with some veggies and fruit plants and only 1 out of 16 plants didn't make it so I think that's a good sign for me to branch out to other kinds of plants.. I went here this afternoon to check out their selection of succulents and cactus. I wanted to start growing them and *maybe* eventually turning them into beautiful open air terrariums to gift to my fam and friends. Anyway, I had a good experience at my first ever nursery visit! (I don't think Home Depot is counted as one! Haha) the staff were really helpful and knowledgeable and didn't make me feel like I'm such a noob when it comes to these type of plants (even if I really am!
