This isn't the type of adventure you can show up to on a whim. You have to schedule a visit in advance. I scheduled a date and time over the phone. They took my credit card info, a contact number and my kids' names. The first date I scheduled was cancelled due to inclement weather. Pirate Adventures called and cancelled the adventure about three hours prior to when it was supposed to start. I elected to reschedule right then. I was instructed to arrive a half hour before our adventure so the kids could get their faces painted and pick out a sash. We parked on the street a few blocks away not realizing they have a parking lot. We checked in, the kids were given name tags with their name and an alliterative adjective (ie Zig Zag Zora and Kung Fu Kieran) and then reported to the face painting and sash picking area. After face painting kids and adults boarded the boat and the Chesapeake part of the adventure began. The captain went over a few safety measures with the adults while his assistant went through guidelines with the kids. The adventure has a whole story with different parts involved that kept the seven kids on our adventure entertained. Ages ranged from probably three to fourteen. These parts included a map search, treasure hunt, key finding expedition, pirate fight and a final pirate bounty quest. For the adults, we just hung out under a shaded portion of the boat. I got up to interact with my kids a few times and to snap some pictures. Mostly I just enjoyed the boat ride. The whole adventure lasted almost two hours (counting face painting). If you have kids that love to pretend and don't mind riding a boat, Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake might be right up their alley.

However, I do think this is a great ride. Anyone who rides a wooden coaster definitely knows they are on the rougher side vs a more modern coaster. For being 100 years old I really expected this coaster to be all bad like super rough and yeah but that wasn't the case on my ride in the front row as I felt it was decently smooth for being this old and wooden! I'm pretty sure this is the oldest coaster I've ever ridden and I take that into consideration when I justify the roughness of the ride as for being this old it's not that bad it's good to see that Six Flags America is keeping this 100 year old coaster in this good of condition in our nations capitol! Overall I expected a lot less of this ride and what I found on this very day is a great old school coaster that's still kicking it 100 years later so make sure you get to ride it as you never know what might happen to it in the future with all these new Hybrid Coasters popping up!

On 8 May 1999 I heard advertisements for The Joker's Jinx . I remember I didn't like the ads for the ride, but I knew I would certainly ride this ride. The day I went to the park, I rode many rides, because I know the line for this ride would be long no matter what time I went. When I finally arrived to the ride, the line was long, but there were refreshments for those in line. The lemonade hit the spot and I had plenty of time before I rode the ride to get the fluid into my system. When I saw the paint job for the Joker, I never thought emerald green and purple went well together, BUT THEY DO. Oh, I was young back then. I even bought a Joker's Jinx tee shirt. At that time I wore a large tee shirt. I don't remember what happened to the shirt, but I know I through...no...I believe I gave it to good will. When I finally got to the gated area, you had to pass by several mirrors that made you look distorted. For my first experience I went straight to the back where I had to wait a little longer. Why, because the rear is tighter? Because I like it in the rear? Or because the rear of the car is the fastest. This answer is the best answer. The front is the slowest, but the rear end gets pushed forwards because of the force of the front of the car. The middle seats are a natural point. In this case since it is a blast coaster it pretty much doesn't matter until you feel the rear end of the car moving faster from the pulling of the rest of the cars. The spiraling looks to the side way turns make this rollercoaster a lot of fun. Listening to one of the operator say "Hands Up, hands up, I wanna see your hands." Once everyone's hands were up, he would hit the go button and everyone in the coaster cars would shoot forwards. I would love to say The Joker's Jinx started the blast coasters craze, but it wouldn't be true. Still, I had a lot of fun. This ride is a steel ride and steel rides have been know to be smoother than the wooden rollercoasters. I wouldn't mind going on this ride again. I would call this a high thrill ride.

Anyway, what I love about this wheel is that dogs are allowed! I try to include my dog in as many social outings that he can go on to ensure he has experiences too. When the weather gets colder, it's much harder to find activities he can partake in so I was excited to learn that I didn't have to leave him at home when spending time with my nieces. The four of us purchased tickets at the venue and then headed to the queue. If you have small kids (or a small dog), there is a stroller parking area that you can place your stroller while you ride. It's not secure though so be sure to keep any valuables on your person. The line was short and we ended up with a swing all to ourselves. They are pretty roomy; the previous group had about 7 average sized to bigger sized adults and most of them could fit in one carriage (though not with much room to spare). In the summer this may be okay; the swings are temperature controlled. With the cold weather, I found the temperature to be a bit too warm. Particularly if you dress in many layers as I do, being bundled up in a swing with hot air blowing on you is pretty miserable. To ensure you get your money's worth, the ride is about 5-8 mins I think. You go around at a languid pace about 4x and the last 5th time is the longest as it stops to allow patrons to exit the swing. My dog did pretty well for his first time. He was a little nervous, but with soothing pets and holding him, he calmed down. Perhaps next time I'll bring some treats. He did have a bit of a spell toward the end when he had a birds eye view of people walking. Speaking of, the views from the wheel are quite nice. You can see the National Monument and others from up there. All in all, this is a nice outing! There are a ton of restaurants to eat afterward and around the holidays, they have a market. The latter had nothing of particular interest but it was nice to get out and walk around. While the outdoor space is super dog friendly, the restaurants did not appear to be so. The outdoor patios lacked any heating lamps, and therefore aren't suitable during cold weather. I also couldn't tell if dogs were allowed there. Perhaps your best bet is to have a couple of people and send one in to a fast food spot to bring food to sit near the courtyard (?) where films are shown.

We took a three-year-old there for an outing in bright slightly-cool weather. Up until Easter, they had easter-egg hunts all day, separated each time into age-groups, smartly organized so that the kids trade in the eggs afterwards for a goodie-bag, so the competition for eggs wasnt too fierce. We took a train ride around the farm. And the newest pony was still getting used to the situation, so instead of riding, we joined in gentle grooming and pampering. A lovely fun morning! There's low-cost tickets for entry and for some of the activities, and there's lots of free parking. Their produce stand is open July-Sep.
