Speaking as someone who has moved more than her share of times (I believe this was #20, and it's not like I'm old), I've dealt with quite a few movers. I had decided that as long as you hire a professional moving company, they're fairly comparable.
I stand corrected.
This particular move for me would have been the move from hell. Everything about it was sucking hard-core, from the lack of time to prepare for the move, to the fact that I was downsizing into an apartment half the size of the one I was leaving, and trying to get rid of as much stuff as possible in very little time (yes, I have a lot of stuff). Everything about it sucked, that is, except the movers.
The evening before my scheduled move, when I still hadn't finished packing and was about to drop from exhaustion, I called Mike at EMS in a panic to ask if I could reschedule. Of course they were fully booked for a solid week, but he assured me that they would pack whatever I hadn't finished. He reassured me that everything would be fine and instructed me to go get some sleep and not stress out over it. After all, he told me, I had the "best movers in the city" handling my move.
By some stroke of luck, or genius, the powers that be at EMS had decided to bestow upon me a "double crew" for my move (as well as the move scheduled right after mine). I figured that meant 6, maybe 8 guys. I was completely shocked when I realized there were TEN GUYS! Yes, TEN!!
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike and Dave, who ran everything seamlessly. I didn't catch the names of all of the other guys (just a few here and there), but I wish I could give them all the credit they deserve. They showed up right on time and did a quick walk-through to plan their attack. And then, attack they did.
In the time that I was packing up my computer and a few other things, they had cleared out my entire apartment. It wasn't until we arrived at the new place that I witnessed the phenomenon that is EMS. I watched in awe as every single one of the ten guys busted his butt (they were all running!). One of my neighbors even later said to me, "wow, your movers weren't screwing around." They were also all very nice and personable (okay, that may not be the most important quality in a mover, but it's a big plus).
Mike later told me that in our conversation the night before, he had just been trying to calm me down. But in making the claim that they're the "best movers in the city," he most definitely was NOT just saying that.
I would highly, HIGHLY recommend these guys! Their rates may be average, but that's the only thing average about them. I can honestly say that any time I move in the future, I'd like to hire EMS again. I apologize to them for that (but I'm getting rid of more stuff, I swear!).
Just for reference, the cost this time was the about same as my last move (with another company which will remain nameless), but last time was only 4 guys and a LOT more time (they insisted on wrapping everything I own in plastic).
There are a lot of movers out there. There are cheap movers, there are average movers. And then there are top-notch, above-and-beyond, you'll-be-amazed-by-them movers, and to my knowledge this category only has one moving company in it. You've found their page right here.
I've read reviews of a lot of businesses on Yelp (that's what made me choose EMS for my move), and up until now I've never felt the need to add any of my own. These guys were so impressive that I absolutely had to write one. (And I know I lack credibility with only one review, so now I'll begin my search for other businesses to review.) read more
