I've found that they have the best balance between "stand up" training and "on the ground" work, done in a safe, controlled environment, with great instructors who really work with the kids to create a positive environment. The training includes an emphasis on respect, not only for the instructors at the academy, but for parents, school teachers and their peers, helping them to become "bully proof" without becoming bullies themselves. Additionally, parents can train for free, in classes set up for them. My wife participates in the stand up and grappling classes. The higher belt folks are patient with the white belts and don't try to smash you down...at first, lol. They feel you out and try to give you space to work a bit, then methodically break down your defenses and submit you, hehe. Ion also offers kickboxing, fitness, and children's courses. I can sum this business up in one word: McDojo. I'm honestly sad because I wanted to like this…read moreplace, not for myself but for my kids. Unfortunately instead of being a place of learning, like my husband experienced taking karate as a child here in Durant, it's nothing more than an expensive belt factory. I expected a monthly fee, not a problem. What is a problem is having children test for their next belt within two weeks ($60 per test) of even starting. They haven't even learned anything worth testing for in literally 3 hours of overall practice time. And then to be told to expect them to test every two months if not more..that's not how this works. There is no set time that they should be ready to test. If you go to a class and look around you will see tons of children running around with different colored belts. Very young children. And there are quite a few with black belts. If that isn't the biggest indication that this is a McDojo, I don't know what is. So basically unless you have money to blow so that your kids can run around and have fun, and a lot of closet space for their spiffy colorful belts, I'd skip this place.
