I have lower back issues from being bent over shampooing people for years, bursitis in my shoulders from blow-drying, and a myriad of other repetitive stress issues. Chris has been a client of mine for a few years and has always said I should try a massage to help with the stuff I'm always complaining about. Hating massage as I do I've always politely declined his voodoo rubbing advances, in my estimation massage therapy is akin to seeing a witch doctor for cancer treatment, I'm all about good old Vicodin when I have an ache. So two things happened to land me in Chris's at home massage studio. #1 I woke up one morning unable to lift my left arm above my shoulder and when I went to the doctor she told me I should think about trying massage to alleviate some of the tension that was causing the lack of motion in my shoulder, this on it's own wouldn't have been enough. #2 the next day Chris was in for a haircut and saw me wincing while i was working and before he sat down he gently took hold of my shoulder and worked the giant knot that was bothering me and within a few minutes I felt like a new man, I scheduled an appointment right then and there. A few days later I find myself in his studio, in my skivies listening to ambient french jazz type music having the most relaxing experience of my life. One of the reasons I hate massage is the smarmy happy ending type vibe i get from most masseuses I've met, the other is that I CANNOT handle too much pressure and no matter how i explain this every masseuse tries to see if they can actually put a hand through my body and touch the table, I guess some people like that kinda S&M stuff but not for me I want a soothing calming massage. Chris gave me just that. He was really sensitive to my comfort and made sure i was cool the whole way through the process. If I have an injury or just have overworked and under stretched, Tom can usually solve it in one or two sessions. I have been receiving massage from Tom for at least 6 years now. I have only had massage from Julie a few times, but she was also very effective and I would definitely go again. Both are also able to offer stretching exercises and ergonomic suggestions to help prevent having the same problems again. Usually I can walk in and if I'm willing to wait for 15-20 minutes, they can fit me in. But calling ahead is best if you want a bigger chunk of time.

He provided the right amount of pressure and checked in with me on a regular basis. He totally got all of my knots out, and I had a TON, especially in my shoulder and upper back area. After the massage, he gave me some recommended stretches as well as tips to reduce the formation of more knots. He then tried a combination of deep tissue hilot and hot stone on me; I have had unpleasant deep tissue massages by other therapists in the past, but I decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did because it was amazing! He communicated with me during the entire experience to make sure everything was to my comfort level. This is easily the best massage I ever got. The next day, I received a call asking how i was feeling to make sure that I had no bad side effects post-massage. And on top of that, just yesterday I received a thank you card from them. Lester is a very friendly, polite, caring masseuse who asks for your feedback along the way and wouldn't dream of hurting you. Of course some aspects of the massage will be a bit painful (that's just how any effective massage is), but not once was I in any sort of excruciated state. Lester is trained in the art of Hilot, traditional Filipino massage. Hilot combines aspects of various Indian, Chinese, and Thai massage techniques and is easily one of the most effective massage styles I've experienced. Lester began with a traditional, deep tissue massage that was incredibly relaxing; I found myself on the edge of sleep more than a few times during my session. But it was also a dynamic experience; Lester had me position my arms in certain ways to better hit muscles in my back, bend my legs in certain ways to stretch and soothe muscles in my quads, calves and feet, and had me hold hot (not too hot!) stones to relax my ever-tense hand muscles. Which reminds me: hot stones! Lester incorporates hot stones into the massage, which felt incredibly nice. He also did Chinese cupping (puts a little candle on your back, lights it, quickly covers it with a glass cup to snuff the flame, then suction is created). I don't have extensive knowledge of either of these techniques, but they sure as heck felt nice. In addition, Lester used a little wooden Thai massage stick to work out the knots and tension in my hands and feet, and he really must have done an expert job because I'm having less pain than I can ever remember having. I'm currently sitting on my bed, back more relaxed, arms feeling giddily loose, legs no longer aching, hands and feet buzzing with calm, and just feeling better than I have in a while! Lester really works wonders, and he's friendly, skilled, professional, and caring to boot! GET A MASSAGE FROM HIM!

Overall, I thought the massage was fantastic. Honestly, it was one of the best ones I've had in a long time. I have to admit, I walked out of his office feeling a bit sore from the massage, but the soreness started to subside later that evening, and by the next morning, the soreness went away altogether. I was able to complete my morning jog without a problem. I also slept very well. Pros: 1) Introduction: 10-15min intake form, brief discussion - I like this b/c it gave me a chance to tell Chuck what was going on with my body and what I was looking for. It also gave him a chance to get to know me, and ask any questions before we began. 2) Room: It was setup very nicely, and had a calm, serene feel to it. The massage table was also very comfortable. As a classical music lover, I could not have asked for a better music selection. 3) Massage Pressure: Spot on with the pressure, I liked how he used the 1-10 scale, so I could always tell him what number/level pressure I was feeling. I appreciated how he always adjusted based on the number I gave. Any knots, adhesions, etc that were present before the massage were smoothed/ironed out by the end of the session. 4) Communication: This is of utmost importance, in my book, to ensure that the client is getting what s/he needs, and that the masseuse understands what s/he should (not) do. I felt his communication was perfect, we had constant dialogue throughout the hour which allowed us both to know what was going on. 5) Timing: Although the massage was scheduled for 1 hour = 60 minutes, he actually gave me a few extra minutes so that he could finish working on the muscle group that he wanted to, without rushing through that muscle. He said that he wanted to do a thorough job so that I would like the massage and feel good after. This is something that I very much appreciated, and find extremely rare amongst most massage therapists. Cons: This is just me being picky. But the only slight downside would be the location, as Chuck's office is a bit far from where I live. It is roughly a 30 min drive in good traffic. However, his location has nothing to do with the quality of service or his ability as a massage therapist, therefore I am not deducting any stars for this comment. It is very obvious from the start that Chuck has been performing massage therapy for a long time, and he really knows his muscles, but more importantly, he knows athletes' muscles, which is of key importance for someone like me. As a long distance runner for the past several years, it makes a huge difference to me, to be worked on by a therapist who understands athletes. If you need a massage, whether a relaxing one, or something with deep pressure, go see Chuck, as he will take excellent care of you.

I booked an hour with a well experienced masseuse that used to work at the Olympics! Bob walked me through what I can do to improve my movement after our sessions, including neuromuscular exercises when I'm home. Before going to him I had MAJOR cramps during menstrual cycles, so painful I couldn't walk. The cramps were potentially due to my tight psoas. Just 2 sessions with Bob, I no longer have that issue.
