As I was preparing for my departure from Norfork, I recalled that I was low on cigars and needed a fresh refill. A scan of local cigar establishments gave me the selection which included Emerson. A quick call was all it took, literally. I wanted a acid sampler and they not only had it, but did an immediate local delivery to me within an hour or so. I've been coming to this location for several years and I really like it a lot. One of the things that I like about Emerson's is that the staff are very knowledgeable. I'm not sure if there is a requirement for them to smoke each one of the cigars they carry but every cigar that I've been interested in they are familiar with and are able to give a substantial amount of information on it. Their knowledge on tobacco in general is pretty vast and they are good about educating you without talking down on you. The customer service here is solid. You're always greeted when you come in and the staff is always ready to help you find a specific smoke or something close to what you're interested in. You can order boxes from here, which I've done before but I'm not sure if you can order a box of cigars or loose pipe tobacco that they do not carry in the shop at all. Inside the shop you will find humidors and other accessories for your smoking pleasures. There is a walk-in humidor with cigars on both sides of the walls. The selection is good. They carry a decent amount of TAA cigars and some boutique smokes. But for the most part they have the popular name brand cigars that even most non-smokers are familiar with. In the rear of the shop there is a tv and lounge. The lounge fills in quick, this is not the spot to bring a large group to smoke but a small amount should be manageable. There is quite a selection here inside the humidor with hundreds of brands to choose, the staff gives good recommendations and knowledge about what fits your preference. If you like bulk, buy the box as it's the best value. We bought a 5-pack of davidoffs (smaller kind) for a great deal. Also cut them in the store for us. Unfortunately no matches. Guess they ran out. But it happens. The smoking lounge is where you congregate and hang. It gets cloudy yet contagious. The aroma of cigars being puffed will entice you to join and pretend you're a famous celebrity who enjoys a nice stogie. read more

When I walked in, I was welcomed by a young man. He was a great help and gave me some good suggestions. Cigars are a bit pricey with tax and all, but it was nice using there lounge. The lounge was small, but it had comfy chairs and the golf game on. My only problem was that it when the shop closes, it closes. There aren't many tobacco shops in Virginia Beach, especially ones dedicated solely to the sale of cigars! Emerson's has an incredible selection of smokes and accessories, all of which are more than reasonably priced. I honestly don't see the markup here. They do a phenomenal job of pricing and selecting the merchandise. The walk in humidor is stocked with a range of cigars covering all price points... they also regularly mark down cigars so there's always some type of sale going on. The premium cigars boast the most impressive price tag, certainly some of the cheapest I've ever seen. Humidification is on point too--right at that sweet spot where they're not too dry but not too moist either. Directly to the back of the shop is a lounge area. Seating about 7 - 10 people comfortably, this little haven offers a nice size flat screen and a wi-fi hot spot! The store itself is actually pretty big too, so there's more than enough room to smoke while viewing the products in the shop... no smoking in the humidor though (just to clarify because some shops/bars are ok with it). Customer service was great. I went in looking for the Xikar desktop lighter which they were out of, but they did check their other locations. Though they didn't have it I was referred to their website which is very informative. Aside from the sale of tobacco and accessories, they also offered amazing deals similar to those in the store. You can also stay up to date on various events throughout the year. With several different locations all throughout the Hampton Roads area, I plan to check out all of their locations. If you're curious about cigars and pipe tobacco, please don't hesitate to stop by and just ask anyone here for help. I've been here a few times now and everyone I've met was very knowledgeable and friendly. There are a good variety of brands and the staff can point you to a good $4 cigar as well as a $25 one. The fun part is the smoking "lounge' in the back of the store. They have a couple of big, deep leather couches, an easy chair, and a couple of stools surrounding a big screen TV. You're more than welcome to put in a movie, watch whatever is on TV, or turn on some music. There are a few sodas available and free coffee. It's a cozy place to to enjoy your smoke and kick back. While serving in the Navy up in Norfolk I picked up smoking cigars. I visited Emersons in VA Beach Blvd for my first cigar purchase. I was quickly assisted and they agreed with all my ideas of cigars I wanted to try so I knew I had researched properly. Sure enough, for the next 4 years I went back and back and back again. It still is to this day, my favorite cigar lounge. I visited as many events as I could. Thanks to them I was able to meet Rocky Patel, and Michael Giannini of LGC. The owner Scott is an absolutely wonderful person. He was nice enough to replace my Emerson's Xikar lighter after having lost mine 3 or 4 years down the road. He even sent me a complimentary fishing hat because he knows I love to fish. Over all Emerson's is a great establishment, full of helpful and knowledgable staff members that are more than happy to share their knowledge. I was greeted by a friendly employee almost immediately as I walked in. There is a huge walk-in humidor that takes up almost the whole left side of the store. Very impressive selection of cigars. The employee that greeted me when I walked in the store came in the humidor to see if I needed any help. I was very impressed with this. A friendly welcome and enough time to allow me to look around on my own and a non rushed followup to see if I need help. The store has cutters you can use if you don't have your own, which was nice because I was visiting the area on vacation and did not bring mine. The store also has complimentary matches. I was hoping for a torch lighter since that is what I am use to using. But I have to admit the matches made a nice souvenir. The cigar lounge is in the back of the store. Four comfortable leather chairs and 2 or 3 bar stools along the wall. Large flat screen TV on the wall. There were 3 guys in the lounge smoking and it was obvious that they were regulars at the store and all knew each other. Very friendly group. Great experience. read more

Generally it is a great experience to visit Emerson's. My main gripe, which may stop me from returning, is the way the staff attacks you when you enter the humidor. Every time I enter the humidor a staff member almost sprints in. Makes me very uncomfortable since I am not a thief and would like to wander around while I shop. Emerson's is THE place in Hampton Roads for cigars. Don't let the small store front fool you, this is a good sized store, with a nice little lounge in back for hanging out, reading or catching a game and they will sometimes have a fresh pot of coffee going. The walk in humidor is very well stocked and organized. They have all the paraphernalia any cigar smoker could need, if they don't have the exact thing you need/want, they will call another location to check for you. They also have a good selection of pipes and a very good selection of pipe tobacco and some import cigarettes. The staff is always fantastic, if you are a noob or old pro, they are helpful and willing to offer suggestions without being pushy or overbearing. They also have tasting events and meet and greets with some of the big names in the cigar world that are a lot of fun. read more

Emerson's is the only cigar store in Hampton Roads with consistent, knowledgeable and attentive personal service. Stopped in today for a 60 ring Padron cigar to enjoy on the beach. I mentioned to Brady that my lighter was not holding a flame. He examined it and quickly determined it was suffering from excess air. Brady released the air with a special tool and then, using a jewelers screwdriver, he removed the cap on the bottom of the lighter and perfectly adjusted the flame. Finally, Brady completely filled the lighter with butane. It now works like new. No charge. Try getting that done online! Emerson's forever. read more

I have enjoyed going to numerous cigar tasting events and purchasing cigars at Emerson's for years. I have always gotten good advice on purchasing different types of cigars and their cigars are generally good to smoke right out of their humidor. Unfortunately, my opinion changed drastically after I purchased a box of 12 Davidoff Yamasa cigars from Emerson's at the Cavalier whiskey tasting event in November. I smoked the first cigar at the event and it was a little harsh and tended to tunnel. I have had similar issues with cigars out of the box before because they generally aren't seasoned well. So I took them home and tried seasoning them for a couple of months in my Diamond Crown humidor. Unfortunately, there was no improvement. The remaining cigars were unopened in their plastic wrapper and in perfect condition, so I took the them back to Emerson's at VB Town Center to see if there was any way I could get a refund or exchange them. The salesman at the counter bluntly told me there was nothing he could do since they have a 2-day return policy. This policy makes it virtually impossible to return a box of cigars or any cigar given as a gift. I refuse to do business with any company that is unwilling to stand behind their product, so I no longer plan to attend events or buy cigars from Emerson's. read more

I was in the Chesapeake location today, and I was looking for some pipe tobacco. Upon entering the store the two employees behind the counter gave my wife and I a seemingly judgmental look. From the look I received, I guess they were not impressed with my laid back weekend dress. So of course I greeted them with a polite, "Hey, how ya doing". I then asked them if they had any pipe tobacco. One of the guys pointed me towards their selection of various tobaccos. I was impressed by how many they had! Now this is why I am writing a review for the Virginia Beach location. As I looked through pipe tobacco, smelling the ones that caught my attention, an older gentleman enjoying a cigar came by and asked me what I was looking for in a tobacco. He recommended a few and shared a wealth of knowledge about the flavoring and what made them each different. Turns out he was the manager of the Virginia Beach location. I can't remember what his name was, but i really appreciated him sharing all that information and technique with me. After returning home, I packed my pipe with a Proper English tobacco, and had a very enjoyable smoke, that was full of flavor, and lasted quite some time. I came into the store and an older gentleman greeted me, " hi there do you need help picking a cigar." My reply was "no." Not thinking that their set up was different then any other Emerson's. So I'm looking around trying to find the pattern. A young man walks in starts stocking the shelf. I think he is watching me. Let me walk around a bit. Yep he is watching me like a hawk, and I don't understand why. After I walked around a little to watch him stock in odd positions to keep his eyes on me. Sooner or later he asked me another question about needing help I ask him, "what is the pattern?" He goes, "non of our stores have a specific order." Which is wrong there are many Emerson that do in fact this is how I expanded cigar flavors structures and sizes. Sections from Connecticut to maduro or Top self cigars on the top self. After having this convers he leaves never finishing the stocking. Everyone is more relaxed and friendly now. Hmmm so you see a guy you have never seen before and automatically see him as a thief. I do think that this is a part of Emerson's way of doing things if you are so fearful of losing stoggies get cameras. I have been puffing on and off for 15 years when I say I'm good I mean I'm good. Stop watching me like some street punk I spend over $300 a month on stoggies. If your are of urban background and looking go somewhere else. read more
