We've had both of our cats visit Emerald recently for exams. One needed follow-up dental work and cleaning, as well as attention for a long-standing condition. Dr. Cassens and her team of vet techs (and high school interns) have been wonderful. Their approach to care gives a big nod to maintaining the relationship between you and your pet. It's obvious that those in this office care deeply for their patients. My daughter brings her cats here as well, and is very happy with the quality of care and level of compassion they show for both pets and their owners. After every visit we've received an email documenting what was discussed, and a separate one with the charges. We've never had to wait long to get in, and have never been in a situation where dogs were in the same area as cats. The facility is large, with a separate building for surgeries. The grounds include plenty of parking and a mix of wildflowers and whimsical sculptures of animals. Your pets deserve the kind of care they'll get at Emerald. read more

I've never been so disrespected by a vet, hanging up the phone on me, when I called to let her know my puppy wasn't doing well, after the spay surgery she received from her that morning! I advised her about my puppy moaning for hours, only to wake up "screaming" and "yelping" at the top of her lungs. "Oh, that's normal for her to moan", said Dr Cassens. But not before 3-4 attempts to reach her personally, to no avail. Dr Cassens, as she advised me, "doesn't have time to take calls from clients anymore". She then proceeded to insult me by telling me that she can't have me making her staff uncomfortable with my complaints, when I've NEVER complained until 2 days ago. After a discussion about the ridiculous pricing of the spay they originally quoted me 2 days ago ($500-700), I take my 8 lb mini schnauzer puppy in, and they had increased the quote to ($600-800). Of course I said something. Dr Cassens even admitted that she was a vet charging on the HIGH END. Needless to say, I made a TERRIBLE MISTAKE going here. What's amazing, is that Dr Cassens readily admitted that that she has changed in many ways over the last several years. She admits that her prices have gone way up, that she's paying her employees salary double what most other vets pay. And she admitted that she has LOST many of her clients because of this. Everyone here is so kind, knowledgeable, and just likable/personable in general! This is my first time being a pet parent, and had a million questions and Dr. Cassens was very patient with me, and took my concerns seriously. She takes all the time needed to listen and there is no rushing whatsoever. While it is my first time being a pet parent, I'm usually the one that takes my parent's dogs to THEIR vet and it is the opposite experience of Emerald Vet. We often have to wait a half hour, just to see a condescending provider that is rushing the appointment. Additionally, my pup is the type to dig his paws in once we get to a vet or groomer and has to be carried inside, but this was not the case here. He was happy and fairly calm the entire time we were there. He didn't enjoy being on the examination table, but there was no scrambling or trying to get off. They are a bit pricier, but are transparent with their pricing and there is no surprise when paying because when I ask what each thing will cost, I get a straight answer. I just now picked up a prescription and am sitting in the parking lot writing this review lol I am so glad we found Emerald Vet, and I can't recommend it enough!! If I could give Dr. Cassens and staff 10 stars I would gladly do so! She is the best cat vet I've ever had! She knows and understands cats better than any vet I've had. She and her team are also wonderful people, too. If you need a vet who understands cats, she's your woman! I've had 7 cats over my life, 2 of the last three were "special needs " ones. They were rescued at about 6-8 months old, had no socialization with humans, etc. The lady who ran the shelter asked me if I could take them on and I did. It took a year or so but they eventually became loveable pets...to me. Everyone else they were frightened of and would fight if they got near. They were absolutely terrified of cat carriers, boxes, bags or anything that would confine them. I had one vet tell me he didn't want to see them again after one of them clawed him so badly he had to get stitches. Dr. Cassens and her brave crew would come to my house and give them their shots and examine them. Their patience and care with those two was/is exceptional and far above what ANY vet would do! I had to put one of them down last year and the care and compassion for her was wonderful! I asked her for advice on what to look for in a new kitty considering the nature of the one that was left and it was spot on! What could improve? For one, not taking advantage of people to make money. Also, better communication and informing the owners before doing certain procedures. I am not a vet but a medical professional with understanding of pathophysiology. Brought my dog in with the suspicion of him having an abscess that was caused from an incest bite of some sort. I seen a point of entry. Tell this to the provider, she barely looks at it and says it is dental related. I trust her. She says he needs surgery. Gave me antibiotics and pain meds. We schedule the appt. The cost is between 885-1200. They call me to tell me they were finished with Nabisco and COULD NOT FIND THE ABSCESS IN HIS MOUTH! BUT REMOVED A COUPLE OF HIS BOTTOM FRONT TEETH! They did not call and say hey this is what we found instead would you like to move forward? Nothing. But tells me it's good news and it saved me money. I get there the cost was 800 and some change! I will no longer bring my animals to this place. read more

We were referred to Emerald when we got our albino ball python. Have since moved the whole critter family over, and couldn't be more pleased. The staff are friendly, timely, professional, and compassionate. They are also great about positive reinforcement, which is a major win. Our pups were given all the treats and squeeze cheese they could handle while getting their yearly vaccines. It was so sweet and really made me feel like they loved our dogs like their own. This is the best Vet around!! Dr Cassen is a person who isn't in this business for the money she is in it to help our pets. She has a way with pets that is so heartwarming to see. I've known her for at least 10 years and have followed her. She is now in Round Rock and I live in Killeen. I drove from Killeen to Round Rock just so much fur baby could see her. I could not be more frustrated and disappointed. I want to start by saying Taylor and the team of tech's are AMAZING! Great heart, and wonderful at what they do. The one star is based on the last 7 days with my puppy. We visited for the first time last Tuesday, and found out our puppy had Giardia. Obviously common to a degree, so we got medicine, as well as soft food, and some probiotic. The appointment was pleasant to a degree, but be prepared. If you feed grain free, half of your appointment will be about grain food, and virtue being crammed down your throat. Lets fast forward to seeing minimal improvement, and still dealing with blood in his stool etc. 6 days later we are back, and she once again asked about what food, gave me the same soft food that didn't work, and a powder to thicken things up. They also tested his stool and said no parasites, after saying she was 100% sure he would test positive. Also, no confronting a lack of improvement, and blood still being existent. We are now almost $700 in over 6 days. I finally decided to call Dogwood vet that is right down the street while I was walking out of Emerald, and set an appointment. WAHLA......He tested positive within 12 hours of being told he had no parasites here, was told the Purina GI medicine was wasteful, food is an owners preference and she simply gave me educational dialogue, and some new medicine. I am typing this within 15 hours of being at Dogwood and things are thickening, there has been no blood, and I spent $100 total. There is a difference between discourse, and heavy handing your opinion. Also, I as a patient am looking for results and improvement in my pup, and making sure not only quality of life improves, but results are seen as well. I would highly suggest looking elsewhere, and pursuing second opinions. The process is compounded with transactions and fees, and ultimately I went elsewhere and got better results. I have no doubt that people have great experiences here, and they are kind, but with what I have been through, and seeing the rapid improvement of my dog after going elsewhere and spending a significant amount less for said solution without being confronted with opinion and virtue, I needed to let folks know that I see better value elsewhere. read more

Marley, my Springer Spaniel, and I have now been seeing Dr Cassens for close to 4 years. (He was 6 and is now 10.) The doctor has been every bit as good as that first visit. She is the only vet that Marley looks forward to seeing. She and her staff love on your animal and take the time to listen to you. She gives you the time you need and then some. Dr Cassens has very recently relocated and is now able to offer a wide range of care. She is very knowledgable, a credit to her training. Pricing issues both times I went. If you go, make sure you know what you're supposed to pay, and make sure they charge you correctly. I'd probably give the doctor 5 stars. She seems like she's teaching her students well too and everyone who dealt with my pets felt very nice and caring. However, there is clearly a disconnect between her and the accounting. First time I went, I was quoted a price on the phone, but then they charged another $10-15ish when I was there. I called to inquire, and they removed the extra amount. When I was there the first time, I asked the doctor how much it costs to clip a birds wings, and she told me she thought it was $25. I made the appointment. After the appointment, I was SHOCKED when they charged me $50!!!! I was so mad that I never could talk to them about it. It seems like this is something they're going to do all the time.... 2 out of 2 fails. I did question the girl charging my card in the parking lot, and she basically said "oh well" and walked back inside. To top that off, the doctor trimmed too little of the feathers, and my bird still ended up getting loose and flying around the house later that day. Absolutely no change at all whatsoever. She'd told me that if it was too little, I could come back in for more, but I didnt want to have to traumatize my bird again so quickly, and I didnt even want to have to deal with the office again. I already wouldn't have done it for $50, but especially not with it fixing absolutely nothing or taking 2 visits for my poor baby and extra calls! Total waste. I did like my in-person experiences there and my conversations with the doctor and students, but I'm hesitant to go again or to recommend going. She's a great doctor, but just watch what they say you'll pay versus what they try to charge you. read more

I took my cat in for an emergency visit because he was throwing up. They immediately squeezed me in for an appointment. When we got there, the staff was nothing but the most kind and professional. They got to us quickly and efficiently, and were able to diagnose my little baby. I couldn't be more grateful for their kindness and immense knowledge. This hospital has a very small and intimate feel to it, and I was able to ask more questions and really discuss everything with the doctor. Very nice people! Curbside service was very efficient. Thay took care if my 14 year old Yorkie who had a terrible skin rash due to allergies. She also had a flea problem even though she's an indoor dog. She was so miserable. She was much better in just 3 days. She's no longer biting at herself and everyone funally sleeps through the night now! Thanks for takiing care of our senior yorkie! I highly recommend Enerald Veterinary Service. Dr. Cassens was fantastic with my 17 year old cat, Velcro. She loved on him and was great with reaching out to my small children to show them what she was doing to our kitty. You need to give this vet a try before you settle on just the closest place. She actually puts her patients first - meaning saying what is the best for each animal in her opinion and just expects you to do your best to meet her ideas of what the best care would be for your animal. My cats are my kids so it's nice to go to a vet who takes their safety seriously and tries to look at ways to improve their health rather than just managing their sicknesses once they occur. I reached her from a referral and glad I did. Also glad that I found her before she gets so busy that I can't get in to see her in particular.
