Visited the Embassy Theater for the first time today- new to the area- and had the best experience. They are extremely welcoming, I felt right at home, and loved the overall vibes of the theater. Glad to see this independent cinema re-opened. I spoke with the owner Tim who explained it is no longer part of the Landmark chain. Only 2 of the 6 screens are operational at the moment but I was delighted to find Maestro still showing--the only showing in the greater Boston area. The lobby is redesigned with a festive party look. Tim was the only employee I saw at 10am on a Saturday but he greeted everyone pleasantly and answered questions, even escorted us to our theater! I'm always a fan of supporting the smaller chain or independent theater. Having been to Landmark locations in other cities, they usually are well kept, but this theater needs a little work. The concession stand staff was wonderful and their prices are reasonable in my opinion. But their seats are just too uncomfortable. I don't NEED reclining leather couches, but I do need something that doesn't cause me to readjust my position every 10 minutes which distracts you from the movie. read more

How on earth does this place have a SOLID 4 star rating?! This is a 2 star at best, and let's be honest it's really 1.5, but I'm rounding up. They aren't even really a local business, since they have chains all over the US. Notice how most of the glowing reviews are super old, perhaps from its heyday. Either that or the folks praise the indie / foreign film niche. Nowadays many people want to plan their movie experience in advance and reserve their seat, especially when the price for a couple of tickets runs about $25... on par with the other theaters. Plus even their Tuesday specials at $6 are nothing to brag about. AMC has $5 and AppleCinema $4.75 for in person purchase or +$1 reserve in advance. There are still people out there who hate the reclining chairs and picking their seats in advance. Let's review, similar or higher pricing, for conjested seating in a tiny theater with dated AV setup. (The one in Kendall Square is slightly bigger.) As for the "parking" garage, I drove by the poorly labeled entranceways about 5 times. Each time I ended up either in tenant parking, which was closer in proximity to the theater or at the Charles River Museum. In fact, the theater does NOT have their own dedicated parking lot, rather it is a "public" lot called Embassy Public Parking Garage managed by the City of Waltham. So get your quarters ready! Despite the inconvenience, I need to clarify that this did NOT factor into my end rating of the theater itself. (One passionate patron personally messaged me on here to set the records straight.) I checked their website and here's a verbatim copy of their info "Parking is conveniently located behind the theatre when entering at Pine and Cooper Streets, just east of Moody Street. Operated by the city of Waltham, the lot is free after 6 PM daily and all day Sunday and City Holidays." I took a photo of the sign for you along with the Auto Shop for reference. In the end after multiple unsuccessful attempts circling around to find this elusive brick beacon, I resigned to street parking on a Monday when a patron of one of the many restaurant offerings vacated. Even though I wasted about 15 minutes trying to park, thankfully they were still showing previews for movies that had already released with on their laughable 6 screens or movies I had no interest in watching. The movie experience itself was enjoyable, despite the duress I endured arriving at this destination, which again did NOT factor into my end rating. They don't even have a variety of food options. Mainly just popcorn and your typical movie snacks. This Landmark Cinema has its faded old-world charms that some people may find enjoyable. I can't say I want to stray from my AMC Premier Stubs membership unless I messed up and forgot to reserve purchasing... The only benefit I can see is if you're already in the area trying one of the restaurants, and you want to pop in for a movie afterwards. read more

Five star customer service!! I used go here a lot when it was a Landmark Theater, and I was elated when I heard it had reopened under new owners. The employees are top notch, and you can tell they really care. I saw the Holdovers in December, and enjoyed the experience immensely. Took my grandson to see Wonka last week and had a terrific time. Tim (employee) was very courteous in welcoming us and explained it was a special viewing with free popcorn and refills also that the seats were bean bags along with other seats as well. Having gone to college in Waltham, I knew the Embassy Cinema well. However, it's been years since I've gone here and didn't remember too much about it. I went Tuesday night with a friend and we were both quite impressed! For starters: Tuesdays are discount days!! She bought our tickets online for $6 each and we saw a new release (not an indie). It's cheaper to buy them in-person, rather than online. We shared a large popcorn, which I think was reasonably priced (she paid) but it was AMAZING. The best movie popcorn I think I've ever had! I was actually skeptical when I first tasted it, but after a few bites? Wow! My friend doesn't eat much popcorn and she kept taking handfuls!! Oh! And I absolutely love that the popcorn bags are made from recycled paper. Brilliant! The theaters themselves are fine - nothing fancy, but they're clean and are well kept. We found parking on the street, which was good, as I couldn't remember how to get into the lot behind the studio. We will definitely be back on a Tuesday! read more

Small cinema. I've been here a number of times. Tuesdays are $6 a movie. I think they have like 6 showings. Not much on the menu for food. I think there's popcorn, hot dogs and nachos. Pretzels and hot dogs are for Friday and Saturday only. Also, just saw that they have 3D showings now? Not sure if it was there before but i just noticed it today. Nice little local cinema for those spontaneous night when you just feel like walking to see a movie. The space inside is also smaller comparing to AMC but that's one of the things that makes this place warm and cozy. There're plenty of parking spots in this area of Waltham. I think the cinema also has parking. Be careful not to park on the street during the snow though... We got our car towed one movie night. No one knew it would snow while we were watching movie... The interior inside is a little old and if I remember correctly, the light in the hallway was quite dim, which didn't help when we just watched a serious movie. Would probably come back. read more

I don't understand the complaints about the Embassy cinema. It is in perfectly fine condition. I am happy with the seats, the screens, the sound, etc... They have gone from independent and foreign to mostly mainstream, but: it is a good place to watch movies. I HATE the reclining seats that most theaters have these days (and the absurdity of reserved seating) and am so glad that this place has neither. read more

Local theater in Waltham. It is pretty small but it is cozy, nice and clean. The screen isn't the biggest and the seats aren't the greatest, but I don't complain it gets the job done. I only come for $6 all day Tuesdays, so really can't complain about the price. It does get crowded and tickets could get sold out quick since it is a smaller theater. Pros: 1. Nice mix of Indy/Foreign and Mainstream movies 2. Eclectic concession choices 3. Usually not overly crowded or sold out 4. Parking is typically available in garage behind theater Cons: 1. Sound systems in all theaters are very low quality, barely any surround and no bass. Not a problem with Indy/Foreign films---but very problematic for big budget epics. 2. Noticeable visual discrepancies in 3D projection 3. Seats are only marginally comfortable. So why only two stars? The Embassy is trying too hard to split the difference between an art house and a mainstream theater. Bottom line---if they want to maximize revenue by having big budget movies, then the experience should match. Substantial upgrades in surround sound and seating should be undertaken soon. read more

Full disclosure, this review is based largely on the mistake I made of seeing a big budget action movie, rather than the indie/plot-driven films that most people come to Embassy for. Pros: ticket and concession prices are very reasonable. $11 for a 8pm show on a Saturday...can't beat that. Small popcorn and large water for another $10. Way under what the big mega-theaters charge. Great proximity to the Waltham neighborhood - specifically the bars and restaurants on Moody Street - which is far more preferable to hiking out to the suburbs or into downtown Boston or Cambridge. Cons: We saw "Everest" on a screen that was only slightly bigger than my personal TV. In a theater that was only slightly bigger than my living room. Not the best match for a movie that almost definitely would have been spectacular in IMAX or 3D. Again, I can't blame Embassy for this -- I should have thought it through a little more! I have no doubt that this place is a great for a picture that doesn't require a giant screen and booming sound effects. And the next time I'm in the mood for something like that, I'll certainly come back and give Embassy a shot. This place runs both independent art house films and major first run blockbusters however it is an art house theater all the way so don't expect the perks of a major cinema chain. Location sits in downtown Waltham off dreary Moody street and is on the center of a side street. One problem with the place, the parking is a nightmare. There are no signs to tell you to park in the rear half garage and you have to find your way down the street to then battle patrons for spots in a tight parking garage/lot. the lot is so small that you will have to squeeze by other cars to go around and if it is a Saturday night, be prepared to not get a spot at all. The theaters here are sort of small, very tight and like any independent theater, uncomfortable non reclining seats and small screens. The lobby of the place is also tight and the movies sell out frequently here. Place looks like it needs an upgrade however that may contribute to its charm. The snack bar is decent, fresh popcorn and prices are reasonable. If I was seeing a blockbuster first run movie though, I would stick to the main stream theaters for comfort and size. Prices are no different here, $11 a person so why not go elsewhere? Plus you won't have to battle for a parking space and better, you won't have to maneuver crowded Moody street in Waltham. read more

Jeez. I went there to see a movie last month (July 14) and if you are in the mood to waste your money feel free to stop in. Myself? I will never go there again. During the course of the film we sat through two fat women belching and coughing loudly throughout the film. It got to a point where we had to turn around and demand them to keep quiet. .ridiculous. oh well..it's Waltham. On top of everything else there was a couple that decided to bring their 3 year old with them and the let the child run around during the movie. The child would climb on the top of the seat in front of us and it got to a point where I had to tell the mother to get her child. ..unreal. oh well..Waltham. Next time I will forget about being lazy and just drive to Dedham or Natick to see a film. read more

I've always been a fan of the Embassy. Not a huge theater, but it offers some real variety -- art house flicks, indie movies, and documentaries will be showing alongside one or two big blockbusters. On a weekend evening it can be insanely hard to find a parking space in the Moody St. area, but if you get there early and have a coffee or window-shop a bit before your movie, you should be all set. The theater itself is busy, but rarely so insanely crowded that you and your friends can't sit together, which is nice. There's also a student discount, but only on weekdays (kinda lame, and there's this one lady who's totally anal about checking for ID). I also once puked in the bathrooms here, but that was due to a stomach virus not in any way related to the service provided by the cinema, so I won't dock them any points. read more

This historic establishment is a classic! A fantastic go-to for indie flicks as well as mainstream movies. They play indie music while you're waiting for your movie to come up. I wanted to see "Milk" on the big screen before investing in a rental and just missed it. Went to see "Watchmen" instead and it was a great experience. The screen seems small, but the acoustics are great and the small audience makes for big amusement (almost like a private showing). *Showtime prices are little high for me ($9.50...but I guess that's normal for this area). *Good snack bar prices and selection (too bad there isn't a "21+" bit). *Clean establishment. Worth the price - I hope it keeps to locals only :) Try to get there early; the small audience sizes makes me wonder if the later showtimes might sell out quickly. read more

this place is a great place to come on a date or a night out. It's cheap, cozy, comfortable, and is set up pretty good. They show a good selection of movies and have free parking in the back (but if you come at prime time on a weekend expect to drive around a few times to find a place for your car). The thing I love about this place, its the location. You can go see a movie and then go to one of the million restaurants a few blocks up or down the street and then you have had a fun night. It is a smaller theater with smaller screens, so if you are used to stadium seating then you may feel claustrophobic, but personally that isn't my thing anyway. read more

Sister of theatre in Kendall, Embassy is a place to catch independent movies and some that are not currently available in Cambridge. When I lived in Waltham, I used to bike here, rain or shine, and I'd go at such odd hours that I'd have the whole room to myself. Nothing pretentious or shiny, but straight forward movie theatre. What I expected: Dollar movie atmosphere for regular price. What I got: Clean but still outdated atmosphere for a little less than regular price Growing up in Ohio where you could buy movie tickets for tiered seating in a theater that offered all of the newly released movies for like $7.50 on a weekend night, I was not thrilled about spending $7.75 for a matinee at a worn down theater that plays six movies at a time. Sure, it's probably the only movie theater within a 5 mile radius. Yeah, I was impressed that it promoted some independent films. They do sell snacks; they do have restrooms (only on the second floor). The seats were kinda old but I didn't stick to the floor walking around. The movie played fine. I guess I'll continue to wait until it's out on video unless it rivals the hubbub of Harry Potter. read more

Gotta love this place. My go to local theater now that I live in Waltham. The parking is always ample, and the popcorn is great! Staff is always friendly and nice. Theater is clean. Warning for the elitist MONSTER screen fans. Not the place to go for that. You will feel like you've walked into a room where the screens are slightly bigger than the 60 inch you have at home. Meh, who cares? Screen is still big enough to enjoy and holy heck they are not cheap on the bass. It's ear drum popping! I liked this theater. There is a huge parking lot (which I did not know about so I have not been here even though I have lived in the area for awhile), good prices--their matinee on the weekend I think applies until 4:00 so the price was fair without having to go to a 11:00 am movie, and clean. I thought the seats were comfy and the screen was nice--it was better than some of the theaters are larger chains (you know the theaters that have yet to be updated). I will def add this to my list of options to see a movie. The bathrooms were upstairs---I guess I do not see that as a reason to dock stars especially since lengthwise, it is the same distant as some theaters where you have to walk down a long hallway. But if bathroom proximity is very important to you then do not come here. read more

I like this theatre a lot. It's got a real cozy feel to it, and the staff is very friendly. One time I was there the manager actually came into the theatre before the previews started and made a point to thank everyone for coming, and say how much they truly appreciated our business. Nice independent movie theater in downtown Waltham. I wish it also played more mainstream movies since the closet theater besides this one is in Burlington but alas it does not. It's pretty old and the screens aren't so big, the seats aren't very comfortable (butt fell asleep an hour in), but it's cheaper then other places (matinee is $6.50 and the regular is $9.00). I went to a showing at 4:50PM on a Friday and there were only like 4 other people there. Parking is free after 6PM otherwise you have to pay a small fee (25 cents per hour I think). It was really nice. Probably only worth coming here if you are in the area, otherwise the Kendall Square place is comparable and on the T too. read more

This is a cute, little theater which serves its purpose: to screen movies. It is a little bit of a hybrid because it shows big name movies and also smaller independent films. The employees are very accommodating, although like most movie theater employees they seemed a little bored. Oh well. I must be a little spoiled because I can never get comfortable in a theater without the big headrest stadium seats. What can I say I like to rest my head! The seats here are unfortunately not my preference, but they are fine for what they are. Just a nice little, conveniently located (if you live in Waltham) theater. I have been to this theater over a dozen times since moving to Waltham last year. It used to be my favorite cinema as it was run like an independent theater while showing AMC movies. It saddens me to say that my experiences over the last months have been worse and worse. Last night was the straw that broke the camel's back. I went to see a cheesy horror movie to wrap up a wonderful birthday with my girlfriend. Instead of a silly ghost film I was treated to groups of people speaking loudly and answering their cell phones throughout the movie, including a large gaggle of teenagers unable to be quiet until I stood and yelled at them. Having one of the five people staffing the over-priced concession stand act as an usher to do theater checks may be a good idea. Besides the issue of the audience, the theater has lately been slacking in the cleanliness department. The theaters I have been in ranged from spotless to dangerous. Before paying $26.00 to hear teenagers make wiener jokes, I slipped on some liquid while trying to get to my seat. I could barely see the puddle thanks to the slanted black floor and low lighting, even though the movie wouldn't start for 20 minutes. The sound of the film was at a reasonable volume but the picture looked a little washed out. The blackness looked a little more grey than anything else. When I left the theater after the movie ended I walked up to the ticket desk to ask to speak to a manger. I raised these complaints and received a blank stare from the attendant who rolled his eyes and called the manager. The manager came down from the second level and explained that I should have gotten up during the movie, walked over to the ticket station and made a complaint. The manager then would come down and remove the teenagers who I was most concerned about. That would have been great if I wasn't waiting ten minutes for the manager to come downstairs to speak to me. I would have been more annoyed to leave my girlfriend with somewhat hostile teenagers in a theater alone while I went to have them removed, waiting who knows how long for a manager to arrive. The cherry on top of this story was when the ticket taker mentioned that he sold tickets to the teenagers much earlier in the day and had seen them theater hoping. Great to see the initiative at this theater! TL;DR Drive somewhere else to see a movie that bothers to actually have staff available. You can enjoy the same experience by inviting a group of street urchins into your home while watching a scratched up DVD. read more

I love Embassy Cinema. There's a special place in my heart for this place because it opened while I was in college. We went to one of the first screenings there, so I'm pretty sentimental about this place. I go back every now and again to catch a more independent film or to support the theatre. It's located conveniently on Moody Street just past the bridge over the Charles River. Ample parking is available, but a little tricky to find -- turn onto Pine Street and then pass the theatre, as well as the residential lot, and you'll come to the turn where you can park. They do charge at certain points of the day, but it's free after 6 PM on Saturday and all day on Sundays/holidays. The theatres are smaller (but not too tiny, like other independent theatres) and the coming attractions/commercials are usually much better than your typical larger chain. Definitely check this place out and go here rather than the big guns. Combine it with dinner on Moody Street, or elsewhere in Waltham, and you've struck gold. read more

Cute local theater that used to be known only for its foreign & indie films is now on the up and up! In the last few years this theater has made a significant effort to move towards more mainstream movies. I know some people that this bothers a lot. I am not one of them. Personally, I like foreign & indie flicks and all, but I'm not going to go see them as frequently as I may see more popular titles. I'm also thrilled because it has allowed them to improve the condition of the building... it was getting a bit hairy there for a few years. What once was an afterthought on a lazy day has become a staple in the local nightlife - and for those of us who live in the Moody/Main area it has brought great things. Downside: They don't have a separate area or kiosk for redeeming online tickets purchased through them (versus a third party). You can only redeem them at the ticket booth or concession stand - so don't think that just because you bought advanced tickets you won't be standing in line. You will. Other downside: only bathrooms they have are upstairs. 1) handicap accessible, not so much. 2) way to make me miss ten minutes out of a movie just because I drank too much soda. Take some of the mainstream moola and invest in downstairs bathrooms! read more

Although, this place has a lot of independent films, occasionally they will surprise you with a film that is in theaters everywhere. We went to see Sicko this time around, and I still like this place. I just wish that some time soon, they will start to play more hollywood movies. Since they are still charging $9/ticket. Not to say we shouldn't support to the independent film makers. They need to make money too. This place is clean and friendly. The concession stand is decently priced and with good portions. My medium drink is the size of an extra large at Showcase. Their seats are so comfortable. And parking is easy, right behind the theater. Great - I needed a place for my independent movie fix! Embassy Cinema delivered today! After being one of only 10 people in the entire building (and the only one at the movie I was seeing), I felt perfectly happy to laugh out loud, jabber on my cell phone, crunch away on my buttered popcorn, and change seats during the flick. Bathrooms are nice and tidy, and the food counter looks remarkably clean. I think I'll make this a weeknight getaway from Mommy Land! Bring on the artsy films with awesome sex scenes, angsty thin cute man actors, and bizarre ending that leave you going, "Whaaaaaa ...?" read more

This cinema is a treasure. I saw twilight on opening weekend and there were 10 people in the theatre! 10 people! There was no one calling bella a whore because she kisses Jacob and Edward or screaming when Jacob came on the scream.... oh it was bliss. The popcorn was fresh and a small is huge! The medium drink is easily a large anywhere else. There are lots of ice cream choices and candy choices. The seating is a little uncomfortable but I mean if the movie is good (which twilight wasn't) then you don't even notice it. To put it mildly its great! Indie films and large films and a great staff and atmosphere. I will worn you that if you are in a wheelchair or can't go upstairs you won't be able to use the bathroom because its upstairs. read more

Of all the movie theaters around this is one of my favorites for a couple of reasons. It is not nearly as mobbed as the theaters in Boston, it shows a wide assortment of movies (blockbusters and indie flicks) and has the best popcorn around. Parking is easy. You need to look for the public lot behind the theater. The lot on the side is NOT theirs and they tow. I saw someone here it is not well posted. Well there are signs in the lots, a sign on the front door of the theater and where you buy tickets. So I think they do a good job telling you about it. The screens are smaller then those in the city but they are pretty good. Its not huge, not state of the art but it is homey and local and I love it! read more
