Best link between North and South until Australia realizes the advantage of spending on a subway system (sorry, personal desire to travel subterranean I guess). Good bus and they sometime place some great tunes!

OK, so it feel pretty strange reviewing a bus, but the 246 Bus service (provided by Ventura Buses)…read moreis one of the two great public transport routes in Melbourne city. The 246 runs from Clifton Hill to Elsternwick down the notoriously shit arterials of Hoddle Street and Punt Road. Effectively this links the likes of Elsternwick Park (where the annual Community Cup footy game between the Espy Rockdogs and the RRR & PBS Megahertz has been played for the past few years) and Cliffy Hill; but more importantly, the route cuts through Richmond along the way, therefore eliminating the dogleg into the city for those travelling north to south or vice versa. Now you may be thinking 'so what?' 'So what' is that more often than not, the bus will actually charge on past all traffic stranded on the Hoddle/Punt wasteland and get you to your destination quicker and with less stress than driving. Also, if you've a mind for a few beers say, at the Corner Hotel for example, you can leave the car behind and get yourself a skin full. Plus, bloody nobody uses this service, so you always get a seat. And, it's pretty regular (like every 10 minutes during peak times and 20 minutes for the most part after that). It's gold.

This transport network provides a great public transport system in Victoria, connecting Melbourne…read morewith regional victorian towns. The bus services are economical and provide a cheap and reliable service to many country towns, and even country towns in New South Wales which are situated no longer than an hour away from the New South Wales and Victoria borders. Bookings need to be made in advance, yet it is so easy to do. Back to economical. I travelled to Deniliquin during the Easter break earlier this year; of which took 4 hours from Melbourne on the V/Line coach, and all in all the total investment was only $22.40 return. The service was packed going up there; however there was an abundance of seats available coming back home to Melbourne. The V/Line train service is also fantastic, and the only way to travel is via first class. On some V/Line train services (not all) you have a choice of travelling via first class or economy. You would be foolish if you did not travel on the train via first class. For only an extra $6 per leg from Melbourne to Bendigo (2-hour journey) you have your own private carriage with less seats and no middle seats; extra legroom; seats that recline and have a meal tray. It all makes a lot of sense as economy gets crowded, where there are an abundance of first class seats available. The service is faultless, and the staff (including the train conductors) are friendly, especially on the trip from Melbourne to Bendigo and back.

While not a nervous passenger I have had bus trips that left me wondering if we would make it in one piece! Andrew was professional and his driving skills allowed me to settle back and enjoy the journey. Well done and thank you

Doncaster Park and Ride is pretty damn awesome and it makes life easier for hundreds of people…read moreevery single day. It is basically a massive 400-car car park located next to a bus bay. It can be accessed via Doncaster Road and is just before (or after) the entrance to Eastlink freeway. The bus services that run here are: Route 207 - City - Donvale via Doncaster Road Route 280 - Manningham Loop via Tunstall Square SC, Shoppingtown Route 282 - Manningham Mover via Templestowe Village SC, Shoppingtown Route 284 - Doncaster Shoppingtown - Box Hill via Union Road Route 285 - Doncaster Shoppingtown - Camberwell via North Balwyn Route 309 - City - Donvale via Reynolds Road (Freeway Exp) Route 313 - City (Russell Street) - Doncaster Park + Ride via Eastern Freeway and Kilby Road Route 907 - City - Mitcham via Doncaster Road (SMARTBUS Service) Route 908 - City - The Pines via King Street (SMARTBUS Service) In the mornings this place is awesome because buses run almost every five minutes during peak hours. Smart buses are in operation here and screens at the bus stop display exactly how many minutes until the bus will arrive and depart. There is NO myki machine here so you will want to top up your card before you turn up. There are ticket machines though. If it is raining there is plenty of shelter to keep you dry. Perhaps the only bad thing about this place is that during the week the car park is often full by 7.30am and leaving at the end of the day can be painful when all the city workers arrive back at their cars at the same time. Otherwise though it is a super awesome idea and I am a big fan!

Having lived in Manningham the majority of my life, I hate explaining that there is no train stops near my house and a 15 minute drive to the station is around 30 minutes via bus. If you drive to Park and Ride for your morning commute to the city you can expect a 20 minute ride to Spring Street which is amazing for peak hour!
