Stopped back in town grab a burger, I ordered a half pound burger with sweet potato fries. I'm quite sure they gave me a 1/3 lb burger and we were charged for the 1/2lb. That was a bummer since I wasn't eating the bun, which was huge compared to the burger. My boyfriend ordered an 8oz burger and his was muxh larger. I was so hungry and it was busier than I've ever seen it before, so I wasn't able to get the server to come over in time. The server should have noticed that the burger was small, in the kitchen. I can't even see why they would use a large bun on a smaller patty. Anyway, I was disappointed and should have noticed when she set it down, but it is also very dark inside. Man! I loved this place! Clearly a local spot for good food and service but welcome to first timers too. I took a video of the inside to share with my husband (Louisville native) of how much it reminded me of "Old Louisville". Dark and pubby yet friendly and warm. My family decided to try a bunch of different fish and chips places during Lent this year - a different one every Friday. Elmhurst's landed right near the top of all the places we tried. Besides having tasty fish and chips, the portion size was plentiful, the price was very reasonable compared to others, and they came with an option of multiple types of sides, including sweet potato fries and waffle fries, not just the traditional French fries or potato wedges. The fish was a bit on the greasy side, but what do you expect from fish and chips? I would gladly order the fish and chips here again. read more

Everything I said in my original review is still true. But I just wanted to add that they overcooked one of my friends burgers and my other friend got sick off the pizza. And this is a couple days later. I'm updating again. So my friend got sick twice off the pizza, my other friends burger was charcoal. And then since I didn't tip crappy service, they took the liberty of adding their own tip on my credit card, which I'm disputing of course. I hadn't been here in at least 10 years. Someone posted on a local Facebook page how awesome the food is (in particular the pizza) and wanting to support local businesses, we ordered some takeout. We ordered a large pizza - it's a good size, 14 slices. The picture on their website and the comments on FB had me setting my expectations high. The pizza was ok. The toppings were a little light, there was a ton of cheese, and the crust is fairly thin with minimal sauce. Most of the sauce was near the edge, not spread throughout. It was an ok bar style pizza. We also had an antipasto salad which was loaded up with all fresh ingredients. The grilled shrimp was just as fabulous as I remember it being in the 90s when we would pop in for lunch. Next time we'll try the burgers and the reuben. Also, curbside pickup was easy-peasy, you can park in front or in the back. Sorry, we were so hungry, I forgot to take pics! read more

This is a great little neighborhood bar and restaurant. It's dark and old-school. There's no cell phone signal or Wi-Fi, so you're forced to actually have conversations with your companions. I ordered a burger on my first visit. No lie: this was one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly medium-rare and was stacked with thick bacon. It was also pretty big, so I got to take half home to enjoy the next day. They have shoe string fries (insert heart-eyes here). My second visit was just for drinks with friends but we ended up ordering saganaki and onion rings. Both were perfect. I'm going to be dreaming of their big crusty onion rings until I get to have them again! They've got a decent tap list, with a mix of yellow domestics and a few craft beers (Saugatuk and Great Lakes, among others). Their bar is fully stocked with liquor, too. A fat pour of Jim Beam was $5.25. Most beers are $4-$5. Overall, the Elmhurst is a cool place to have a drink with friends or to get dinner. I love its dark, vintage facade and friendly servers. What a hidden gem. Full of ambience and personality. The wait staff were spot on attending to our every request and frequent stops to see if anything else was needed. The food was surprisingly fresh and the helpings were generous. I wish I could say more but this is only the first time we have dined here. It is definitely on my list to come again. My wife and I share the fish and chips and it was absolutely wonderful. I happen to find this place because it was listed as having a great calzone. It is impossible to get a picture that isn't tinted with the plethora of red lighting in this place. It is, perhaps, the reason it took me so long to give Elmhurst a try. My husband finally just insisted that he didn't care about pictures, he wanted to try it. So he got his way, and I wished I hadn't been so judgmental for so long because this place is perfect. It's old, it's red, it smells like garlic and drawn butter, and everything I have eaten has been tasty as all get out. We have been a handful of times now and it's safe to say, the kitchen knows what it's doing. You order your burger medium, it comes out a little pink in the middle and bursting with juice and flavor. The fries are hand cut and crispy. Also, I consider myself a ranch connoisseur and they have the BEST ranch dressing... They have a little bit of every good thing on their menu and yes, they have serious seafood, which totally explains the garlicy buttery aroma that meets you at the door. To top off the great food and selection of menu items, the staff is nice and attentive and the atmosphere is laid back. Important to note, you seat yourself for the most part. It's often busy, especially on weekends or during sporting events. Go on a Thursday for crab legs. read more

I can not stop thinking about the King Crab sandwich. Last week I ventured over to the Elmhurst thinking I was going to Millers (yes, all Dearborn bars look the same in my head). I was totally in the mood for a burger, then I opened the door and thought d@mn it. We bellied up to the bar anyway. I'm not sure how I've not ordered the King Crab sandwich before. As soon as I read the description on the menu, my eyes could not go any further. SOLD. Swiss cheese melted on a HUGE stack of King Crab served open face. YUM. It was all I could have ever wanted and more. The more was the side of curly fries (always a good call). Service at the bar is always good. Beers are always cheap and cold. See you soon Elmhurst. The hubs and I went on a whim to the Elmhurst Tap Room when we were starving and I didn't feel like making anything. To us, being in the mood to eat greasy bar food is like being in the mood to breathe, and we get tired of the same old places. When I walked into the ETR I felt like I had just walked back in time. It's very dark, very red, and very nostalgic. There were two elderly gentlemen sitting at a booth who both greeted us, and a very nice bartender. Surprisingly, the bar was stocked with a nice selection of both domestic and imports, as well as a big variety of both average and top shelf liquors. Even more surprisingly, they have a huge menu! With everything from salads to soups to sandwiches, pizza and even steak. It being lunch, I ordered fish and chips and hubs ordered the monte cristo dip. Everything was tasty! The batter was nice and crispy, and the fish was very fresh. Hubs' used the word 'delectable' when describing his ham and cheese/french toast combo. While we were there, several other patrons walked in - all over the age of 75 and started all talking with the owner and bartender. We felt like we were in a big family reunion listening to uncle Earl talking about his days at the track back in the day. And it felt cool. If you are into the new, modern, trendy spots, avoid this location like the plague. But if you're comfortable in a place that looks like it could be on the set of LA Confidential, with good reasonably priced food, give this a try. read more

I used to see this place all the time when my dad lived in the area. I never went in till the other night because it was open. Now I wish I had come in sooner. A little dark and 70's 'english pub' kitchy, but in a good way. This place is small! We went in the back way (they have parking in the back, and on the street) and the staff was very friendly and told us right away to have a seat anywhere. I can't speak for the drinks, as I was driving and didn't have any mixed drinks. The menu was interesting, and we just got the pizza. Man the pizza is good. And they are not bothered by special orders (in our case, a half and half). I will be going back. 6/17 - I have been back a few time and need to bump up my rating from 3 to 4 stars. This place feels a bit like a time capsule, and a well-hidden one. A pub like this would fare better on Michigan Avenue, but on Outer Drive is just as well -- it's a neighborhood secret, and what a secret it is. This place opened in 1947, but it definitely feels like a 60s bar: dim red lighting, seedy stained glass, padded red leather. Someone else mentioned Don Draper, and that feels so accurate. The liquor selection may be a bit limited, but that doesn't stop the Elmhurst from having an excellent and creative cocktail menu. I had the Red Moon Over Manhattan, a unique Manhattan variation with Knob Creek Rye, red wine instead of sweet vermouth, simple syrup, and served over a large ice sphere. Downtown Dearborn lacks a proper cocktail bar, but the Elmhurst has a nice selection to pick from. Had a BLT tonight, and that hit the spot. Will be back for sure. read more

I love an old bar with character and this delivers! We came here after visiting greenfield village and were not disappointed at all. The well drinks were great, nothing beats a stiff whiskey and coke. For dinner we had a burger and a french dip. The burger was cooked to order and had great toppings. The french dip had great flavor and the au gus was tasty. The fries and chips were both good sides. The reason for 5 stars has to be the atmosphere. This place is a gem, seriously amazing. Went on a Monday evening...not even that late. Probably 6:30. Service was friendly but suuuuuper slow. I got the fish & chips. Mediocre at best. The fish was ok. Nothing to write home about. Small pieces left somethibg to be desired. Tartar sauce was too sweet. Made the mistake of getting curly fries. Also didn't help they were semi cold. Decor was neat but it was absolutely freezing in the front booth next yo the front wall. Needs insulation up there. Most likely won't go back any time soon. read more

Great local pub/tavern/bar in Dearborn that has been around since the 1940's. Very dark on the inside but beautiful stained glass all over the place and very cozy atmosphere. Loved the long bar with comfortable seating and metal/copper bar top. I got the tap house burger and it was excellent, I have not had a burger that good in a long time. I got a side of sweet potato fries and they were nice and crispy, excellent. Had some local beer on tap serviced ice cold that was excellent, an all around great experience. If you want a good burger go here, I will keep this place in mind when people come to visit. read more

We had a wonderful time at Elmhurst tonight! Small place so we had a bit of a wait for a table and then quite a wait for our food. But we were in no hurry so no problem. Cozy retro atmosphere with stained glass, comfy red padded booths and holiday lights. Dearborn's version of Redcoat Tavern :) Our waitress was great despite being totally swamped. I had the crab mushroom cap app to start. Presentation was kind of a glorious mess but it was absolutely delicious! We both had burgers which we enjoyed and sweet potato fries were yummy. In keeping with the old school vibe, craft beer here is a small selection of bottles. I had the BLT, and the bacon was generously stacked on the trimmings. Elmhurst will always have a special spot in my heart. It is the first establishment I had visited in Dearborn after my now husband first moved into the area. We were simply looking for a place to eat, and ended up finding Elmhurst, to which we still visit often many years later. In the fall, they serve mussels steamed in wine when you order, and every Thursday night is the Alaskan King Crab night for $21.99 - a full pound of meaty crab legs, fries, coleslaw and drawn butter. I also love their prime rib sandwiches. It's leftover prime ribs from the night before, but chances are good you can still get the doneness you want, but for half the price. The beer selection is great and they have a full top shelf bar, what more can a local ask for? read more

Also had the Shrimp Po Boy, the shrimp were quite big and there was so many on there!! And their homemade remoulade was perfect for the sandwich!! Stopped in today for lunch. I've been curious to try it since other Yelpers have mentioned the good food. I should clarify I've been to the Tap Room a few times but didn't eat there, just had a few beers. Since it was lunch, I ordered a soft drink. The menu shows $2.29, a bit pricey for pop, but not unusal. That is, until the waitress brings me a can of Diet Coke. Really? $2.29 for a 12 oz. can of pop? Even in a vending machine a can is around $1. I understand restaruants mark up products becuase they are serving it, but that was a bit too much for me. The service was great, the burger was really good, but in the end I paid $11.50 for a burger, fries, and a can of diet coke. This place is sort of a hidden gem. It is not a gourmet restaurant, nor do they have dozens of microbrews on tap. But it's an old-school, friendly neighborhood joint with good food and good service. It's like stepping into 1974 (or at least what I imagine 1974 was like). There are a few regulars, but the crowd on Friday and Saturday nights during the summer is very friendly. They have a broad selection of liquor, and usually at least a couple decent micros on tap (an IPA, a wheat, etc). But the food!!! Who knew?!? Again, not gourmet like a few bars on Michigan Ave are, but you're not paying those prices either... Solid Reuben, good French dip, decent French onion soup (can't say 'the best', but good). The menu is extensive and neither I or anyone I've been there with has a had a bad dish. There are booths if your primary goal is eating. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the two most DELICIOUS items on the menu: STUFFED MUSHROOMS: Huge Crab Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms, that come with a cream sauce & chopped bacon on top. It's kind of rich, because of the cream sauce, so you may want to share with someone. They are AMAZING!! STEW: with 3 choices of seafood: Shrimp (my favorite one) Scallops Clams They make it right at the bar in one of the 3 Oyster Cookers, so if you are sitting at the bar in front of them, you get to watch them make it. Elmhurst is a hidden gem in Dearborn. Yes, a bit dark and very red inside, but that's part of the charm--it's got the atmosphere without being forced, it's real. Unlike a certain bar across the street, when you walk in, it's not like you walked in on someone's basement party. Great food and drinks, make that very good drinks! The gals know how to sling'em, they sure don't keep you thirsty, and are all friendly. In my opinion, the burgers are better than Miller's and the pizza is pretty good too. It's a place you can walk into not knowing anyone and leave knowing almost everyone. My friends had the sausage sandwhich and the king crab sandwich.
